The Canadian Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) that consists of 7 joints has been in operation since 2001 aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The extensive operational experience of the Space Shuttle's Remote Manipulator System (SRMS), which has 6 joints, played a significant role in the design and operation of the ISS robotics. However, optimization of the ISS robotics operation for different types of tasks utilizing the unique redundancy characteristics of the 7-joint systems is still underway. In this study, we have proposed three evaluation indices for multi-joint arm configurations in order to avoid collision with surrounding structures. Based on the evaluation of operations of the SSRMS a demonstration model, it has turned out that the proposed indices are beneficial for enhancing clearance monitoring of the arm with respect to the surrounding structures. Furthermore we have proposed an operation support display to contribute to the operational safety and mission success.

It is necessary to develop a small positive pressure control system for the closed ecology experiment facilities because of the needs to prevent contamination from the atmosphere and to protect against over differential pressure loading. In the present study, a numerical analysis method was developed to calculate the quantity of state of the closed module which is fitted with rubber buffers for the small positive pressure control system. Experiments to examine the pressure change of the closed module caused by rapid temperature control of an air conditioner were carried out at Biosphere-J. Comparison of calculated and experimental results showed that the present dynamic simulation is suited to estimating the quantity of state of the closed module.

In this study, new models on the new droplet evaporation taking account of the droplet surface temperature related to the modified Spalding model, on the ambient temperature and the mass fraction at the infinite-point was proposed and incorporated into KIVA-II code. These models were compared and reviewed with the droplet evaporation model of KIVA-II original code in relation to the standard Spalding model. As a results, it is found that the calculated results of droplet evaporation by new model agree well with actual phenomena.

キーボードやマウスといった従来の情報システムの入力あるいはインタフェース機器は, 高齢者および障害を持つ人々にとっては決して扱い易いものとは言えない。それらは逆に情報システムと彼等との間で心理的・物理的に高い障壁となってしまっていることが多い。本研究は, 高齢者や特定の障害を持つ人々にとって他の入力機器よりも遥かに使い易い, タッチモニタ用のソフトウェアキーボードを設計するためのガイドラインの確立を目指すものである。そこで最初に, ユーザ年齢と性別によるタッチモニタ上におけるポインティング動作の動的特性への影響を調べた。主な結果は次の通りである : 1.被験者がタッチモニタ上の比較的近距離による2つの目標の間をポイントする動作を繰り返した時, フィッツの法則(MT=αlog_2D/S+β)はあまり適合せず, むしろ移動時間(MT)は大きさ(S)に対する目標間距離(D)の比率にリニアに増加した(すなわち, MT=αD/S+β)。2.係数αは被験者のうちの高齢者グループと若年者グループでほとんど差が無かった。一方, 切片βはこの2つのグループ間で明らかに差が有った。3.係数α男性よりも女性の方が大きい値となった。さらに, 困難指数(D/S)が小さいとき, 移動時間(MT)はほぼ同じか女性の方が短く, 一方困難指数が大きくなると男性の方が短くなった。

従耒の調帯掛け普通平削盤とワードレオナルド方式高速平削盤との比較切削試験を試み、理論的立場といふよりは寧ろ現場的立場に重点を置き、工場に於て実際に使用し得るに便利な簡易なる切削力測定器を作り、それに依て両者の特異性を明らかにせんとしたものである。この目的のために普通平削盤にはシンシナチ製 20ft ベルト掛け平削盤、高速平削盤にはニイガタ 5D型標準高速平削盤を使用し、同一なる材質、形状及び大きさを有する被切削材を、各機に適應した実用的の切削条件の下に於て比較切削試験を行つたものである。

A centrifugal fan for an inner unit of an air-conditioner was designed using a system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical optimization. Commercial CFD software (STAR-CD) with an in-house automatic grid generator was used. A simulated annealing algorithm for numerical optimization was also used to minimize the noise level and to maximize fan efficiency. The predicted noise level was calculated from the relative velocities obtained by CFD. Calculations show that the optimized fan produced low noise and was more efficient than a conventional fan, demonstrating that the system can be used to design silent and highly efficient fan. A further finding was that there was a correlation between specific noise level and fan efficiency. This correlation shows that it is important for designing the fan to uniform distribution of relative velocity.

