Most current dictionaries say that “Kirin” is a correct Japanese translation of giraffe, which is an Arabic word meaning “fast walker.” Japanese and Chinese words usually use the same Chinese characters, but the Chinese word for giraffe is Changjinglu (長頸鹿) “long-necked deer”, whereas Kirin is a mythical animal that traditionally appeared in connection with the arrival of a saint.In the Ming dynasty, Kirin was used in the meaning of giraffe in China, some of which passages the writer found in 'The History of Ming (明史).'But as more people saw giraffes, they became more aware of the differences between Kirin and giraffe.In 1860, Gempo Mitsukuri tried translating the Latin name Camelopardalis (camel-panther) into 'Hyoda.'But in 1907 when the first giraffe was actually imported to Japan and called a Kirin by Dr. Chiyomatsu Ishikawa (first director of Ueno Zoo), “Kirin” became the official word in Japan.

In Makino Library (on the grounds of Kochi Prefecture's Makino Botanical Garden), the writer made a close examination of a first-edition copy of A Pocket Dictionary of the English and Japanese Language (sic) . The copy of that rare book is one of only seventeen still in existence, out of the two hundred copies printed in the Edo era in 1862. Dr. Tomitaro Makino, a worldfamous botanist, possessed a first edition of the Dictionary, and also had six copies of the Dictionary. Why did he have so many copies of the Dictionary and how did he use them in his study of botany?In the preface for the second edition of theDictionary, the composer HORIKOSI KAMENOSKAY (sic) said that the first edition contained a number of errors regarding the Japanese and Chinese names of Plants, Animals and Minerals that needed to be corrected and that he had done so with the kind assistance of his learned friends YANAGAWA SUNSAM (sic), TANAKA YOSIWO (sic) & others.When Dr. Makino was a young man, he visited Dr. Yoshio Tanaka, a noted naturalist, and Dr. Tanaka remained one of Dr. Makino's most important mentors throughout his life. No doubt Dr. Makino frequently consulted the second edition of the Dictionary to help him choose the exact equivalent in Japanese terms when he was writing An Illustrated Flora of Japan.This report is based on the paper read by the writer at the regular monthly meeting on November 2, 2002.

It is well known that the English word "philosophy" was translated into Japanese as<I>tetsugaku</I>by Amane Nishi.<BR>The writer makes clear the circumstances under which Nishi coined the term<I>tetsugaku</I>.<BR>However, before Nishi coined it, the word<I>rigaku</I>was the term most com-monly used to mean "philosophy." <BR>In 1791-92, in a translation of a Dutch book on astronomy, YoshinagaMotoki translated "philosophy" into various terms, such as 儒教・智学・窮理学・性理学・性理術. This was the first recorded translation of "philosophy" into these terms. And after twenty years, in a few Dutch-Japanese or English-Japanese dictionaries compiled around 1810, we can find the word<I>rigaku</I> (理学).A case can be made that Yoshinaga Motoki and Dutch interpreters played an important role in the translation of the word "philosophy" into Japanese. But why did<I>tetsugahu</I>come to replace<I>rigaku</I>as the commonly accepted translation when<I>rigaku</I>had been used for so many years.<BR>After presenting a report at the regular monthly meeting in April, 1993, the writer tried to throw new light on this question, as well as on the issues of why opinions are divided on the books in which the term<I>tetsugaku</I>appeared, and why "philosophy" was not translated into its exact Japanese equivalent<I>aichigaku</I> (愛智学).

低マグネシウム(Mg)血症は薬物療法において重大な障害になるが、その発症機序は大部分が不明であり、有効な治療法は全く開発されていない。Mg輸送体の分子実体が未解明であったことが、Mg代謝疾患と創薬研究の遅延を招いたと考えられる。申請者は低Mg血症におけるMgチャネルの発現異常機構を検討し、薬剤性および遺伝性低Mg血症の発症機序を分子レベルで解明した。さらに、低Mg血症の治療につながる化合物の同定に成功した。本研究により、低Mg血症の回避に向けた薬剤の開発基盤が構築された。

The experiment to grasp the indoor thermal environment when air supplied from air supply opening was carried out. The difference of the indoor thermal environment by height of air supply opening was compared. The air temperature distribution, the velocity of the wind distribution, CDP, and EHT were used as evaluation indexes. The fluctuation between upper and lower temperature in front of the air supply opening was decreased by raising the height of the installation.

The main theme of this paper is to make clear when and how the names of shichiyo were translated from European languages into Japanese.The writer examined representative Dutch-Japanese dictionaries compiled in the Edo era and important English-Japanese or Japanese-English dictionaries published in the late years of Edo era and in the early years of the Meiji era.In the oldest, extant English-Japanese dictionary ‘_??__??__??__??__??__??__??__??_’ (1811) by Shôei Motoki, we can find the names of shichiyo in the same forms as in the present use. But about 20 years before, Shôei's father Yoshinaga Motoki made an astroromical translation from Dutch, and in his book (1791-1792), we can find shichiyo such as_??__??__??_, _??__??__??_, _??__??__??_, _??__??__??_, _??__??__??_, _??__??__??_, _??__??__??_.It may be said that Yoshinaga Motoki and his son played an important role in the translation of shichiyo.In the process of his translation, he seemed to refer to Latin. How was he able to have a knowledge of Latin? In 1595, Christian missionaries made a Latin-Portuguese-Japanese dictionary in Amakusa. He could consult this dictionary.After presenting a report at the regular monthly meeting in May, 1988, the writer knew that shichiyo appeared as _??__??_, _??_, _??_, _??_, _??_, _??_, _??_ in ‘Midokampakuki’ by Michinaga Fujiwara (998). Why were they in the same order as in the present use?What is the relation between the theory of the five natural elements _??__??__??__??__??_ (i.e. wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and the naming of shichiyo?The writer hopes this paper will help scholars make further studies.

