The effect of maternal occupational non-ionizing radiation (NIR) exposure from MRI on premature birth and low birth weight delivery was analyzed based on questionnaire survey (263 employees, 443 births). Although the highest occurrence rates of both outcomes were observed in the group whose NIR exposure occurred only before pregnancy, no statistical significance was detected.

For many countries in the world, 5G is of strategic significance. In the 5G era, telecom operators are expected to enable and provide multiple services with different communication characteristics like enhanced broadband, ultra-reliable and extreme real-time communications at the same time. To meet the requirements, the 5G network essentially will be more complex compared with traditional 3G/4G networks. The unique characteristics of 5G resulted from new technologies bring a lot of opportunities as well as significant challenges. In this paper we first introduce 5G vision and check the global status. And then we illustrate the 5G technical essentials and point out the new opportunities that 5G will bring to us. We also highlight the coming challenges and share our 5G experience and solutions toward 5G vision in many aspects, including network, management and business.

「けど」は日本語の会話においてもっとも頻繁に使われる表現の一つであるが、特に「んだ」と共起して「んだけど」の形で用いられる場合が多い(本研究のデータは「けど節」全体の 58% が「んだ + けど」)。これは、「んだ」と「けど」が組み合わされることによってそれぞれの機能や特性が結合し、会話で頻繁に用いられる何らかの効果を生み出しているのにその理由があると考えられるのである。本研究の目的は、会話における「けど」の役割や「んだ」 の特性を調べ、これらの結合のメカニズムを明らかにすることである。 分析の結果をまとめると、まず、発話に「けど節」が主節(本稿では「関連要素」)と一緒に現れた場合に、「けど節」は「前置き」または「補足」としての役割を果たすが、ここで「んだ + けど」の組み合わせは、聞き手の注意を喚起する働きを持つ。また主節は現れず「けど節」が単独で使われた場合には、「んだ + けど」は、一方では話し手の気持ちを一通り表し、他方ではそれがあまり強く直線的にならないように抑える二重的な働きを持つ。この二重的な働きにより話し手は自分の気持ち感情を過不足なく表すことができ、また聞き手の注意を喚起する働きにしても、主節における主メッセージを相手に理解してもらう上で重要である。このようにして「んだけど」の表現は、円滑なコミュニケーションを行なう上で重要なストラテジーとして好まれるのだと考えられる。

In the course of screening anti-adipogenic activity of natural products employing the preadipocyte cell line, 3T3-L1 as an in vitro assay system, the EtOAc fraction of the stem barks of Fraxinus rhynchophylla DENCE (Oleaceae) showed significant inhibitory activity on adipocyte differentiation as assessed by measuring fat accumulation using Oil Red O staining. Activity-guided fractionation led to the isolation of six coumarins such as esculetin (1), scopoletin (2), fraxetin (3), fraxidin (4) esculin (5) and fraxin (6). Among the six coumarins isolated, esculetin (1) showed the most potent inhibitory activity on adipocyte differentiation, followed by fraxetin (3). Further studies with interval treatment demonstrated that esculetin (1) exerted inhibitory activity on adipocyte differentiation when treated within 2 d (days 0—2) after differentiation induction. We further investigated the effect of esculetin (1) on peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ (PPARγ), one of the early adipogenic transcription factors. Esculetin (1) significantly blocked the induction of PPARγ protein expression and inhibited adipocyte differentiation induced by troglitazone, a PPARγ agonist. Taken together, these results suggest that esculetin (1), an active compound from F. rhynchophylla, inhibited early stage of adipogenic differentiation, in part, via inhibition of PPARγ-dependent pathway.

OMOTENASHI is a 6U CubeSat that will be launched in 2019 by the Space Launch System (SLS) with the objective of landing on the Moon. The CubeSat is planned to perform two deterministic maneuvers. The first maneuver (DV1) by gas jet propulsion system transfers the probe from the nominal SLS trajectory to a lunar targeted trajectory. The second maneuver (DV2) is applied by the solid rocket motor before landing to counteract the vertical component of the S/C velocity. The high approach speed at the Moon, combined with large errors induced by the solid motor, requires the probe to approach the Moon with a shallow Flight Path Angle (FPA). If the angle is too steep, expected errors in the DV2 may cause the probe to crash. However, a shallow FPA increases the probability of a Moon-flyby or collision with the local topography. In this paper, we present a design method for Earth-Moon transfer trajectory robust to orbit determination (OD) and DV1 execution errors. First step consists of a grid search to determine the nominal DV1 vector with four candidates obtained. Subsequent error analysis suggests the need for a Trajectory Correction Maneuver (TCM). For the two scenarios of OD error provided by the navigation team, an error analysis was conducted including the TCM. Two realistic OD error scenarios were considered: 30 min or 3 hours of two-way Doppler and range measurement. Error analysis conducted considering TCM shows the need for 3 hours of OD to achieve nearly 100% of transfer success rate.

