We examined the effect of discount rate presentation (e.g. 40% off) on the consumers' decision making process using eye movement equipment. Ten female participants (average age: 48.4 years old) were asked to choose between two options. The discount rate of option one was higher than that of option two, although total price of option one was higher than that of option two. All eye movements were recorded during experiment in order to examine participants' decision making process. To recheck this finding, we conducted a control experiment without discount rates. The result of the control experiment suggested that the presentation of discount rate influenced the participants' decision strategy.

This paper describes effect for human feelings by using a swing chair synchronized with moving pictures. The relations between human KANSEI and swing angles, pitching and rolling, were examined by using the swing chair and the moving pictures. The 12 KANSEI factors were measured under the conditions of various swing parameters: swing frequency, swing angle of swing chair, and swing angle of screen image. Feelings of powerful and interest were increased as the swing angle and the swing frequency of the swing chair become higher. Furthermore, by adding smaller swing angle of the swing chair, the powerful and the interest feelings were increased.

When we make an innovation, we have to modify a philosophical view of the world on which our thought and conduct base tacitly. However, we are confronted by two difficulties in order to do such an innovation. The first is an ontological problem that we cannot deal with artifacts, which is an amalgamation of matter and spirit, in the traditional ontology. The second is a logical and epistemological problem that we cannot evaluate a hypothesis making process in the traditional formal logic and the modern epistemology. This paper presents a forecast that a recent philosophical issue ‘Ontology of Artifacts’ would be the key to solve the former and ‘Abduction’ would be the key for the latter. In examining such a forecast, we find that an innovative process in the fashion design provides a notable example. We conclude that those observations and considerations will contribute to establish the Science of Innovation.

We have found that the sense of brilliant observed from an image is deteriorated by a digital processing of granular noise reduction. By seven grade subjective assessment tests about “sense of brilliant” removing and adding isolated impulsive dots, “sense of brilliant” was deteriorated “-2”(reduction) and improved “+1”(addition). We have found the more than 5.4% isolated impulsive dots of total pixel greatly generated “sense of brilliant”.

It is important to clarify the potential users' value system when one designs a new product. In this research, the authors reasoned that it is effective for the users to learn various evaluation standards. The first purpose of this research is to lift the potential users with different knowledge and experience to a level which enables them to evaluate a product appropriately by an on-line questionnaire research method. The second purpose of this research is to explicate the elements of a burial cradle that may heal a grief for stillborn. With two purposes in mind, the authors conducted an on-line questionnaire and analyzed the results. As the results, an on-line questionnaire method has increased user's understanding of the product and its benefits. Therefore this product design method could be a useful tool in a product evaluation and its standardization. It may also allow the researchers to obtain more accurate product evaluation from the subjects.

The purpose of signboard is primarily up to indicate the store or company name of that exists in the location where you want to post it. In addition, other general advertising purposes (companies, products, people of talent, and movies, etc.) can be considered. However, there is a variety of purposes, usual route, display of the evacuation route, etc. (some are also referred to as a guide plate), such as the sign for the warning (including, for example, signs that are used during the road construction). In noticing the existence of such a signboard, under some influence from there depicted designed (including characters and the like), a person is considered to move to a specific action. Therefore, such a series of operations may be regarded as a “stimulus” → “thinking” → “action”. For this reason, signboards can be considered as one system. In this paper, by capturing the environment surrounding the signboard, including the people as one of the system, using the concept of production system, we propose a new point of view and its model to the signboard design. This model is based on the basic idea for a person to design as “intrigued by” the curiosity and interests saw the signboard.

Recently, neuromarketing has attracted attention, in which the customer's response to commodity and advertisement is analyzed from brain activity. In this study, electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded while the commodity characters are presented and the familiarity towards them being evaluated. We analyzed the difference of the EEGs by the responses to the subjects (KNOWN or UNKNOWN). In the analysis of event-related potential (ERP) component P2, we found higher P2 amplitude for KNOWN than UNKNOWN. In addition, cognitive states affected induced gamma band responses (iGBR), KNOWN activated amplitudes in high gamma frequency band. From these results, we suggested that iGBR and P2 reflect cognitive states to the characters as human face familiarity.

