A new species of flabelligerid polychaete, Lamispina miurai sp. nov., has been described based on material collected at a depth of 226–228 m in the Pacific Ocean, off Aomori, Japan. Lamispina miurai sp. nov. can be differentiated from other congeners by the following features: i) the body is not covered with sand or large sediment particles; ii) the lamispines are present on the chaetiger 4 and succeeding chaetigers; iii) the tip of the lamispine is curved and subdistally serrated; iv) the cephalic cage is formed by chaetigers 1–3; and v) the length of the cephalic cage is twice as long as the body width.

The process of formation by an artist of an art concept for the production of a new series of artwork has not yet been empirically elucidated. The goal of this study is to describe the process of art concept formation by a contemporary artist through metrical analyses of a text corpus based on interviews with the artist. From an analysis of the frequency of occurrence of items of vocabulary in the interview data and the TF-IDF (term frequency-inverse document frequency), we find that the second of three phases in the artist’s creative process was the most critical for the formation of the art concept,as shown in our previous qualitative study. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the art concept, White Noise, was inspired by a motif generated by the artist, and its contents were continuously modified and developed over time. Further, based on an analysis of co-occurrence frequencies of words, the structure of the art concept was deduced from the importance of co-occurring vocabulary. By means of visualizing the network of co-occurrence analysis, it is clarified that the feature words Large Glass functioned in the first phase as an intermedium for dividing the structure of the concept into two parts. In the second phase, these two parts of the structure of the concept became integrated into one. In the last phase, the structure of the concept was elaborated with the revived feature words, White Noise and Duchamp.

This article focuses on the activities of the Research Groups (Kenkyu han) promoted by the National Research Council of Japan (NRCJ) during World War II. Research collaboration has recently attracted the attention of many scholars as a factor in the development of Japanese technology. In fact, there were a large number of research collaboration activities during the period, and the Research Groups were one of the largest of such groups. NRCJ, established in 1920 under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, had been mainly involved in the promotion of international academic collaboration until World War II. But when the Board of Technology (Gijutsuin) was established for the mobilization of science and technology and the tide of the Pacific War turned against Japan, the Ministry of Education enforced a reform so that NCRJ could launch widespread research collaboration throughout the country. The Research Groups were organized in 1944, and at its peak had 193 groups and a total of over 1,900 scientists. Typical research issues included electronics, scarce and rare materials, and public health. These were similar to those of the Research Neighborhood Groups (Kenkyu tonarigumi), which were promoted by the Board of Technology, resulting in some duplication of activities between the two groups and leading to inefficiency in the mobilization of science and technology research.

童謡は無名の子どもたちによって長い期間をかけて作られたものである。多くの子どもたちの関わったものだから,そこには大人の思いもよらない深い意味や謎が込められたものが少なくはない。そうした歌の中には,卑狸な意味や大人たちへのあてこすり,深淵な謎かけが込められたものもある。本稿では,子どもの遊びが必ずしも子どもらしい純真な内容をもっとは限らないという前提にたって,こうした謎の分析を試みた。その結果得られた結論は,次のようなものである。上野動物園のお猿の電車を歌った歌の歌詞はたわいないもののようだが,実は「イケナイ絵」についてのお絵かき歌だった。また,「タン,タン,タヌキの…」で始まる替え歌には「たぬきの金時計」という歌詞の別バージョンあったが,それはタヌキというあだ名をもった教員を椰楡したものであった。日本人なら知らない者のいない童謡「通りゃんせ」は,天神様に札を納めにいった母親が神社から帰ることができないという恐ろしい謎かけを含む問答歌であった。

Two specimens of Ophiopsila cf. polyacantha H. L. Clark, 1915 are described from approximately 15 m water depth at Kakeromajima island, Amami Islands in southwestern Japan. The species occurs on sandy bottoms with the disc buried and the arms extended above the substratum. Bioluminescence and burrowing behavior are described. The specimens are clearly morphologically different from the two species of Ophiopsila Forbes, 1843 previously recorded from Japan. The new Japanese name “Kin-habu-toranoo-kumohitode” is proposed.
