We introduce a novel rainfall estimation algorithm with a random-forest machine-learning method only from Infrared (IR) observations. As training data, we use nine-band brightness temperature (BT) observations obtained from IR radiometers on the third-generation geostationary meteorological satellite (GEO) Himawari-8 and precipitation radar observations from the Global Precipitation Measurement core observatory. The Himawari-8 Rainfall estimation Algorithm (HRA) enables us to estimate rain rate with high spatial and temporal resolution (i.e., 0.04° every 10 min), covering the entire Himawari-8 observation area (i.e., 85°E–155°W, 60°S–60°N) based solely on satellite observations. We conducted a case analysis of the Kanto–Tohoku heavy rainfall event to compare rainfall estimation results of HRA and the near-real-time version of the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP_NRT), which combines global rainfall estimation products with microwave and IR BT observations obtained from satellites. In this case, HRA could estimate heavy rainfall from warm-type precipitating clouds, although GSMaP_NRT could not estimate heavy rainfall when the microwave satellites were unavailable. Further, a statistical analysis showed that the warm-type heavy rain seen in the Asian monsoon region occurred frequently when the BT differences between the 6.9-μm and 7.3-μm of water vapor (WV) bands (ΔT6.9–7.3) were small. Himawari-8 is the first GEO to include the 6.9-μm band which is sensitive to middle-to-upper tropospheric WV. An analysis for the weighting functions of the WV multibands revealed that ΔT6.9–7.3 became small as WV amount in the middle-to-upper troposphere was small and there were optically thick cloud with the cloud top near the middle troposphere. Statistical analyses during boreal summer (August and September 2015 and July 2016) and boreal winter (December 2015 and January and February 2016) indicate that HRA has higher estimation accuracy for heavy rain from warm-type precipitating clouds than a conventional rain estimation method based on only one IR band.

Storage experiments on garlic (Allium sativum L.) bulbs were conducted to elucidate the causes and prevention of green discoloration (greening) of garlic puree, a severe problem in garlic processing. Greening of the pureed bulbs increased with the accumulation of S-(E-1-propenyl)-L-cysteinesulfoxide (isoalliin), which is metabolized from N-(γ-glutamyl)-S-(E-1-propenyl)-L-cysteine (Glu-PEC) during cold storage (3°C). Greening was reduced by warm storage (> 25°C) of the cold pre-stored bulbs, with an accompanying decrease in isoalliin. Accumulated isoalliin in the garlic bulbs during cold storage was converted to 5-methyl thiomorpholine-3-carboxylic acid sulfoxide (cycloalliin) with warm storage (> 25°C). The relationship between warm storage conditions (temperature, duration) and decreases in isoalliin content were presumed to be applicable to a first order-Arrhenius equation. Two-week storage of the ingredient garlic bulbs at 40°C, after cold pre-storage at 3°C for 12 weeks, sufficiently reduced greening of the processed puree to maintain the commercial quality of the bulbs.

熊本市中心市街地へ通勤する人々が「もっと楽しく!もっと元気に!もっと健康に!」朝を過ごせるような通勤方法「通勤班」を提言する。小学校時代に誰もが経験した集団登校のように、勤務先が同一または近い者同士が集まり、コミュニケーションを図りながら一緒に通勤することで、気軽に楽しく運動ができ、朝から元気になれるのではないだろうか。そこで、熊本市役所周辺を目的地として通勤する「通勤班」を提言する。

This study considered the movements of the defense lines and the ball during a football game as a three-coupled oscillation. Each defense line of two opposing teams oscillated with in-phase synchronization, and the length between each defense line and the ball oscillated with anti-phase synchronization. We introduced a three-coupled oscillation model to understand these synchronizations. First, we considered the case in which three masses, m, and four spring constants, k, were equal in a three-coupled oscillation. We calculated the eigenvectors and eigenvalues based on the equation of motion, and we obtained three modes of oscillation as three angular frequencies in the equation. We obtained key parameters when we defined the initial state of the system, which allowed us to solve the equation of motion for three-coupled oscillation. Next, we considered cases in which three masses and four spring constants differed. To confirm the validity of the three-coupled oscillation model, we calculated the distribution of the relative phase between two outer masses, m1 and m3, as defense lines and the length between two outer masses and the middle mass, m2, as each defense line and the ball. The three-coupled oscillations showed similar distributions of the relative phase. However, the periodogram showed distinct periodicity. Thus, a more sophisticated model is needed to understand the behavior of the defense lines and the ball during football games.

