近年,脳科学の分野では、fMRI計測によって恐怖の交感神経活動に関する脳内ネットワークが明らかとなったと報告されている.しかし,日常的な状況下でのfMRI計測は困難である.日常的な状況下で脳波計を用いて簡易的かつリアルタイム性高く人の恐怖を検出できれば,客観的な恐怖の指標を用いてエンターテイメント分野での恐怖の制御,医療サービスなどでの恐怖の低減といった実応用が可能となる. 本稿では乾式の脳波計を用いて,VRホラーゲームを用いた実験とホラー映像を用いた実験の二つから,周波数解析を用いて恐怖時と非恐怖時の脳波データの特徴を周波数帯域毎に分析した.その結果,アルファ波の恐怖時と非恐怖時のパワースペクトル密度に有意な差が見られました.

化学反応を理解する上で,酸・塩基の概念は極めて重要である。ブレンステッドの定義によって,酸塩基反応をプロトンの授受として溶媒の役割と関連づけながら統一的に説明することができる。ここでは,ブレンステッドの定義に基づいて,酸・塩基の強さ,塩の加水分解,酸塩基指示薬や緩衝溶液について,高校化学で扱う内容を中心に解説する。また,拡張された酸塩基概念としてのルイスの定義にもふれる。

Development of high-performance permanent magnets relies on both the main-phase compound with superior intrinsic magnetic properties and the microstructure effect for the prevention of magnetization reversal. In this article, the microstructure effect is discussed by focusing on the interface between the main phase and an intergranular phase and on the intergranular phase itself. First, surfaces of main-phase grains are considered, where a general trend in the surface termination and its origin are discussed. Next, microstructure interfaces in SmFe12-based magnets are discussed, where magnetic decoupling between SmFe12 grains is found for the SmCu subphase. Finally, general insights into finite-temperature magnetism are discussed with emphasis on the feedback effect from magnetism-dependent phonons on magnetism, which is followed by explanations on atomic arrangements and magnetism of intergranular phases in Nd-Fe-B magnets. Both amorphous and candidate crystalline structures of Nd-Fe alloys are considered. The addition of Cu and Ga to Nd-Fe alloys is demonstrated to be effective in decreasing the Curie temperature of the intergranular phase.

The present study aims to elucidate waiting for a patient's reaction as a clinical skill of speech-language-hearing therapists (STs). Our analysis focused on the timing and methods employed by STs when they provide a verbal support to their aphasia patients who had difficulty in speaking. Video recordings of novice and experienced STs providing speech therapy to aphasia patients were documented. The results indicated that experienced STs organized a therapeutic sequence responding not only to patients' utterances, but to nonverbal behaviors such as facial expressions and gestures as well, and arranged a timing of handing a verbal support accordingly. In this study, we call this STs' practice a gradual hint-presentation sequence organization. The sequence consisted of STs' step-by-step processes towards their final hint presentation to the patients, through which STs became able to infer the situation of aphasia patients in a word finding difficulty. These processes are considered to be a procedure in which STs attempted to put off their hint presentation to the maximum extent possible. These results suggest that STs can elicit a word from aphasia patients through multimodal interaction with them. The establishment of multimodal interaction with patients appears to constitute one of important aspects in clinical skills STs should strive for.

近江の国は、太占より人々が住み、人間の活動の跡が多く遺跡として多く残されている。遺跡の多くは琵琶湖周辺に位置し、人々との関わりの歴史が文明と共に始まったことが伺える。近江には古くから異常気象や天変地異等に関する記録が残されている。湖周辺の多くの旧家に伝わる古文書等には洪水による災害の記録が多く記されている。本小文は、占文書や各地に残されている痕跡から歴史洪水の記録を調べると共に、明治以降については、気象状況被害の状況等について統計的に整理し、更には明治29年の大水害を、昭和58年の土地利用状況にあてはめ想定被害状況の比較考察を行った。

ポリヒドロキシアルカン酸 (Polyhydroxyalkanoate) は, 多くの微生物が菌体内に蓄積する熱可塑性高分子であり, かつ環境中の微生物により水と二酸化炭素にまで分解されることから環境調和型プラスチックとして種々の応用が期待されている。ポリヒドロキシアルカン酸の1種であるPHBHはR-3-ヒドロキシブタン酸 (3HB) とR-3-ヒドロキシヘキサン酸 (3HH) から成る共重合ポリエステルであり, 植物油や脂肪酸等を炭素源として微生物によって生産される。PHBHはその3HH組成比によって硬質から軟質の幅広い物性を示すため広範な用途が期待されることから, われわれは工業規模での生産研究および加工研究を行ってきた。