Than doing the actual experiment, in order to evaluate the safety of passenger flow and passenger evaluation station, the consideration by the simulation model is realistic. System for safety evaluation of the station in the event of failure by utilizing simulation technology, in this study, we have examined the specifications of sub-models that are required there. In addition, conduct a case study that assumes a situation where using a part of the sub-model for the models studied, underground station is flooded due to the tsunami and heavy rain guerrilla, we have confirmed the effectiveness of the system.

半無限体や厚板などの軸対称弾性問題に有効なハンケル変換をシンプソン積分法により行う場合,積分核として含まれるベッセル関数の振動性のため,精度のよい結果を得ることが困難である.そこで本研究では,フーリエ変換におけるFilonの方法にならい,被変換関数&fnaf;(x),またはx&fnaf;(x)を区分的に二次関数で近似し,これにベッセル関数を乗じた積分値をロンメル関数で表わして値を求める方法を提案する.また,二つの例題により本方法の有効性を示す.

In this paper, a diagnosis method for machine faults using a neural network based on autocorrelation coefficients of wavelet transformed signals is presented. It is important for factory engineers to accurately estimate machine faults. In conventional diagnosis methods, frequency analysis using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) has often been employed. Recently, wavelet transforms have been studied and applied to many signal-processing applications. Wavelet transforms are very useful because of characteristics of time-frequency analysis. In this paper, we propose an application of wavelet transforms to machine fault diagnosis. In order to apply wavelet transforms to machine fault diagnosis, we use autocorrelation coefficients of the wavelet transformed signal. In this research, it becomes clear that the autocorrelation coefficients, represent the different classes of machine states. For the automatic diagnosis, we trained a neural network to recognize three classes of machine states based on the autocorrelation coefficients of wavelet transformed signals. Simulation and experimental results show that the trained neural network could successfully estimate machine faults.

This paper describes the evaluation of adhesion strength between the amorphous Silicon carbide (a-SiC) thin film, Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC)/a-SiC laminated thin film and materials used for the cutting tool. The a-SiC and DLC/a-SiC thin films were deposited on the tungsten carbide steel substrate:K10 and on the high speed steel substrate;SKH51 by Plasma-Enhanced CVD method of the hot cathode PIG discharge type. Scratch tests were carried out for examining the critical fracture load of the films. Finite Element Method (FEM) analyses were also performed to clarify the stress distribution at the interface between the films and substrates. The stress intensity factors K<SUB>I</SUB> and K<SUB>II</SUB>and the fracture toughness K<SUB>C</SUB> were calculated from results of scratch tests and FEM analyses. The K<SUB>I</SUB>, K<SUB>II</SUB>and K<SUB>C</SUB> of a-SiC and DLC/a-SiC thin films deposited on the K10 substrate were larger than those of the thin films deposited on the SKH51 substrate. The K<SUB>I</SUB>, K<SUB>II</SUB> and K<SUB>C</SUB> of both of the films were directly proportional to the density of a-SiC thin films. In turning experiments, the delamination area of DLC/a-SiC thin films deposited on the cutting tool of K10 is closely related to the K<SUB>C</SUB> obtained from the scratch tests and FEM analyses.

This paper describes the microstructural effect of Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) thin film on micro-tribological properties. DLC thin films with density of 1.9-2.4 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP> were deposited on Silicon (111) surface by Plasma-Enhanced CVD method of the hot cathode PIG discharge type. The effect of deposition conditions on the microstructure of DLC thin film was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. Increasing the bias voltage and the discharge current shifted the peak of the G-band shift toward high frequency and enlarged I (D)/I (G) ratio. Pin-on-Plate friction experiments were carried out using a diamond pin in high vacuum. The friction coefficients of DLC thin films indicated constant values during the friction. The friction coefficients increased with shifting G-band toward low frequency in the range above 1540 cm<SUP>-1</SUP>, but those did not vary with increasing I (D)/I (G). The friction coefficients were directly proportional to density of the film. Molecular orbital calculations revealed that the adhesion energy on the sp<SUP>3</SUP> bonding atom cluster was higher than that on the sp<SUP>2</SUP> bonding atom cluster.

