Purpose: To evaluate whether readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (RS-EPI) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can reduce image distortion and improve the lesion identification in parathyroid adenomas (PTAs) compared to single-shot EPI (SS-EPI) DWI, and to determine whether PTAs can be differentiated from other soft tissue structures of the head and neck region by using the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the preoperative MR images including DWI of 24 patients with surgically confirmed PTA. RS-EPI and SS-EPI DWI were evaluated by two independent readers for the identification of the lesions and distortion. The ADC values of the PTAs were compared with those of thyroid glands and cervical lymph nodes.Results: RS-EPI provided significantly less distortion compared to SS-EPI. RS-EPI tended to have better lesion identification compared with SS-EPI without a statistically significant difference. On SS-EPI, the PTAs had significantly higher ADC values compared with the cervical lymph nodes. On RS-EPI, the PTAs had significantly higher ADC values compared with the thyroid glands and cervical lymph nodes.Conclusion: RS-EPI reduces the DWI distortion in PTAs. The ADC value obtained using RS-EPI enables the differentiation of PTAs from nearby structures, such as thyroid glands and cervical lymph nodes.

Neuroinflammation induced by activated microglia is a key feature of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. The natural flavonoid 3′,4′,7-trihydroxyflavone protects nerve cells from oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis and inhibits the aggregation of amyloid β protein in vitro. However, little is known about its effects on microglial activation. In this study, we investigated the effects of 3′,4′,7-trihydroxyflavone on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- or interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-induced neuroinflammatory responses in MG6 microglial cells. 3′,4′,7-Trihydroxyflavone inhibited LPS- or IFN-γ-mediated nitric oxide (NO) generation and the upregulation of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) in MG6 cells. 3′,4′,7-Trihydroxyflavone also suppressed LPS- or IFN-γ-mediated phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1), which is crucial for iNOS expression. LPS stimulation induced rapid phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in MG6 cells. 3′,4′,7-Trihydroxyflavone significantly inhibited the LPS-mediated phosphorylation of JNK, but not that of ERK and p38 MAPK. The inhibitory effect of 3′,4′,7-trihydroxyflavone on NO generation was mimicked by pharmacological inhibition of the JNK signaling pathway with SP600125. Furthermore, SP600125 significantly inhibited LPS- or IFN-γ-mediated phosphorylation of STAT1 in MG6 cells. These results suggest that 3′,4′,7-trihydroxyflavone exerts anti-neuroinflammatory effects via inhibition of the JNK-STAT1 pathway in microglia.

Proteinuria is one of the most frequently reported adverse events leading to the discontinuation of lenvatinib treatment in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there are no reports regarding the risk factors of proteinuria in patients with HCC or patients receiving lenvatinib. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with HCC receiving lenvatinib at the Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital between April 2018 and December 2020. The severity of proteinuria was graded based on the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 5.0. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model was employed to identify the risk factors of developing grade ≥2 proteinuria. Among the 37 patients included, 3 patients had grade-1 proteinuria at baseline and 10 patients had estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 at baseline. Grades 1, 2, and 3 proteinuria were observed in 15 (40.5%), 10 (27.0%), and 2 (5.4%) patients, respectively, during lenvatinib treatment. The median value of eGFR was significantly lower in patients who developed grade ≥2 proteinuria than those with grade ≤1 proteinuria (59.6 vs. 78.1 mL/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.045). Multivariate analysis revealed that pre-existing proteinuria at baseline (hazard ratio (HR), 9.72; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.29–52.21; p = 0.030), and eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 at baseline (HR, 4.49; 95% CI, 1.32–16.07; p = 0.017) were significantly associated with developing grade ≥2 proteinuria. These patients should be monitored carefully, and our preliminary data should be confirmed by further studies.

