Japanese radish shredded and dried is an excellent preserved food ingredient. It fits to a variety of other ingredients e.g.deep-fried Tohu "ABURA-AGE", carrot, etc., especially by simmering. It can also be easily rehydrated and served without cooking. Even the water used to soak the dried radish is a good stock. Its nutrient composition is rich in fiber and minerals e.g. calcium and iron;low-fat and low-calories. The characteristic of Kiriboshi-Daikon has much more possibilities in today's diet. In this modern society with diverse foods issues, we are bound in duty for further utilization of such possibilities.

The contractile and metabolic properties of skeletal muscle depend on muscle fiber type composition. There are two major fiber types: type 1 fibers (slow-twitch oxidative) and type 2 fibers (fast-twitch glycolytic). Muscle fiber type is a critical physiological property that affects sports performance and metabolic ability. To date, natural food components have not been regarded as regulators of skeletal muscle fiber type. Meanwhile, in the present century, it has been revealed that several nuclear receptors (NRs) and their cofactors affect skeletal muscle fiber type independently from muscular contraction. Interestingly, many compounds from natural food sources have been identified as NR ligands. These facts indicate the possibility of the regulation of muscle fiber type by food components. In this review, we present an overview of the current knowledge of the role of NRs and their cofactors in skeletal muscle fiber type and discuss the perspective of muscle fiber type regulation by food components via NR.

A potable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer composed of an electric battery X-ray generator and a silicon drift detector was made. Several kinds of samples, including toxic elements, such as lead and cadmium, were measured in air using this spectrometer. A possibility to analyze these toxic elements is discussed. It has been demonstrated that sufficient intensity for lead and cadmium was obtainable within 100 seconds to identify these elements.

The present study was designed to examine whether the apparent brightness of the test field was affected by varying the inducing field luminance and area. Binocular matching method was used. The apparent brightness of the test field was measured by the method of adjustment. The test field was disc-shaped and, in Experiment I and II, was surrounded by a contiguous annular inducing field of different areas. Effects of inducing luminance and area upon the test brightness were studied in Experiment I. In Experiment II, the test brightness surrounded by the inducing field of equal luminance was measured. It was also examined whether the apparent brightness of a field could be changed by varying its area in Experiment III.