Aims: The evidence for the impact of alcohol consumption on long-term mortality among myocardial infarction (MI) survivors was limited. We aimed to examine whether alcohol consumption was associated with cause-specific and all-cause mortality in men with or without a history of MI. Methods: A total of 32,004 men aged 40-79 years with no history of MI and 1,137 male MI survivors, free of stroke and cancer, were followed through the end of 2009. Alcohol consumption was assessed using self-administered questionnaires at baseline and five years. Results: In MI survivors, consuming 23-45 g/day of alcohol was associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality compared to never drinkers: the multivariable hazard ratio was 0.36 (95% confidence interval: 0.16-0.80). In non-MI men, a 10-26% lower risk was observed at <23 or 23-45 g/day with the U-shaped association for CHD, cardiovascular disease, other causes, and all causes (P-quadratic <0.001). Conclusion: Alcohol consumption of 23-45 g/day was associated with a lower CHD mortality in MI survivors as so in men without MI.

The status of 37 species of breeding seabirds in Japan has been reported by Hasegawa (1984). However, since then, no report has been made. The author was involved in the launch of seabird monitoring for the Monitoring site 1000 project by the Ministry of the Environment in 2004. In the over 15 years since then, population and habitat have been surveyed in 30 major breeding areas, including 80 islands and islets in Japan. In this paper, the previous studies including reports based on this project and the seabird colony database were reviewed. The populations of many species at various islands declined, possibly because of introduced predators and human disturbance. The nesting habitats of most of the seabird breeding areas had deteriorated. Therefore, the continuous monitoring of the change of the population and nesting habitat and quick operation of appropriate conservation measures, (eradication of introduced predators and redacation of human disturbance) are required. In this paper, 1) distribution of seabirds, 2) monitoring seabird survey, 3) current status, 4) introduced predators, and 5) conservation activities are summarized. Further 1) necessity of long-term monitoring of seabirds, 2) extermination of introduced predators, 3) reduction of anthropogenic disturbances, and 4) issues of conservation measures are discussed.

本稿は、近世後期の土浦の薬種商色川家の記録を手掛かりに、地方の薬種商がどのような薬種を仕入れ活動したか、又、政治・社会状況が大きく揺れ動いていたこの時期に薬種商がどのように行動したのか等、その実態の一端を明らかにしたものである。 江戸時代は、日本の医学・医療が発達した時代である。日本で独自化した東洋医学「漢方医学」に複数の流派が誕生する一方、十八世紀半ば以降は「蘭方医学」も発達し、両医学が共存した。そして、都市のみならず、地方の農村部でも医学塾などで修行した医師が活動していた。医師が医療活動を行う為には薬種が必要であり、都市・農村共に薬種商がいたはずである。しかし、個々レベルの薬種商に関する具体的な研究は、史料的問題によりほとんどなく、その実態は不明なことが多い。 色川家は、土浦城下(現、茨城県土浦市)で十八世紀中頃から幕末期にかけて薬種商を営んだ家である。色川家九代目の三中は、地域の学者として有名であるが、家業の薬種商としても活躍し、その弟美年ともに家業を成長させていった。色川家には、多様かつ膨大な文書がある。三中・美年が書き綴った日記「家事志」「家事記」を始め、取り扱い薬種の帳面等から、当時の薬種商の実態についても窺える。本稿では、色川家が複数の江戸の薬種商から薬種を仕入れ、江戸の大店薬種商と同等の多様な漢方薬・蘭方薬などを扱っていたことを分析、明らかにした。 又、本稿では、天保改革期、幕末期の異国船来航時の二例から、時の政治・社会状況に大きく影響されてゆく薬種商の姿も示した。そこからは、天保改革時に藩による物価引下げ政策の中で薬種商達が薬種値段引下に対応してゆく面、異国船渡来の影響による薬種の不足と薬種高騰・下落の中で薬種確保に奔走する商人の姿が見られた。 近世後期から幕末期にかけての地域の薬種商は、医師の医療を支え医療の一端を担う重要な立場であるとともに、時の政治・社会状況に左右される商人という、両面を持ち合わせる存在だったのである。

「科学技術立国をめざしてきた日本の技術が,2005年を節目に凋落し始めている。大学進学率の上昇によって政府のサポートが十分にいきわたらなくなり,科学技術を推進する学と官とのスクラム体制も弱体化した」――東大総長,文部大臣,科学技術庁長官を務めた有馬氏は,今の日本の科学技術の水準の低下をこう憂える。そのための処方箋として同氏は,エネルギーや科学技術を進めていく司令塔を作ることと,科学技術推進のために予算措置を含めた高等教育の強化を訴える。また,原子力界に対しては未来を見据えた視点で将来を切り開いてほしいと述べた。
