We attempted to shorten the juvenile phase of southern highbush blueberries by using controlled rooms under artificial light. Seeds were extracted from fresh fruits and sowed in the Woody Plant Medium (WPM) immediately after harvest. When these seeds were irradiated with red LED, their germination rate was over 80% by the 35 days after sowing. The seedlings in the controlled room continued to grow without entering the dormant phase. Especially, maximum growth was observed under the long-day condition of 12-h light. Even under the short-day condition of 8-h light, increased growth was observed when grown at a high light intensity (400 μmol·m−2·s−1). For the seedlings that were moved from the long-day controlled room to the short-day controlled room after 10 months, the ‘Misty’ seedlings flowered within 327 days after sowing while the ‘Sharpblue’ seedlings flowered within 357 days after sowing. Furthermore, when cultivated under the short-day condition at 400 μmol·m−2·s−1 for the entire length of the experiment, the flowering of ‘Misty’ seedlings was observed within 300 days after sowing. The seedlings maintained under the short day condition of high light intensity flowered earlier than seedlings moved from the long-day controlled room to the short-day controlled room. Thus, southern highbush blueberries were successfully induced to flower in less than a year from seed planting, using a combination of techniques to promote germination and control the growth environment conditions in a controlled room.

Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) can be difficult to diagnose, particularly in mild cases where some of the standard triad of symptoms (external ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and loss of deep tendon reflex) are absent. We herein report a case of the incomplete form of MFS diagnosed in a 54-year-old Japanese man who presented only with ataxia symptoms and was positive for the anti-GQ1b antibody. However, the patient also suffered from dysgeusia, a significant impairment of taste perception. We propose that dysgeusia in acute-onset ataxia cases may constitute an important clinical feature to aid in the diagnosis of the incomplete form of MFS.

Dedifferentiated fat (DFAT) cells were isolated from mature adipocytes using the ceiling culture method. Recently, we successfully isolated DFAT cells from adipocytes with a relatively small size (<40 μm). DFAT cells have a higher osteogenic potential than that of medium adipocytes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of collagenase solution for isolating small adipocytes from human buccal fat pads (BFPs). Four concentrations of collagenase solution (0.01%, 0.02%, 0.1%, and 0.5%) were used, and their effectiveness was assessed by the number of small adipocytes and DFAT cells isolated. The total number of floating adipocytes that dissociated with 0.02% collagenase was 2.5 times of that dissociated with 0.1% collagenase. The number of floating adipocytes with a diameter of ≤29 μm that dissociated with 0.02% collagenase was thrice of those dissociated with 0.1% and 0.5% collagenase. The number of DFAT cells that dissociated with 0.02% collagenase was 1.5 times of that dissociated with 0.1% collagenase. In addition, DFAT cells that dissociated with 0.02% collagenase had a higher osteogenic differentiation potential than those that dissociated with 0.1% collagenase. These results suggest that 0.02% is the optimal collagenase concentration for isolating small adipocytes from BFPs.

Resurgence to target L-type voltage-dependent calcium channels has been applied by the synthesis of two series of nifedipine analogues where the ortho- or a meta-nitrophenyl ring is retained. A pre-synthetic molecular docking study with a receptor model followed by molecular alignment has been performed on 47 compounds to predict the most active member. The IC50 values revealed that some of the compounds are similar to or more active than nifedipine. Substitution of groups at the 3- and 5-positions of the dihydropyridine (DHP) ring gave 3k, which is more active than nifedipine. Our valid three-dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationship (3D-QSAR) model prefigures the influence of lipophilicity, bulkiness and chelating effects of the C3 and C5 substituents. Bulky groups interfere with ring-to-ring hydrophobic interaction with tyrosine (Tyr)4311 and limit the efficiency of increasing the length of the hydrocarbon chain of esters at the 3- and 5-positions of the DHP ring as an approach to increasing the activity. The presence of a chelating substituent on the phenyl ring at the 4-position of the DHP ring ensures strong binding to the receptor and hence stabilization of the closed-channel conformation. The validation of 3D-QSAR model indicated its proficiency in predicting activity of newly compounds belonging to the same chemical class.

The global occurrence of viral infectious diseases poses a significant threat to human health. Dengue virus (DENV) infection is one of the most noteworthy of these infections. According to a WHO survey, approximately 400 million people are infected annually; symptoms deteriorate in approximately one percent of cases. Numerous foundational and clinical investigations on viral epidemiology, structure and function analysis, infection source and route, therapeutic targets, vaccines, and therapeutic drugs have been conducted by both academic and industrial researchers. At present, CYD-TDV or Dengvaxia® is the only approved vaccine, but potent inhibitors are currently under development. In this review, an overview of the viral life circle and the history of DENVs is presented, and the most recently reported antiviral candidates and newly discovered promising targets are focused and summarized. We believe that these successes and failures have enabled progress in anti-DENV drug discovery and hope that our review will stimulate further innovation in this area.