In terms of research into chat interfaces, prior research includes studies applicable to the reader's side, aimed at reducing the reader's perceived waiting time. However, this paper focuses on the writer's side. Content from live video seminars typically contains greetings and salutations uttered by participants. These salutations were removed first from the data in order to eliminate noise, before starting the analysis. The sentences within each chat utterance were analyzed, and the results indicate that approximately 90% of those utterances are less than 20 characters long, and approximately 54% of them are less than 10 characters in length. In addition, this research analyzed the structure of the sentences, and the results show that utterances comprising of two or more sentences tend to include questions. However, at the same time, this has also highlighted the issue that these types of sentences tend to hinder synchronization within the webinar.

In this study, I propose that a local event can be considered as a “system for information transmission”. Such a system has three functions, namely, “information”, “production”, and “acceptability”. This study provides a conceptual diagram for depicting a local event as a system for information transmission. Though local events can be classified in different ways, they are represented using a specific image in the conceptual diagram. Furthermore, in order to understand the current local events, I compare these events to those that occurred during the Japanese bubble economy.

In this paper, we describe a new time-sharing, display-based, color-assisted vision system for individuals with color vision problems associated with aging. Most of the proposed type of existing color-assisted vision systems apply to only computer systems or car-navigation systems. Here, we propose a new system that may help even the elderly clearly perceive color signs and indicators. This system has an image-processing unit, a camera and HMD for elderly people which create the enhanced color image. For consistent evaluation and repeatability of experiments, wearing simulated eyeglasses is assumed to be the same as an aged person's vision. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by applying the SD method.

An emotion tagging method using emotion-related words is proposed and applied to access log analysis of news site in this paper. We regard emotion as the feeling which ordinary people have from the viewpoint of a third party. The system tags one of 8 emotions (joy, like, safe, fear, anger, disgust, sad, shame) to one sentence. There are 5 steps in the proposed emotion tagging method. 1) The system tags emotion to the sentence directly which have the emotion-related word in emotion database. 2) The system does morphological analysis for the sentence which can't be tagged emotion in the first step. 3) Searching emotion queries based on emotion-related words are made using emotion database. 4) The system posts the searching emotion queries and each word in the sentence to Mainichi news database and calculates the co-occurrence score. 5) The system changes the score considering the importance of each word. The emotion which has the best co-occurrence score is tagged to the sentence. The experiment result shows that the rate of correctness of the proposed emotion tagging method is about 80%. For emotion based access log analysis, we gathered the access logs of Asahi web news site. The system tags emotion using proposed method to each gathered news headlines. After emotion tagging, the system extracts the emotion based rules from the access logs by counting the frequencies of emotion sequences. As a result of access log analysis we obtained some interesting rules such that users tend to read news which convey positive emotion successively.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the sensitive elements which affects sustainability of NPO Corporation management. We analyzed the data of hearing survey using the text-mining methods, extracted the main elements about “troubles in operation,” “actions for solution,” and “achievements,” and searched for the relevance between the sustainability and the elements. We found that, In addition to the economic challenges, the efforts of training staffs, the scheme of raising name values, and the achievement in improving motivation also have influence on the sustainable development. And we finally got a conclusion that when facing difficulties in management, identifying the problem clearly and trying various measures leads to the improvement of staff motivation. And this process was also the characteristic of sustainable development of NPO Corporation.

Sharing and managing knowledge on human Kansei obtained in several study fields are of growing significance to providing product's values focused on customers. However, few sufficiently-advanced technologies that realize such knowledge sharing and management have been established. One typical approach is to clarify and systematize concepts as an ontology. In the current study, we developed an ontology to describe correspondence of affective meaning spaces analyzed by semantic differential method. First, we collect literatures reveal the affective meaning evaluated through the five senses and their inter-modality. Second, we described the concepts on the basis of an ontology of color emotions. Then, we demonstrated and evaluated the usefulness of the ontology in a design situation. As a result, we confirmed that the ontology will serve as a useful reference and be of assistance to designers.

Various robots had been developed lately, not only for industrial use but for home use too. In our previous study, we had developed a playmate robot system that is designed to play with children. Child personality observation is important during play situations for smooth interaction, in order to sustain the child's interest. Therefore, we considered that the robot system should be able to distinguish children's personality types or tendencies. As a result, the relationship between the child's personality test score and head movement observed during the robot play interaction was found to be significant. This suggests the possibility of an adaptive robot system that plays with children in accordance to each child personality.