In order to elucidate the interaction of lactic acid bacteria with the immune system, immune responses to the lactic acid bacteria, Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus, were examined in mice fed with each organism. In mice fed with B. longum for more than 8 weeks, an antibody response was detected to the cytoplasm of B. longum, but not to the cell wall. On the other hand, in mice fed with L. acidophilus for more than 6 weeks, an antibody response was detected to both the cytoplasm and cell wall of L. acidophilus. Moreover, feeding each organism for 2 weeks enhanced the proliferative response of Peyer's patch (PP) cells to the cell fraction against which the serum antibody was detected. However, this was not found with spleen cells. These results suggest that mucosal stimulation by lactic acid bacteria may induce a systemic immune response to them.

The chiral and racemic oxovanadium(IV)salmmencomplexes, [VO(X)-(C16-salmmen)] (X =R(1),S(2), and rac(3); C16-salmmen = N,N'-monomethylenebis(5-hexadecyloxysalicylideneimine))containing 5-substituted alkoxy chains on aromaticrings were synthesized, and their mesomorphicbehaviorsand ferroelectric properties were alsoinvestigated. All complexes exhibited bothsmectic Aand chiral smectic C mesophasesabove 360 K, andtheyshowed ferroelectric properties in the chiral smectic Cmesophase.

この研究では,大学生185名を対象に質問紙を用いて調査を行い,教師からのほめられ経験と叱られ経験がその後の自己効力感に与える影響について検討を行った。調査では,小学校から現在までの教師からのほめられ経験と叱られ経験,自己効力感を測定した。ほめられ経験の因子分析では,『努力に対するほめられ経験』『能力に対するほめられ経験』の2つが抽出された。叱られ経験の因子分析では,『受動型叱られ経験』『思考型叱られ経験』『脅威型叱られ経験』の3つが抽出された。ほめられ経験,叱られ経験の各下位尺度得点を用いて高群低群を設け, その群要因の自己効力感に対する効果を1要因の分散分析を用いて検討した。これにより,次の結果が得られた。①『努力に対するほめられ経験』『能力に対するほめられ経験』が多いとその後の自己効力感が高まること。②『受動型叱られ経験』が多いとその後の自己効力感は低くなること。③『思考型叱られ経験』『脅威型叱られ経験』はその後の自己効力感には影響しないこと。

Objective: To assess mechanisms underlying aneurysm formation using a simple electronic circuit model.Materials and Methods: We created a simple circuit model connecting the celiac artery (CA) to the superior mesenteric artery via the pancreaticoduodenal arcade. We retrospectively reviewed 12 patients with true pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysms (PDAAs) who received open or endovascular treatment between 2004 and 2017. We set the resistance of each artery and organ voltage and calculated flow volume and rate in response to degrees of simulated CA stenosis from 0% to 99.9%.Results: Flow volume rates of the anterior pancreaticoduodenal artery and posterior pancreaticoduodenal artery decreased to zero when CA stenosis increased from 0% to 50% and then increased drastically, at which point flow direction reverted and the flow was up to three times the initial rate. The gastroduodenal artery (GDA) also showed reversed flow with severe CA stenosis. In 12 patients with PDAA, eight presented with a CA lesion, and the other patients presented with comorbidities causing the arteries to be pathologically fragile, such as Marfan syndrome, Behçet’s disease, and segmental arterial mediolysis. All four GDA aneurysms were not accompanied by CA lesions.Conclusion: The mechanism underlying CA-lesion-associated PDAA formation may be partially explained using our model.