RF electromagnetic wave exposure during MRI scans induces heat and occasionally causes burn injuries to patients. Among all the types of physical injuries that have occurred during MRI examinations, RF burn injuries are the most common ones. The number of RF burn injuries increases as the static magnetic field of MRI systems increases because higher RFs lead to higher heating. The commonly believed mechanisms of RF burn injuries are the formation of a conductive loop by the patient’s posture or cables, such as an electrocardiogram lead; however, the mechanisms of RF burn injuries that occur at the contact points, such as the bore wall and the elbow, remain unclear. A comprehensive understanding of RF heating is needed to address effective countermeasures against all RF burn injuries for safe MRI examinations. In this review, we summarize the occurrence of RF burn injury cases by categorizing RF burn injuries reported worldwide in recent decades. Safety standards and regulations governing RF heating that occurs during MRI examinations are presented, along with their theoretical and physiological backgrounds. The experimental assessment techniques for RF heating are then reviewed, and the development of numerical simulation techniques is explained. In addition, a comprehensive theoretical interpretation of RF burn injuries is presented. By including the results of recent experimental and numerical simulation studies on RF heating, this review describes the progress achieved in understanding RF heating from the standpoint of MRI burn injury prevention.

ヒッタイト王国は前2千年紀のアナトリア中央を中心に栄えた王国である。前13世紀のヒッタイト王ハットゥシリ3世が作成した『ハットゥシリ3世の弁明』という文書には、王と王妃プドゥヘパの「愛」について述べられる箇所がある。本稿では、この文書において王と王妃の愛が語られる理由を、ヒッタイト語で「愛」と訳される語の用例から考察する。愛にかんする語の用例には、男女の関係としての「愛」と支配者の関係としての「愛」がある。このことを踏まえると、ハットゥシリとプドゥヘパの「愛のある関係」とは、イシュタル神の力で異性として惹かれ合い、夫婦として調和のとれた様子を意味したと理解される。加えて、政治的文脈で使用される用例からは、支配者たちが契約関係を結ぶための法的根拠となる術語であったこともわかる。したがって、『ハットゥシリ3世の弁明』にみられる「愛」とは、愛情をもった夫婦であることを示すと同時に、ハットゥシリ3世が政治的なパートナーとしてプドゥヘパの高い地位を法的に認めるために言及したものと考えられる。The Hittite text known as the Apology of Ḫattušili III (CTH 81) mentions "love" between the king Ḫattušili III and his queen Puduḫepa. This paper reveals the reason their "love" was narrated in the text from an analysis of the usage of Hittite words that indicate "love." Their love, which was granted by the goddess Ištar/Šauška, shows how they were attracted to each other, and in harmony, became husband and wife. In the political context, love between rulers was cited as legal act, therefore in Ḫattušili III and Puduḫepa case, it justifies the couple's binding in a political partnership. Thus, with the inclusion of episodes describing their love, Ḫattušili III might had intended to show the legal recognition of Puduḫepa's high status in the Hittite royal family being almost equal to that of her husband as well as to show that their affection was indeed granted by Ištar.

[Purpose] This study aimed to investigate the movement of the thorax, lumbar spine, and pelvis when healthy participants sit on a chair, and to identify the kinematic characteristics due to changes in the height of the seat. [Participants and Methods] Twenty healthy participants (14 males, 6 females; mean age, 29 ± 5 years) were recruited for this study. They performed stand-to-sit motion using one seat with a height of 100% that of the lower leg length (standard) and another with a height of 60% that of the lower leg length (lower). A three-dimensional motion analysis system and four force plates were used to analyze each joint angle. [Results] The mean lumbar spine flexion angle was significantly increased in the lower versus the standard seat. As a kinematic characteristic, the pelvis tilted posteriorly while the thorax tilted anteriorly, which increased the lumbar spine flexion angle. The pelvis was tilted posteriorly when the hip joint flexed about 60° regardless of the seat height. [Conclusion] The lumbar spine flexion angle increased in the lower seat stand-to-sit motion, which suggested an increase in the load on the lumbar spine. The lumbar spine flexion angle was influenced by the characteristic movements of the thorax and pelvis.

