Endogenous testosterone is known to be protective against metabolic syndrome (MetS) in men. While various markers of testosterone status including serum total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (measured using analogue ligand RIA [aFT]), calculated FT (cFT), calculated bioavailable T (cbT), and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) are recognized, it is unclear which of these markers are the most appropriate ones for the detection of MetS. We measured various testosterone values and metabolic markers in 249 healthy Japanese males (mean age 52.7 ± 7.4 yr) and analyzed which testosterone value is most associated with various metabolic parameters, including MetS as diagnosed according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF, 2009 version) or with the Japanese criteria. Age had no effect on the TT level but significantly decreased aFT, cFT, and cbT levels and significantly increased the SHBG level. All testosterone values and SHBG showed weak inverse relationships with the metabolic markers BMI, waist circumference, insulin, HOMA-R, and HOMA-β, with the strongest relationship being to TT. TT and SHBG were significantly lower in men with MetS than in men without MetS. All testosterone values gradually decreased as the number of MetS components increased. Multivariate analysis revealed that the TT median value of <4.0 ng/mL was the only significant marker for the detection of MetS. These results were essentially the same regardless of whether the diagnosis of MetS was based on the IDF or the Japanese criteria. In conclusion, among various testosterone values, TT is the most reliable indicator of MetS in middle-aged Japanese men.

Mechanical paradox planetary gears are suitable for power transmissions of current robots, such as space manipulators, which drive large-inertia loads, because the gears offer high reduction ratio, small size, light weight and high reliability. However, mechanical paradox planetary gears are subject to a drawback in that their efficiencies are lower than those of conventional planetary gears. The efficiencies of mechanical paradox planetary gears are hence theoretically analyzed and evaluated by defining the tooth number modification of a planet gear to deal with all the possible combinations of tooth numbers. The following results are obtained : the efficiencies are greatly influenced by the efficiencies of the planet and internal gear pairs ; the maximum efficiencies are minimally influenced by the reduction ratio, and they are obtained when the factors of the contact ratio of the gear pairs are approximately equal ; the maximum efficiency is approximately 78% if the tooth surface friction coefficients are 0.1.

スギ丸太の歩留まり向上と廃棄物低減を目指し、スギ樹皮を有効利用する方法として厚物成形ボードに転換する方法を検討した。さらに、このボードの持つ断熱性、成型性、耐久性、厚物化による載荷性などの性能を生かし、付加価値の高い利用法として床暖房基材とすることを考案し、これの基礎技術を確立する実験を行った。検討結果を以下のような四章にまとめた。1)スギ樹皮ボードの諸性質:スギ樹皮ボードの基礎的な性質を明らかにするために、小試験体により力学的性質、寸法安定性、断熱性、VOC吸着性及び遮音性能を測定した。樹皮ボードは力学的性能がやや劣るものの、優れた断熱性、VOC吸着性などを持つことが明らかになった。2)床暖房基材成型用金型の設計・試作及び実験用ボードの製造:既存の蒸気噴射プレス定盤に取り付けて用いる成形金型の設計を行った。金型の成形パターンは汎用性と施工性を考え正方格子状とした。この金型を用い、イソシアネート樹脂接着剤を用いて厚さ45mm、比重0.40の実験用ボードを1枚当たり4.5分で製造できた。3)床暖房モデルを用いた配管及び床構成の検討:先に試験製造したボードを用い、約1×2mの床暖房モデルを作製し、熱源を接続して配管パターン、配管直径、熱拡散材料の有無による暖房効果への影響を検討した。配管の差異による影響はほとんど見られなかったが、熱拡散材料、特に薄様の金属板の使用は暖房速度の向上及び暖房の均一化に効果的であった。4)実大試験住宅への床暖房の施工:最終的な施工方法の開発及び施工性の評価を目的として、実大の試験住宅内の一室に暖房床を施工した。この検討から、開発した方法が良好な施工性、高い自由度をもつことが明らかになった。

中世ヨーロッパから生じた「礼儀」という概念は宗教間の差別化を意味するものから生じ、時代の流れとともに変化して社会状況や人間関係を構築するために自意識を表現するものへと進展していった。日本でも「礼儀、行儀作法、マナー」は中世・近世・近代と歴史的に展開する過程において文明社会を確立するもののひとつとして在してきたのであるが、身分の差別化や普遍性を追求したのち、現代社会におけるマナーは形式だけのものとなり、対人関係におけるストラテジーと化してきたのである。現代人のマナーの捉え方を秘書検定試験から探求し、西洋との融合化について考察したものである。