Background:Although hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, whether antiviral therapy (AVT) can reduce heart failure (HF) hospitalizations is unknown.Methods and Results:In this population-based cohort study, we used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to evaluate the effect of interferon-based therapy (IBT) on cardiovascular events in patients with chronic HCV infection. Clinical outcomes evaluated included HF hospitalizations; a composite of acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and peripheral artery disease; all-cause death; and cardiovascular death. Of 83,229 eligible patients with chronic HCV infection, we compared 16,284 patients who received IBT with untreated subjects after propensity score matching. Patients who received IBT were less likely to be hospitalized for HF compared with untreated subjects (incidence density.ID, 0.9 vs. 1.5 events per 103person-years; hazard ratio.HR, 0.58; 95% confidence interval.CI, 0.42–0.79; P=0.001). Compared with untreated subjects, the treated group had significantly lower risk of composite vascular events (ID, 3.7 vs. 5.0 events per 103person-years; P<0.001), all-cause death (ID, 5.6 vs. 17.2 events per 103person-years; P<0.001), and cardiovascular death (ID, 0.2 vs. 0.6 events per 103person-years; P=0.001).Conclusions:AVT for chronic HCV infection might offer protection against HF hospitalizations, critical vascular events, and cardiovascular death beyond known beneficial effects.

Vitamin B12 contents of green (0046-0263 and 0, 125-0535μg/ 100g dry weight), blue (0.068-0.081 and 0.525-0.528μg/100g dry weight), red (0.061 and 0.663μg/100g dry weight), and black (0.104-0.859 and 0.305-1.20μg/100g dry weight) tea leaves were obtained by intrinsic factor-chemiluminescence and microbiological methods, respectively. Although vitamin Bit was found in all tea leaves tested by both assay methods, the higher values by the microbiological method were not due to occurrence of both deoxyribosides and deoxynucleotides (known as an alkali-resistant factor), but may have been due to that of inactive corrinoid compounds for mammals in the tea leaves.

In order to improve the culturability and biomass production of rhizobacteria, we previously introduced plant-only-based culture media. We herein attempted to widen the scope of plant materials suitable for the preparation of plant-only-based culture media. We chemically analyzed the refuse of turfgrass, cactus, and clover. They were sufficiently rich to support good in vitro growth by rhizobacteria isolates representing Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. They were also adequate and efficient to produce a cell biomass in liquid batch cultures. These culture media were as sufficient as artificial culture media for the cultivation and recovery of the in situ rhizobacteria of barley (Hordeum murinum L.). Based on culture-dependent (CFU plate counting) and culture-independent analyses (qPCR), mowed turfgrass, in particular, supported the highest culturable population of barley endophytes, representing >16% of the total bacterial number quantified with qPCR. This accurately reflected the endophytic community composition, in terms of diversity indices (S’, H’, and D’) based on PCR-DGGE, and clustered the plant culture media together with the qPCR root populations away from the artificial culture media. Despite the promiscuous nature of the plant materials tested to culture the plant microbiome, our results indicated that plant materials of a homologous nature to the tested host plant, at least at the family level, and/or of the same environment were more likely to be selected. Plant-only-based culture media require further refinements in order to provide selectivity for the in vitro growth of members of the plant microbiome, particularly difficult-to-culture bacteria. This will provide insights into their hidden roles in the environment and support future culturomic studies.

[Purpose] This study examined the effects of visual feedback balance training on the balance and ankle instability in adult men with functional ankle instability. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty eight adults with functional ankle instability, divided randomly into an experimental group, which performed visual feedback balance training for 20 minutes and ankle joint exercises for 10 minutes, and a control group, which performed ankle joint exercise for 30 minutes. Exercises were completed three times a week for 8 weeks. Bio rescue was used for balance ability. It measured limit of stability at one minute. For ankle instability was measured using Cumberland ankle instability tool (CAIT). This measure was performed before and after the experiments in each group. [Results] The experimental group had significant increase in the Limit of Stability and CAIT score. The control group had significant increase in CAIT score. While the Limit of Stability increased without significance. [Conclusion] In conclusion, visual feedback balance training can be recommended as a treatment method for patients with functional ankle instability.

