Microbial symbionts are essential for plant niche expansion into novel habitats. Dormant propagules of ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi are thought to play an important role in seedling establishment in invasion fronts; however, propagule bank communities above the treeline are poorly understood in the Eurasian Arctic, where treelines are expected to advance under rapid climate change. To investigate the availability of EM fungal propagules, we collected 100 soil samples from Arctic tundra sites and applied bioassay experiments using Larix cajanderi as bait seedlings. We detected 11 EM fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) by obtaining entire ITS regions. Suillus clintonianus was the most frequently observed OTU, followed by Cenococcum geophilum and Sebacinales OTU1. Three Suillus and one Rhizopogon species were detected in the bioassay seedlings, indicating the availability of Larix-specific suilloid spores at least 30 km from the contemporary treeline. Spores of S. clintonianus and S. spectabilis remained infective after preservation for 14 mo and heat treatment at 60 °C, implying the durability of the spores. Long-distance dispersal capability and spore resistance to adverse conditions may represent ecological strategies employed by suilloid fungi to quickly associate with emerging seedlings of compatible hosts in treeless habitats.

タスマン海南部で漁獲されたネズミザメ属12個体をプロポーション計測値, 歯の構造および配列, 体色にもとづいて調査した結果, 標本はL.nasusと同定した.またオーストラリア産L.whitleyiの分類学的位置を検討した結果, 本種はおそらくL.nasusと同一であるとみなした.

A nerve impulse travelling along a crustacean nerve was found to be accompanied by a small, rapid movement of the nerve surface.The movement was 10-20nm in amplitude and was concurrent with a rise in the “swelling pressure” of the order of 5mg/cm2 for a nerve bundle.Initiation of an action potential at the site of cathodal polarization was preceded by a small, slow mechanical change in the nerve fiber.Anodal polarization produced a large mechanical change of the opposite sign.Tetrodotoxin and procaine suppressed rapid mechanical changes.

Sustainability is a major challenge in any plant factory, particularly those involving precision agriculture. In this study, an adaptive fertigation system in a three-tier nutrient film technique aquaponic system was developed using a non-destructive vision-based lettuce phenotype (VIPHLET) model integrated with an 18-rule Mamdani fuzzy inference system for nutrient valve control. Four lettuce phenes, that is, fresh weight, chlorophylls a and b, and vitamin C concentrations as outputted by the genetic programming-based VIPHLET model were optimized for each growth stage by injecting NPK nutrients into the mixing tank, as determined based on leaf canopy signatures. This novel adaptive fertigation system resulted in higher nutrient use efficiency (99.678%) and lower chemical waste emission (14.108 mg L-1) than that by manual fertigation (92.468%, 178.88 mg L-1). Overall, it can improve agricultural malpractices in relation to sustainable agriculture.

I have made considerable progress over the last two years. The core project of my research - the translation of Yoshida Saburo's 1938 book - is nearly complete. About 75% of it has been typed, and about the same percentage of the illustrations have been prepared (including the original photographs). However, because it is an extremely complex document - illuminating the life and community of a small-scale subsistence farmer and his family through a sequence of daily entries spanning the period from March of 1935 to March of the following year - there is still much work to do. During the final year, more typing will be done, and the final work on the illustrations and proofreading and editorial adjusting will be completed. Also during the final year, a publisher will be sought for the English language version.

対面する虚偽報告者(Liar)と虚偽検出者(Detector)の脳活動の同期(coupling)現象を、近赤外分光法(NIRS)を用いて検討した。Liarは、単独で視覚呈示された単文を「音読」するか、あるいは単文内容を右手の「動作」で表現することを求められ、次に実施行動(音読、動作)の再認検査を受けた。最後にLiarは対面状況下で、各単文に付与される命令語(真実・虚偽)に応じた実施行動をキー押し判断し、直後に口頭で「音読」または「動作」しましたと報告した。例えば、ある単文に「動作」を行い、「虚偽」命令を受けると、Liarは「音読しました」と虚偽を報告した。DetectorはLiarの報告に対する真偽判断の直後に各判断の正誤を知らされた。Detectorの虚偽検出(正答)率は約50%であった。両者のNIRSデータは、Detectorの正答反応試行でのみ、右IFGで正の脳間相関を示した。

体外受精水牛胚の低受胎率の原因究明のために、分割初期胚における染色体異常の出現率を明らかにした。フィリピン、インドのと場入手の河川型水牛卵巣の直径2-8mm卵胞から卵子を吸引採取、23-24時間成熟培養し、河川型水牛の凍結精子を最終濃度1×10(6)sperm/mlで媒精した。媒精12-18時間後に体外培養用培地へ移し36-40時間卵丘細胞と共培養し、2-8細胞期胚を100ng/mlのビンブラスチンで6-10時間処理した後、吉澤ら(1998)のウシ体外受精胚の方法に準じて染色体標本を作製した。206個の胚の51.0%(105/206)が中期像を有し、87.6%(92/105)で分析可能であり、染色体異常の出現率は47.8%(44/92)で、多倍数体は23.9%(22/92)、混倍数体と半数体は各12%(11/92)であり、多倍数体や混倍数体は多精子侵入が原因と考えられた。

<p><u>Background</u></p><p>Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, is the largest cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. CVD is intrinsically linked to hemostasis and thrombosis and, therefore, platelet reactivity. As such, secondary prevention of CVD usually includes inhibitors of platelet function. Though the majority of CVD patients are over the age of 65, large healthy population studies of platelet reactivity have been performed in younger (<40) volunteers. The Bruneck Study is unique in that all participants are over the age of 65. Therefore, the aim of this study was to phenotype platelet reactivity in this elderly population.</p><p><u>Methods</u></p><p>Fasting blood was taken from 338 people into citrate (0.105M) anti-coagulant and platelet rich (PRP) and poor (PPP) plasma was obtained by centrifugation. All experiments were performed within 2 hours of blood draw. Traditional light transmission aggregometry (LTA) in response to arachidonic acid (AA), ADP, collagen, TRAP-6 amide and U46619 was performed. In addition, platelet aggregometry was also assessed using the Optimul plate-based method in response to AA (0.3-1.5mM), ADP (1-30µM), collagen (0.4-30µg/ml), epinephrine (0.6-10µM), ristocetin (0.1-1.5mg/ml), TRAP-6 (0.1-25µM) and U46619 (0.01-10µM). % aggregation was calculated and data were analysed using R with the nlpr package and GraphPad Prism. Data is reported as mean±sem.</p><p><u>Results</u></p><p>The cohort was evenly split between sex (49% female) with a mean age of 76.1±7.1 years. There was a low incidence of MI (4.7%), stoke (6.5%) and diabetes (6.2%). Concentration-response curves for Optimul aggregometry were generated and final % aggregation was compared to LTA (LTA vs Optimul, respectively): AA 1mM (29±2% vs 68±2%), ADP 5µM (54±1% vs 77±1%), ADP 20µM (59±1% vs 80±1%), collagen 0.4µg/ml (34±1% vs 76±1.2%), 4µg/ml (59±1% vs 81±1%), 10µg/ml (58±1% vs 80±1%), TRAP-6 25µM (62±1% vs 87±1%), U46619 10µM (63±1% vs 84±1%).</p><p><u>Conclusions</u></p><p>This is the first extensive platelet reactivity using multiple concentrations of a broad range of agonists in a large, healthy, elderly population. Subgroup analyses will allow us to determine whether there are any associations with platelet reactivity, age, and cardiovascular disease.</p>