According to previous studies, highly understandable painting is generally associated with favorable evaluations. This study investigated the contribution of understandability to the combination effect of painting and frame. Using eight combinations, the degrees of harmony and impression (evaluation, activity) were rated. It was found that when a highly understandable painting was combined with a regular and symmetrical frame, the degree of harmony and evaluation were higher than if the painting was combined with an irregular and complex frame. In contrast, a poorly understandable painting harmonized with both types of frames and their evaluation only slightly differed. The results indicated that the aesthetic appreciation of art is affected by the frame and that a highly understandable painting is harmonized only in a regular and symmetrical frame that does not impinge on the prototypicality of the painting.

Visual attractiveness has significant effects on our social life. People make up one's appearance by clothing, wearing accessories, applying cosmetics, hair-style and hair-color, etc., to convey certain impressions including attractiveness to others. In this study, we examined (a) how the suitability between face and hair color (i.e., hair-color matching) would be evaluated by oneself and by others and (b) how the hair-color matching would interact with perceived attractiveness. We found that 1) different criteria were used for hair-color matching between self-evaluation and evaluation by others, and 2) a wider range of hair-colors matched to the face, when the face was evaluated as more attractive and/or the perceived facial makeup was more. These results suggest that the evaluation of hair-color suitability might differ in self-evaluation and in evaluation by others, and suitability of hair-color has a certain interaction with perceived facial attractiveness. Possible implications are also discussed.

Families of t-norm based histogram intersections and a corresponding content-based image retrieval system are proposed. It is shown that the retrieval performance varies depending on the semantic category of the image and the usage of different t-norms results in a performance increase. Computational costs are determined as both the complexity and the average of 106 calculation times needed to calculate each similarity on a personal computer. To evaluate retrieval performance, precision and recall on the Corel image databases are determined, and Friedman test and Scheffe′s method are used to find difference between similarity measures. The results suggest that the proposals have the best average Friedman ranks in some categories (implying improved precision) having only 125 ms overhead when compared to the basic histogram intersection. Due to observed performance of families of t-norm based histogram intersection, system performing boosting of such norms could increase the overall accuracy in content-based image retrieval.

This paper relates audio features based on fluctuation of music with sensibility evaluation about music as a component technology for an automatic song select system demanded on human sensibility evaluation. When people listen to music, they select a song considering both their own feelings at the time and sensibility evaluation about the song. We consider that sensibility evaluations of songs are influenced by the features based on fluctuation about both volume and pitch of the songs. Thus, we focus on features of fluctuation that contain a dynamic idea on music, and extract thirty six features of fluctuation about both volume and pitch from each songs using Fast Fourier Transform. On the other, we prepare a subjective experiment for plural songs using Semantic Differential method, and obtain the sensibility evaluation about each song. Then, we study the relationships between extracted features and sensibility evaluation about the songs with multiple discriminant analysis. As a result, high accurate discriminant hit-rates and low discriminant error are shown, therefore we suggest that audio features based on fluctuation of songs influence sensibility evaluation about the songs. Furthermore, we confirm the especial parameters related with sensibility evaluation about music while considering canonical variates which construct discriminant spaces.

This paper is an attempt to describe the causality phenomenon of “Kansei Information” and its affect on buying behavior. We are focusing on information taken in through the five senses and processed within the brain, causing a positive affect, and we refer to this as “Kansei Information”. And since the year 2000, throughout Japan, in various different industries, we have been researching the phenomenon of “Kansei Information” and its affect on buying behavior. Based on our observations of this phenomenon and the marketing and sales activity it results in, we are researching possibility to make a model that relies on the affects of “Kansei Information” as the main component. In this paper we present “Kansei information/Buying behavior model”. And we examine this model by focusing on non-planning purchases in the supermarket. We will also present experiment of actual store fronts which are actually using “Kansei Information” to affect buying behavior. In this case the sales of the product, which had been around 20 pieces a month in previous years, dramatically improved and reached 280 pieces in the first month. Six months afterwards, grew constantly to reach 1,000 pieces a month. And, we examine the possibility of making the simulation model based on this outcome of an experiment.