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) are standard treatments for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and particularly for unresectable tumors or liver metastases in humans. However, reports on TACE used in veterinary medicine are few. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE). We performed DEB-TACE in four clinically normal dogs and pharmacokinetically compared the results against hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) of cisplatin in two dogs. Drug-eluting beads (DEB) loaded with cisplatin were injected through a microcatheter for selective embolization of the left hepatic artery. After embolization, computed tomography (CT) images and histological examination findings were obtained during a 4-week observation period. Serum platinum concentrations were measured to evaluate cisplatin after each procedure. Biochemical analysis was performed during a 12-week observation period. Embolization was successful in all dogs, and there were no clinically apparent abnormalities. Embolization was confirmed up to 4 weeks after DEB-TACE in two of the four dogs and up to 1 week in the other two dogs using postoperative CT images. Cisplatin was not detected in peripheral veins in all dogs after DEB-TACE, but it was detected in trace amounts after HAI. DEB-TACE using cisplatin was safe and well tolerated by normal dogs. DEB-TACE may be useful in terms of determining systemic toxicity and drug concentration within tumors.

Background:Although bystanders’ performance is important to improve outcomes of patients after cardiac arrests, few studies have investigated the barriers of bystanders, including those who could not perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation or any other rescue actions in emergency situations. This study aimed to assess the relationship between the psychological barriers of laypersons who encountered emergency situations and their rescue actions.Methods and Results:A questionnaire survey was conducted and this included laypersons who had encountered emergency situations during the last 5 years. Six questions were about the psychological barriers and 8 questions were about the laypersons’ rescue actions. The primary outcome was any rescue actions performed by laypersons in an actual emergency situation. Overall, 7,827 (92.8%) of 8,430 laypersons responded; of them, 1,361 (16.1%) had encountered emergency situations during the last 5 years, and 1,220 (14.5%) were eligible for inclusion in the analyses. Of the 6 psychological barriers, “fear of approaching a collapsed person” (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.50; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.32–0.79) and “difficulties in judging whether to perform any rescue action” (AOR 0.63; 95% CI 0.40–0.99) were significantly associated with performing any rescue actions.Conclusions:The fear of approaching a collapsed person and difficulties in judging whether to take any actions were identified as the psychological barriers in performing any rescue actions by laypersons who encountered emergency situations.

科学衛星や探査機では,コマンドの実行時刻やテレメトリデータの生成時刻を扱うための時刻系として,衛星時刻が使われる.衛星時刻は,オンボードのクロックを使って増加するカウンタであることが多い.衛星時刻はその衛星・探査機に固有の時刻系であり,かつ進み方も一定ではない.そのため,これを共通の時刻系に校正して使うことが行われる.我々は,宇宙航空研究開発機構 宇宙科学研究所で科学衛星・探査機の時刻校正に適用する枠組みを整備している.この枠組みは,今後打ち上げられる科学衛星・探査機で,衛星運用からデータ解析に至るまでの各地上系システム に共通機能として組み込まれる予定である.

<p>Potato (<i>Solanum tuberosum</i>) is one of the most important crops in the world. However, it is generally difficult to breed a new variety of potato crops because they are highly heterozygous tetraploid. Steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) such as α-solanine and α-chaconine found in potato are antinutritional specialized metabolites. Because of their toxicity following intake, controlling the SGA levels in potato varieties is critical in breeding programs. Recently, genome-editing technologies using artificial site-specific nucleases such as TALEN and CRISPR-Cas9 have been developed and used in plant sciences. In the present study, we developed a highly active Platinum TALEN expression vector construction system, and applied to reduce the SGA contents in potato. Using <i>Agrobacterium-</i>mediated transformation, we obtained three independent transgenic potatoes harboring the TALEN expression cassette targeting SSR2 gene, which encodes a key enzyme for SGA biosynthesis. Sequencing analysis of the target sequence indicated that all the transformants could be <i>SSR2</i>-knockout mutants. Reduced SGA phenotype in the mutants was confirmed by metabolic analysis using LC-MS. In vitro grown <i>SSR2</i>-knockout mutants exhibited no differences in morphological phenotype or yields when compared with control plants, indicating that the genome editing of SGA biosynthetic genes such as <i>SSR2</i> could be a suitable strategy for controlling the levels of toxic metabolites in potato. Our simple and powerful plant genome-editing system, developed in the present study, provides an important step for future study in plant science.</p>