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is effective in reducing morbidity and mortality in systolic heart failure patients with cardiac dyssynchrony as demonstrated in studies with primarily Western populations. Although CRT devices with a defibrillator (CRT-D) became available in Japan since 2006, their efficacy remains uncertain in Japanese patients. In this prospective, multicenter study, the efficacy of CRT-D therapy in an all-Japanese population was compared with the study conducted in the US, Multicenter InSync ICD Randomized Clinical Evaluation (MIRACLE-ICD). Methods and Results: Ninety-three patients were evaluated according to the subject selection criteria of the MIRACLE-ICD study, and 80 patients were enrolled. Results at baseline and 6-month post-CRT-D implantation were compared in terms of composite clinical response (CCR) and other secondary endpoints. Quality of life (QOL) was assessed with a validated Japanese version of the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure questionnaire. CCR was improved in 55 patients (68.8%), unchanged in 14 (17.5%), and worsened in 11 patients (13.7%) (MIRACLE-ICD general phase: 62.0%, 13.4% and 24.6%, respectively). Non-inferiority was verified by 1-sided test with 10% equivalence margin. QOL score improved significantly (50.0±26.2 vs. 23.6±20.2, P<0.01). Conclusions: The MOMIJI study demonstrated that CRT-D effectiveness as assessed with CCR was non-inferior to the trials conducted outside Japan, thus suggesting that the benefits of CRT-D are similar between Japanese and non-Japanese patients.  (Circ J 2012; 76: 1911–1919)

Lachrymatory factor synthase (LFS), an enzyme essential for the synthesis of the onion lachrymatory factor (propanethial S-oxide), was identified in 2002. This was the first reported enzyme involved in the production of thioaldehyde S-oxides via an intra-molecular H+ substitution reaction, and we therefore attempted to identify the catalytic amino acid residues of LFS as the first step in elucidating the unique catalytic reaction mechanism of this enzyme. A comparison of the LFS cDNA sequences among lachrymatory Allium plants, a deletion analysis and site-directed mutagenesis enabled us to identify two amino acids (Arg71 and Glu88) that were indispensable to the LFS activity. Homology modeling was performed for LFS/23–169 on the basis of the template structure of a pyrabactin resistance 1-like protein (PYL) which had been selected from a BLASTP search on SWISS-MODEL against LFS/23–169. We identified in the modeled structure of LFS a pocket corresponding to the ligand-binding site in PYL, and Arg71 and Glu88 were located in this pocket.

In patients with atrial septal defect (ASD), atrial left-to-right shunting causes left atrial (LA) remodeling and dysfunction, leading to atrial fibrillation (AF). In adults with ASD and concomitant AF, LA function should be evaluated after ASD closure plus AF radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA).This multicenter retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent transcatheter ASD closure at one of the four leading hospitals. Patients with a history of AF also underwent preceding RFCA. The association between AF history and LA ejection fraction (EF) (indicating LA global function) at 6-12 months following ASD closure was evaluated. To account for differences in baseline characteristics between patients with and without a history of AF, we conducted the following statistical methods: (1) multivariate regression analysis in the prepropensity score (PS)-matched cohort and (2) univariate comparisons in the PS-matched cohort.Overall, this study included 231 patients (30 with AF history, 201 without). Multiple regression analysis showed that AF history was independently associated with impaired LAEF (β = −10.425, P < 0.001, model created prior to propensity matching). A one-to-one PS matching (25 pairs) showed that the LAEF at 6-12 months following ASD closure was significantly impaired in patients with ASD and AF history compared to that in patients without history of AF (median LAEF, 37.5% (interquartile range [IQR] 29.4%-48.5%) versus 52.3 [IQR 50.0%-56.6%]; P < 0.001).LA function was impaired in patients with ASD and a history of AF at 6-12 months after successful transcatheter ASD closure and on maintenance of sinus rhythm by RFCA.

A genetically modified (GM) strain of the diatom Chaetoceros gracilis expressing the phosphite dehydrogenase gene (ptxD), which is a useful gene both for the biological containment and the avoidance of microbial contamination, was characterized to estimate the risk against the biodiversity by laboratory experiments. GM strain could grow in the medium containing phosphite as a sole source of phosphorus, while its general characteristics such as growth, salt tolerance, heat and dehydration resistance in the normal phosphate-containing medium were equivalent to those of wild type (WT) strain. The increase in potential toxicity of GM strain against plant, crustacean, fish and mammal was also disproved. The dispersal ability of WT strain cultured in an outdoor raceway pond was investigated for 28 days by detecting the psb31 gene in vessels, settled at variable distances (between 5 and 60 m) from the pond. The diatom was detected only in one vessel placed 5 m apart. To estimate the influence on the environment, WT and GM strains were inoculated into freshwater, seawater and soil. The influence on the microbiome in those samples was assessed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, in addition to the analysis of the survivability of those strains in the freshwater and the seawater. The results indicated that the effect to the microbiome and the survivability were comparable between WT and GM strains. All results showed that the introduction of the ptxD gene into the diatom had a low risk on biodiversity.