We report near-infrared imaging observations of the β Pic dust disk, from which we infer the orbital architecture of planetesimal belts that remain near mean motion resonances (MMRs) with a planet at 62 AU. Our results reveal that one of the previously identified planetesimal belts lies in the 2/3 MMR with the planet, similar to the resonant relation between Plutinos and Neptune. We suggest that all the previously reported planetesimal belts are located near the 2/3 MMRs of four planets whose spatial arrangements make a similar figure of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. This implies that the Solar System is a prototype of planetary systems around main-sequence stars in terms of planets' configuration, as expected from planet formation theories.

[Purpose] To clarify the relationship between movement of the shank relative to the global reference frame (shank angle) while running, and foot alignment factors that lead to the onset of Achilles peritendinitis. [Participants and Methods] This study included 54 healthy male participants. Running at a constant speed was measured by three-dimensional motion analysis. The shank angle at the time of the first peak of vertical ground reaction force and maximum ankle dorsiflexion were analyzed. The magnitude of ankle plantarflexion, inversion, and adduction angle in the propulsive phase as well as static foot alignment (navicular index, and range of ankle dorsiflexion angle) were measured. The relationships between shank angle features and these parameters were investigated. [Results] Outward inclination of the shank occurred at the time of the first peak of vertical ground reaction force and maximum ankle dorsiflexion, with this increase in movement correlating with parameters that increased the risk of Achilles peritendinitis. [Conclusion] These findings suggest that evaluation of the shank angle on the frontal plane while running may be used to estimate the onset of Achilles peritendinitis in clinical practice.

The fundamental reason of deterioration is the repetitional scaling of the surface layer; further, it has been basically analyzed that the freezing and thawing actions make concrete neutralize from the outside by virtue of the environmental contact water. The wet-dry action is one of the principal deterioration causes. It has been already understood that both actions contribute to the neutralizing acceleration of concrete. The present paper particularly deals with the quantification of the concentration dilution of pore solution and the neutralization of the matrix of concrete, from the viewpoint of the potential Hydrogen (pH) range of general environmental water; in addition, it has been clarified that the equilibration-concentration and the neutralized depth can be obtained, assuming to be the semipermeable membrane on the shell interface. The critical thickness as to the hypothetical thick shell with the through microcrack has been derived for the first time; thus, finally the mechanical cover can be perfectly neutralized due to the approximately fifty cycles of water-microcirculation.

東京都荒川区の社会福祉法人上宮会所蔵聖徳太子像は、像内銘により、文永七年(一二七〇)に仏師尭慶が製作したことの知られる鎌倉時代後期の規準作品である。本稿では、二〇一三年五月に大学院思想文化専攻開講科目「美術史学演習Ⅲ」における演習の一環で実施した調査の概要を、「伝来」「像の概要」「銘記および納入品」の三章に分けて報告し、さらに日本彫刻史上の意義や周辺の問題についても、「聖徳太子造像における位置」「形式と表現」「仏師尭慶について」の三章に分けて論述する。この像は、聖徳太子像の典型的形式のひとつである孝養太子像の初期作例として貴重である。銘記によれば不退寺(現在も奈良市に所在する不退寺にあたる可能性がつよい)の像として造られたもので、さらに十六歳の肖像であると明記し、その形式の原型となった像の存在が暗示されることも注目される。また、形式や表現の点で奈良・元興寺の善春作聖徳太子像と共通する点が多く、作者尭慶はその他の事績をふくめても、鎌倉中・後期の奈良で活躍した善派仏師と関係が深いこと、などが明らかになった。末尾には、近代以降のこの像の伝来に関する文献を関連史料として付載した。 The statue of Shotoku Taishi owned by the Jyogu Hospital Social Welfare Group (Jyogu Kai), Arakawa-ku, Tokyo is a standard work in the late Kamakura Period, known to be created by Busshi (sculptor of Buddhist statues) Gyokei in 1270 from the inscription in the statue. This paper reports an outline of an investigation conducted as a part of a seminar in "Art History Seminar III", a course offered by the Department of Cultural History, Graduate School in May, 2013, in three chapters; "History", "Outline of the Statue", and "Inscription and Items inside the Statue" and discusses its meaning in Japanese sculpture history and peripheral issues in three chapters; "Position in Creation of Shotoku Taishi Statues", "Style and Expression", and "Busshi Gyokei". This statue is valuable as an example of the early stage of statues of Kyoyo Taishi (considered to be a style of praying, being concerned about the condition of his father), which is one of typical styles of statues of Shotoku Taishi. According to the inscription, this statue was made for Futai-ji temple (this temple is likely to be Futai-ji still located in Nara city) and is clearly described as an image at 16 years old, and the suggestion of presence of a statue used as a model of the style attracts attention. The statue has many points in common regarding style and expression with the statue of Shotoku Taishi made by Zenshun in Gango-ji temple in Nara, and it was found out that Gyokei had a close relationship with the Zen-pa School Busshi who were active in Nara in the middle to late Kamakura period also in terms of other achievements. Materials relating to the history of this statue in the modern period and after are attached to the end of the paper.

