The main subject of this study is to show that it is possible to assume an intimate relationship between Joseph Butler(1692-1752)and Adam Smith(1723-1790)through comparative analysis of their arguments concerning self-deceit.The relationship between Butler and Smith is a subject which has been relatively disregarded in relevant literature. Although scholars have observed similarity between them in respect of conscience, there are little research conducted on this subject. Focusing on self-deceit, the present study demonstrates that sufficient evidence exists to assume a more intimate relationship between Butler and Smith than has been considered.

This paper proposes that the Anglican belief which Edmund Burke explains and vindicates in Reflections on the Revolution in France consists of two principles based on the religious ‘instruction’ and ‘consolation’, whose ideas can be found in his ecclesiology. One principle obliges man or woman to perform their role appointed by their nature. The performance is facilitated by the fear that they would be punished in the future state unless they played their role. The other one commands them to improve their nature whose perfection is achieved by imitating God's perfections. The improvement of their nature is motivated by the hope that its perfection will lead them to their salvation.

This paper proposes that the English conformist views of the nature of episcopacy is best indicated by focusing on their differing interpretation of Jeromeʼs two specific writings. Previous literature assumed a hardening case of jure divino argument and fell short of establishing an adequate method of comparing the conformist opinions of episcopacy. Providing a better frame of comparison, it is demonstrated that there were three types of conformist responses and that the typology did not become starker in a chronological manner.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between moral sense theory and utilitarianism in Francis Hutcheson's moral philosophy.It has been argued by some scholars that Hutcheson treated moral sense and utilitarianism as different and separated principles by which we make moral judgements, which sometimes leads to insistence that there is an inconsistency in his moral theory. This paper points out some problems with this kind of interpretation and illustrates how Hutcheson's utilitarianism is derived from the moral sense theory through textual analysis.

It is only recently that Locke scholars have begun to pay attention to his translation of Jansenist Pierre Nicoleʼs Essais de morale in relation to Locke's application of hedonism and other related topics. This paper attempts to elucidate Nicole's influence on Locke's moral thoughts, and Locke's innovative adaptation of Nicole's arguments about what human weakness means in moral life that inspired a comparatively more forgiving evaluation of human reason, self-love, and moral virtue in his later years. His interpretation and adaptation of Nicole's moral thoughts allowed him to reconcile human nature with a prospect for human perfection through the improvement of hedonically motivated action and the contractual nature of society itself. One can trace the development of Locke's moral thought process during his translation of Nicole's work, and witness the taking shape of some of the most important insights and arguments that would become fully developed in his major works, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Two Treatises of Government in the later years.