Serum vitamin B12 levels and unsaturated vitamin B12 binding capacities were measured in 24 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), 73 patients with other neurological disorders and 21 healthy subjects. There was no decrease in the vitamin B12 levels, however, a significant decrease in the unsaturated vitamin B12 binding capacities was observed in patients with MS when compared with other groups. A massive dose of methyl vitamin B12 (60 mg every day for 6 months) was administered to 6 patients with chronic progressive MS, a disease which usually had a morbid prognosis and widespread demyelination in the central nervous system. Although the motor disability did not improve clinically, the abnormalities in both the visual and brainstem auditory evoked potentials improved more frequently during the therapy than in the pre-treatment period. We therefore consider that a massive dose methyl vitamin B12 therapy may be useful as an adjunct to immunosuppressive treatment for chronic progressive MS.(Internal Medicine 33: 82-86, 1994)

A 14-year-old spayed female Shih-Tzu was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Konkuk University for evaluation of an abdominal mass. In diagnostic imaging, two large cystic masses were identified. The affected liver lobes were surgically resected, and the specimens were submitted for histopathological evaluation and immunohistochemical staining. The two cystic lesions were diagnosed as biliary cystadenocarcinoma (BCAC). Recurrence and regional invasion were identified on ultrasonography 36 days postoperatively. The patient died on postoperative day 271. To the best of our knowledge, previously reported case studies of BCAC in dogs presented limited clinical information. In this report, we present a detailed picture comprising a range of clinical information and histopathological examination of BCAC in a dog.

We attempted a switch of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors from sirolimus to everolimus, a derivative of sirolimus and now on the market in Japan, in two pancreatic islet transplant patients. Both patients were administered tacrolimus with sirolimus or everolimus. They had been administered 5 or 9 mg sirolimus once a day and had maintained a trough concentration of about 15 ng/mL as measured by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. After the switch from sirolimus to everolimus, they were given 10 or 12 mg/day of everolimus twice a day to maintain a trough concentration of 12-15 ng/mL as measured by a fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) method. Afterward, the blood concentrations of everolimus and sirolimus after the conversion were measured by high performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry and everolimus concentrations were found to be 5-10 ng/mL. These data show that a larger dosage is needed for everolimus than sirolimus to maintain the same trough blood concentration. Data obtained by the FPIA for everolimus should be carefully evaluated after switching from sirolimus to everolimus because of the cross-reactivity of the antibody with sirolimus.

Certain nutrients stimulate glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion from the intestinal enteroendocrine L-cells, but due to rapid degradation by the DPP-4 enzyme, >90% is converted to inactive metabolite before reaching the target organs via circulation. Plants are a source of potent bioactive compounds that promote endogenous secretion of GLP-1 from L-cells. To search for the effective bioactive compound from a vast library of natural compounds, a reliable and low-cost assay is required considering the high cost of commercial assays. We developed a low-cost sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (s-‍ELISAs) for detecting ‘total’, ‘sensitive active’, and ‘wide-range active’ GLP-1. The s-ELISAs exhibited high sensitivity with measurement ranges between 0.94~240, 0.98~62.5, and 4.8~4,480 pmol/L, respectively. High precision was observed; i.e., CVs within 5% and 20% for intra- and inter-assay variations, respectively, and excellent recovery of exogenous GLP-1 from assay buffer. The developed s-ELISAs had the same performance as the commercial kits and approximately 80% cheaper cost. For their application, cinnamtannin A2-induced GLP-1 secretion was confirmed in STC-1 cells consistent with our previous findings. The s-ELISAs were further validated by measuring plasma GLP-1 level in mice after oral administration of black soy bean seed coat extract containing cinnamtannin A2.

Brassinosteroid (BR) is a phytohormone that acts as important regulator of plant growth. To identify novel transcription factors that may be involved in unknown mechanisms of BR signaling, we screened the chimeric repressor expressing plants (CRES-T), in which transcription factors were converted into chimeric repressors by the fusion of SRDX plant-specific repression domain, to identify those that affect the expression of BR inducible genes. Here, we identified a homeobox-leucine zipper type transcription factor, BRASSINOSTEROID-RELATED-HOMEOBOX 3 (BHB3), of which a chimeric repressor expressing plants (BHB3-sx) significantly downregulated the expression of BAS1 and SAUR-AC1 that are BR inducible genes. Interestingly, ectopic expression of BHB3 (BHB3-ox) also repressed the BR inducible genes and shorten hypocotyl that would be similar to a BR-deficient phenotype. Interestingly, both BHB3-sx and BHB3-ox showed pale green phenotype, in which the expression of genes related photosynthesis and chlorophyll contents were significantly decreased. We found that BHB3 contains three motifs similar to the conserved EAR-repression domain, suggesting that BHB3 may act as a transcriptional repressor. These results indicate that BHB3 might play an important role not only to the BR signaling but also the regulation of greenings.