This paper describes the effect of density of Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) thin film on tribological property. DLC thin films having the density of 1.9-2.5 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP> were prepared on (111) of Silicon surface by the hot cathode PIG Discharge Type Plasma-Enhanced CVD method. Ball on disk friction experiments were carried out using diamond ball. The friction coefficients increased from 0.05 to 0.20 with increasing film density in the density range below 2.185 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP>, but those did not change above 2.185 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP>. The specific wear value also increased with increasing film density. The effect of film density on tribological property between DLC thin film and diamond pin was examined by molecular dynamics simulation. The diamond pin slides to uniaxial direction on DLC thin film having the density 1.5-3.0 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP>. Atoms of DLC thin film having the density of 1.5 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP> were moved most actively. Atomic movement being like to shear deformation was observed during frictional processes. The effect of film density on friction coefficients in MD simulations was similar to that in experiments qualitatively.

The surface refining method is a useful technique to improve the fatigue limit of gears. One of the methods is the Carburizing Method. To increase the fatigue limit of the Carburized gears, the following five techniques need to be developed:a)Reduce abnormal surface structure. b)Obtain a fine grain size. c) Decrease the retained Austenitic structure. d)Increase hardness under the surface. e)Improve the residual stress distribution under the surface. For this purpose, the authors conducted a study by using DSG1 steel gears on the new compound surface refining method consisting of Vacuum Carburizing, Contour Induction Hardening and Double Shot Peening. The results showed that the fatigue limit of the gears processed by the new compound surface refining method achieved 125% better than that of the conventional Vacuum Carburized gears.

Mode I fracture behavior of rubber toughened PMMA (RTPMMA) was studied over five decades of displacement rates (10<SUP>-4</SUP>-13 m/s) using a high-speed tensile testing machine. Two kinds of RTPMMA, extruded RTPMMA containing 20 wt.% rubber particles (EM20) and pressed RTPMMA containing 40 wt.% rubber particles (PM40), exhibited different rate dependences of the maximum stress intensity factor K<SUB>1max</SUB> and the maximum energy release rate G<SUB>1max</SUB>. K<SUB>1max</SUB> and G<SUB>1max</SUB> of EM20 decreased rapidly at high rates (1-11 m/s). This suggests that the toughening effect due to rubber blending was dramatically reduced at the high rates. On the other hand, PM40 maintained high K<SUB>1max</SUB> and G<SUB>1max</SUB> values at all rates tested in this study. Thus, PM40 maintained the toughening effect even at high rates up to 13 m/s. For comparison, unmodified PMMA was also examined, and the results showed that K<SUB>1max</SUB>of neat PMMA increased with the increase in displacement rates and G<SUB>1max</SUB> remained constant as the rate increased. Discussion is given on the rate-dependent K<SUB>1max</SUB> and G<SUB>1max</SUB> values, taking (K<SUB>1max</SUB>)<SUP>2</SUP>/G<SUB>1max</SUB>into account. The fracture surface morphology of the specimens is also discussed.

A Soka University pico-satellite "Negai" measures mere 10cm cube and weights just one kilogram. Its orbit is 300km with inclination of 30 degrees. In 30 days or so after launch it will be dragged by the air and it is burnt out to become a manmade shooting star when reentering to the atmosphere. People believe wishing upon a shooting star makes their dreams come true. The main mission is to carry children's dreams recruited from the public microfilmed to be loaded on the satellite. Hence it is called "Negai" or "Wish." The technical mission is to space prove the high functional information system with inside triple-redundant fault-tolerant soft-core CPU embedded in an FPGA and reliable picture transmission system. This paper emphasized on the technical mission as well as how we operated so short mission life operation with 30 degrees inclination.