農業分野に応用可能な蛍光色素として,ベンゾトリアゾール系青色蛍光色素が対応する5-カルボキシ-2-(4-ヒドロキシフェニル)-2H-ベンゾトリアゾールから合成した。この蛍光色素をポリカーボネートに含有させ押出成形機で青紫蛍光フィルムを作製した。その蛍光特性は,蛍光主波長が410 nm,蛍光量子収率74%の高効率な発光を示し,優れた耐光性も示した。この蛍光フィルムは,太陽光の下で紫外光を青紫光に波長変換することができることを分光放射光量計の測定で示した。この青紫蛍光フィルムをトマト栽培に使用することで,トマト果実のリコピン含量が著しく増加することを見いだした。また,このリコピン含量の増加は,果皮表面の色彩測定でも明らかになり,対照区(フィルムの無)の完熟トマトと比較して,色差△a*値で2~6増加することがわかった。

Professor Minoru Umegaki and Mr. Sobei Arakawa were the two teachers of the greatest importance to the writer. The writer, though not taught by these teachers either in high school or in university, was greatly influenced by them when he was young.At first the writer was very interested in the loan words of foreign origin. After reading books by Professor Umegaki and Mr.Arakawa, the two greatest authorities on the words of foreign origin, the writer knew that they had both been given the Okakura prize when they were in their early forties.However, after consulting available dictionaries and glossaries, the writer was unable to find even a mention of the Okakura prize, or the past winners of the prize.Based on careful research of the editor's columns, of the past issues of THE RISING GENERATION, the well-known magazine for English literature and English education, the writer explains how the Okakura prize was begun in memory of Yoshisaburo Okakura, a famous scholar and teacher of English. The writer also lists winners of the Okakura prize and Okakura prize for English education.It is a pity that these two prizes were discontinued in 1946, a year after the end of World War II. After the war, the Okakura prize for English education was in a sense replaced by the Palmer prize, which has survived to the present day.This report is based on the paper read by the writer at the 39th national meeting of our Society on October 6, 2002.

This report is based on a reading, by the writer, which took place at our Society's 41st national meeting on 31st October, 2004. The year 2004 was a special year for both our Society and Japan as it jointly marked the 40th anniversary of the foundation of our Society and the 150th anniversary of the conclusion of the U.S.-Japan Peace Treaty in the Edo era. This memorable meeting was held at the International Conference Hall at Waseda University, which has had close links to English Language studies in Japan. As one of the main themes of the meeting was English Language studies at Waseda University, the writer read a paper on the late Prof. Katsumata during histime at Waseda University and his close study of『英和対訳袖珍辞書』.In 1914, Professor Katsumata, a famous scholar and teacher of English, contributed an article 'On the first Dictionary of the English and Japanese Languages' to『英語青年』=THE RISING GENERATION, the well-knownmagazine for English literature and education. By making a comparison between the treatises of Dr. Fumihiko Otsuki and Prof. Katsumata, the writer explicitly points out that in the article contributed by Prof. Katsumata to 'THE RISING GENERATION', the fact was revealed for the first time thatonly two hundred copies of the first edition of『英和対訳袖珍辞書』were printed in 1862.The writer also indicates the probability of the second printing of the firstedition of『英和対訳袖珍辞書』.

Because of amendment of the Construction Standard Law, almost all houses must equip with a full time mechanical ventilation system. However, people could feel cold draft in sanitary area when the ventilation system provides sufficient volume of air. So, an investigation using thermal manikin was carried out to find out proper exhaust flow rate from thermal sensational point of view. It was found that flow rate less than 20 CMH and 50 CMH would be appropriate for bathroom and toilet, respectively to avoid uncomfortable sensation in cold season based on the evaluated EHT and PMV.

The experiment was conducted in order to clarify influences of outdoor air supplied through openings on thermal environment in rooms heated by floor heating systems. The ari supply openings of various heights and types were used in respective experiment cases. The following results were obtained: (1) Draught Rating (DR) was increased by sypplied outdoor air in any heights of air supply openings and openings with natural ventilation systems. The DR in areas near the air supply openings were higher than DR in far area. (2) Influences of outdoor air supplied through openings in the heights of more than 1600mm above floor were small on thermal environment. (3) The air supply openings with mechanical ventilaion systems made better thermal temperature than openings with natural ventilation systems because mechanical ventilaion systems controled temperatures of supply air.

In this report, the results of performance confirmation of fire-resistant wood members and beam-column joints, and the contents of application cases were reported. The main points are as follows. The refractory sheet was found to have the effect of reducing the temperature of the reinforced gypsum board. It was confirmed that the fire-resistant wood columns, fire-resistant wood beams, fire-resistant wood members, and column-beam joints made of Pc joint members incorporating fire-resistant foam sheets of heat-foamed material have 1 hour of fire resistance without carbonization in the core material.

一般的には疑問代名詞として分類される「なに」には,極性疑問文の中で感動詞的に使われる用法がある.本研究は自然な日常会話におけるそのような「なに」について,認識的スタンスの標識として記述を行い,その相互行為上の働きについて論じる.まず,極性疑問文における「なに」は,会話の相手が明示的には述べていないことに対して話し手が確認を要求する際に用いられる.そのような環境における「なに」は,相手に確認を求める内容が,先行する会話の中で得た手がかり等の不十分な証拠に基づいて推論を行うことで得られたものであり,その正しさについて強い確信を持たないという話し手の認識的スタンスを標識するものである.さらに,「なに」は発話が行われる個々の文脈に応じて,確認内容に対する驚きおよび否定的態度等の情動表出や,からかいまたは話題転換等の行為を行う資源としても働く.