本報告は、アジアンデザイン研究所の活動としてアジアの山車文化についてデザイン的視点から調査、研究を進めるものである。研究所では開設以来、アジア各地域でみられる祭礼の多様な山車の造形的特徴、象徴性、世界観、その仕組みと社会や環境との関係性などについて、継続的に取り組んできた。本年度は、開催を予定していた国際シンポジウムを都合でとりやめ、そのための準備などを中心に活動を行なった。アジアの舟形の山車についてその造形的な特徴として鳥や龍(蛇)などが多用されるが、そのための研究会を開催した。またタイ南部のチャプクラ祭の現地調査を実施し、ナーガ(蛇)のモチーフで飾られた舟形山車、ミャンマーのインレー湖でのパウンドーウー祭にでる伝説の鳥「カラウェイ」を模した鳥形の黄金船など現地での取材も実施した。また、国内の太鼓台調査(岡山県倉敷市乙島の千歳楽)、中国浙江省前童鎮の鼓亭調査も継続して行ない、さらに理解を深めた。これらの一連の活動により、アジアのデザインについていくつかの重要な知見を得ることができた。これらの成果をもとにさらに継続的な調査を続け、社会構造、空間構造とも関連づけて、総体的に祭礼の仕組みと山車の造形を把握していく予定である。This report deals with the main research theme of Research Institute of Asian Design (RIAD), focusing the cultures of mountain floats in Asia from design-centered approach. We want to make clear design technique (language) of mountain floats from their wide variety of forms, symbolic meanings, cosmology and their relationship of society and natural environments.We made some preparations for 2nd international symposium, because the symposium was postponed next year. We could find frequently characteristic motifs of sacred bird and dragon (or snake) in mountain floats of Asia. So, overseas researches are made at southern region of Thailand and central district of Myanmar in order to certificate the symbolic meanings and structures of float.We had also investigations of new year festival in Qiantong, Ninbo city, China and Senzairaku in Okayama Prefecture, which is another type of mountain floats in Japan.

A one-year-old male Golden Retriever presented with acute onset of vomiting and hemorrhagic diarrhea since 2 days. The dog was depressed, showing abdominal pain, 12% dehydration, tachycardia, and a bounding pulse. Diagnostic imaging showed severe dilatation and fluid retention of the entire gastrointestinal tract with decreased motility. A foreign body was found in the gastroduodenal region, but there was no obstruction or plication. The dog was tentatively diagnosed with acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome and rapidly recovered after supportive treatment. However, on the morning of day 4, anorexia and vomiting recurred, and diagnostic imaging revealed intestinal plication with free peritoneal fluid, not found on the previous image. An emergency laparotomy revealed the foreign body to be two used feminine hygiene products. These contaminated products were suspected to induce acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome, and led to subsequent complication in this large dog.

Rice stocks carrying one or more recessive marker genes were fertilized with pollen of a stock carrying normal alleles at the corresponding loci, that had been preirradiated with gamma rays. Plants derived from such hybridization were investigated for their marker genes, morphological features and seed fertility. Fifty-two pseudo-dominant plants for 9 marker genes were detected from 13,063 plants of 10 cross combinations, and a number of other plants that did not show pseudo-dominant for any marker genes but had variations in morphological features and/or seed fertility, were also obtained. The chromosome number of those plants were counted in the root tip cells, and plants with 2n= 12, 2n=23, 2n=23+1Fr (fragment chromosome), 2n=23+2Fr, 2n=23+3Fr, 2n=25, and chromosome interchange heterozygous, were observed. This study suggests that the use of irradiated pollen is an effective method for inducing chromosome aberration, such as chromosome deficiency, monosomics and chromosome interchange in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

The temporal saturation effects of the critical dimensions of nanoscale contact holes are investigated by a two-dimensional reaction–diffusion simulator for the chemical shrink techniques of nanolithography. Models included with the simulator are the crosslinking reaction of water-soluble polymers and crosslinkers, the diffusion of photoacids, and the inactivation of photoacids. Within the the statistical errors of the experimental data, the simulation critical dimensions agree with the experiment for baking temperatures over 105°C and for all baking times. It is found that the temporal saturation of the contact holes' critical dimensions can be explained by the photoacid inactivating reaction included in the simulator.

Ginseng, the root of Panax species, is a well-known herbal medicine. It has been used as a traditional medicine in China, Korea, and Japan for thousands of years and is now a popular and worldwide used natural medicine. The active ingredients of ginseng are ginsenosides which are also called ginseng saponins. Recently, there is increasing evidence in the literature on the pharmacological and physiological actions of ginseng. However, ginseng has been used primarily as a tonic to invigorate week bodies and help the restoration of homeostasis. Current in vivo and in vitro studies have shown its beneficial effects in a wide range of pathological conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, immune deficiency, and hepatotoxicity. Moreover, recent research has suggested that some of ginseng’s active ingredients also exert beneficial effects on aging, central nervous system (CNS) disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. In general, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and immune-stimulatory activities are mostly underlying the possible ginseng-mediated protective mechanisms. Next to animal studies, data from neural cell cultures contribute to the understanding of these mechanisms that involve decreasing nitric oxide (NO), scavenging of free radicals, and counteracting excitotoxicity. In this review, we focus on recently reported medicinal effects of ginseng and summarize the current knowledge of its effects on CNS disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