Background:We investigated the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with duration of metabolic syndrome (MetS) for the past 4 years before the CVD event.Methods and Results:We performed a nested case-control study within the Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study. A total of 139 registered cases of CVD and 561 self-reported cases of CVD were identified and matched individually on age, sex, and worksite with 695 and 2,803 controls, respectively. MetS was defined by the Joint Interim Statement definition. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for registered CVD was 4.7 (2.9, 7.5) for people with persistent MetS (positive for MetS for ≥3 assessments) and 1.9 (1.1, 3.3) for those with intermittent MetS (positive for MetS for 1–2 assessments), compared with people without MetS during the past 4 years before the event/index date (P for trend <0.001). The corresponding odds ratio for self-reported CVD was 2.7 (2.2, 3.5) and 1.8 (1.4, 2.3) (P for trend <0.001). The association with MetS duration was stronger for myocardial infarction than for other CVD subtypes. Similar results were obtained when using the Japanese MetS criteria.Conclusions:The risk of CVD increases with increasing MetS duration. These findings contribute to risk stratification and encourage lifestyle modification for people with MetS to minimize their health risk.

In this study, we cultivated 32 major citrus cultivars and local accessions of Kagoshima and one control accession to elucidate the polymethoxylated flavone contents with the purpose of providing information for citrus consumers to promote citrus production in the region. All trees were grafted on trifoliate orange rootstock and cultivated in Kagoshima City, Japan. In general, the Brix values and fruit weights of the major cultivars were higher and heavier than those of the local accessions. The ascorbic acid content of Tankan and Rokugatsu Mikan was high and that of Shiikuwasha, Kabuchii, and Shiikuu was very low. For analysis of polymethoxylated flavones (PMF), important health-promoting components sinensetin, nobiletin, heptamethoxyflavone, and tangeretin were quantified. Cultivar and accession differences in the PMF content were also observed. Nobiletin and tangeretin were found to be major PMF in most accessions, and heptamethoxyflavone was not detected in some species such as Kishu Mikan, Ponkan, Shiikuwasha, and Kuroshima Mikan. In the major cultivars, the PMF contents of Kishu Mikan, Ponkan, and Tankan were found to be high. In the local citrus accessions, Shiikuwasha, its relative, and Kishu Mikan were found to have the highest PMF content, and those of Kabuchii and Kuroshima Mikan were also high. Major cultivars Satsuma mandarin, pummelo, and its relative and the local accession Kunenbo contained little PMF.

We are planning to explore the caverns through the skylight holes on the Moon and Mars. The holes and their associated subsurface caverns are among the most important future exploration targets. The importance of the lunar and Martian holes and their associated caverns is categorized from two aspects: (1) fresh materials are easily observed and sampled there, and (2) the subsurface caverns provide a safe, quiet environment. The expectation of lunar and Martian hole and cavern exploration is increasing in Japan. We name the project as UZUME (Unprecedented Zipangu (Japan) Underworld of the Moon Exploration) whose name is after a Japanese mythology. The ultimate purpose of the UZUME project is to investigate how to expand human activity and survival in space and on extraterrestrial bodies.