Our previous studies identified that nimesulide analogs which bear a methoxy substituent at the para-position of the phenyl ring could be potential radiotracer candidates for detecting disorders related to cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression and activity in vivo using positron emission tomography (PET) in the brain. The present study was conducted to evaluate the in vivo characteristics of 11C-labeled para-methoxy nimesulide ([11C]1d) as a brain COX-2-targeted imaging agent compared to other isomeric methoxy analogs of nimesulide ([11C]1b and [11C]1c). [11C]1b–d were synthesized with reasonable yield and purity by the methylation of the O-desmethyl precursor with [11C]methyl triflate in the presence of NaOH at room temperature. We performed in vivo biodistribution analysis, brain PET imaging, ex vivo autoradiography, and metabolite analysis in mice. The uptake of [11C]1b–d was lower in the brain than in other tissues, including in the blood, and both [11C]1c and [11C]1d were rapidly metabolized. However, [11C]1d showed a small, but significant, specific signal and heterogeneous distribution in the brain. In vivo evaluation suggested that [11C]1d might correlate with COX-2 expression in the brain. Given its instability in vivo, [11C]1d seems unsuitable as a brain-COX-2 radioimaging agent. Further structural refinement of these radiotracers is necessary to enhance their uptake in the brain and to achieve sufficient metabolic stability.

Sesoko Station, Okinawa, has been the site of many significant advances in coral reproductive research and it continues to be a preferred destination for both Japanese and international researchers. Consequently, there are decades of spawning observations, which we present and explore here with the aim of making it easier to predict when species spawn at Sesoko Station. The data include over 700 spawning observations from 87 species of reef-building hermatypic corals. Almost all spawning occurred between dusk and dawn, with most spawning activity concentrated in the 2 to 4 hours after sunset. Some phylogenetic patterns were evident: most Acropora species spawn on or around the 6th full moon after December 21st (the northern hemisphere winter solstice); spawning in common species of merulinids and Porites appears to be concentrated around the 7th full moon and spawning in the fungiids around the 8th and subsequent full moons. The night of peak spawning with respect to the night of the full moon varied considerably among years in common Acropora species, but was dependent on the calendar date of the full moon in May or June. Therefore, despite an extended spawning season of over three months and considerable variation in the calendar date of spawning in many species among years, the month and night of spawning are reasonably predictable for many species enhancing the value of Sesoko Station as a site for coral reproductive research.

In modern optical communications, pulse amplitude modulation 4 (PAM4) is employed to achieve higher data rates than that achieved by conventional non-return-to-zero format. Meanwhile, there is an increasing interest to convert wired connections to wireless in data centers using high-speed millimeter-wave and terahertz (THz) links. Here, we introduced the PAM4 modulation for THz wireless communications using a resonant tunneling diode (RTD) receiver. Compared with a Schottky-barrier diode receiver, the RTD receiver has higher sensitivity, and a stronger nonlinearity at low input power when it is operated with an amplified detection scheme. We achieved 24-Gbaud (48-Gbit/s) transmission in the 300-GHz band with a quasi-real-time digital signal processing (DSP), which is the fastest PAM4 wireless communication without an offline DSP to the best of our knowledge.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to clarify the causal effect of toe-grasping exercises on the improvement of static or dynamic balance ability in home-based rehabilitation users. Method: Our study included 34 subjects who met the criteria and were evaluable out of 98 rehabilitation service users at home nursing stations. This study was a randomized controlled trial. The intervention group performed towel gathering exercises in addition to the regular home-based rehabilitation program. The primary outcome was one-leg standing time, and the secondary outcomes were two-step test and toe grip strength. Results: Seventeen subjects were assigned to the intervention group and seventeen to the control group by block randomization. Data from 15 and 12 subjects in the intervention group and control group, respectively, who were able to complete the initial evaluation and the evaluation after 3 months, were analyzed. We compared the amount of change after 3 months of evaluation in the intervention group with the change in the control group. The results showed that the left/right mean value of oneleg standing time in the intervention group was significantly greater than that in the control group. In terms of the amount of change in the intervention period (T2-T1) within each assessment, there were significant improvements in both the toe-grip strength and the two-step values in the intervention group. Conclusion: We found that toe-grasping exercises could improve the balance ability of home-based rehabilitation users. This suggests the clinical significance of toe function in rehabilitation programs.