The brassinosteroid (BR) phytohormone is an important regulator of plant growth. To identify novel transcription factors that regulate BR responses, we screened chimeric repressor gene silencing technology (CRES-T) plants, in which transcription factors were converted into chimeric repressors by the fusion of SRDX plant-specific repression domain, with brassinazole (Brz), an inhibitor of BR biosynthesis. We identified that a line that expressed the chimeric repressor for zinc finger homeobox transcription factor, BRASSINOSTEORID-RELATED-HOMEOBOX-2 (BHB2-sx), exhibited Brz-hypersensitive phenotype with shorter hypocotyl under dark, dwarf and round and dark green leaves similar to BR-deficient phenotype. Similar to BHB2-sx plants, bhb2 knockout mutant also exhibited Brz hypersensitive phenotype. In contrast, ectopic expression of BHB2 (BHB2-ox) showed hypocotyl elongation phenotype (BR excessive), showing decrease to Brz sensitivity. The expression of the DWF4 and CPD BR biosynthesis genes was repressed in BHB2-sx plants, whereas it was enhanced in BHB2-ox plants. The BR deficient-like phenotype of BHB2-sx plants was partially restored by treatment with brassinolide (BL), indicating that the BR deficient phenotype of BHB2-sx plant may be due to suppression of BR biosynthesis. Our results indicate that BHB2 is a positive regulator of BR response may be due to the promotion of BR biosynthesis genes.

Blackberry is an economically important crop in Mexico, and its yield is substantially reduced by gray mold, a disease caused by Botrytis cinerea. One of the means to obtain B. cinerea-resistant plants is gamma irradiation. Shoot tips of in vitro-micropropagated blackberry plants (Rubus fruticosus ‘Tupy’) were irradiated with five doses of Cobalt-60 gamma radiation (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 Gy) and cultured on Murashige and Skoog basal medium containing 1.0 mg l−1 benzylaminopurine and 0.06 mg l−1 indole-3-butyric acid (MSB medium). After 28 days of culture, survival was evaluated to determine mean lethal dose (LD50), and 200 shoots were further irradiated at the determined LD50 (30.8 Gy). After 28 days, the surviving shoots were micropropagated on MSB medium for 60 days. Non-irradiated shoots were screened for the in vitro selection of resistant B. cinerea, exposing them to different concentrations of sterile culture filtrate of B. cinerea (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 g l−1) for 28 days to determine mean lethal concentration (LC50), and the irradiated surviving shoots were further exposed to the determined LC50 (4.6 g l−1). Three surviving lines (rfgum5, rfgum6, and rfgum17) that did not present changes compared with the control shoots were micropropagated to obtain plantlets, which were further subjected to in vitro resistance assays using detached leaves inoculated with B. cinerea (1×103 spores ml−1). Plants of rfgum5 and rfgum6 mutant lines were highly resistant and presented similar growth to control plants. Therefore, this methodology is useful to obtain B. cinerea-resistant blackberry plants.

An Arabidopsis NAC domain transcription factor VND-INTERACTING2 (VNI2) was originally isolated as an interacting protein with another NAC domain transcription factor, VASCULAR-RELATED NAC-DOMAIN7 (VND7), a master regulator of xylem vessel element differentiation. VNI2 inhibits transcriptional activation activity of VND7 by forming a protein complex. Here, to obtain insights into how VNI2 regulates VND7, we tried to identify the amino acid region of VNI2 required for inhibition of VND7. VNI2 has an amino acid sequence similar to the ETHYLENE-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT BINDING FACTOR (ERF)-associated amphiphilic repression (EAR) motif, conserved in transcriptional repressors, at the C-terminus. A transient expression assay showed that the EAR-like motif of VNI2 was not required for inhibition of VND7. The C-terminal deletion series of VNI2 revealed that 10 amino acid residues, highly conserved in the VNI2 orthologs contributed to effective repression of the transcriptional activation activity of VND7. Observation of transgenic plants ectopically expressing VNI2 showed that the identified 10 amino acid sequence strongly affected xylem vessel formation and plant growth. These data indicated that the 10 amino acid sequence of VNI2 has an important role in its transcriptional repression activity and negative regulation of xylem vessel formation.
