Interest in learning has an important role in learning context. Recent research on interest focuses not only to how much interest there is but also on the extent that the interest develops. The less-developed and well-developed interests are established in different ways and have different functions. However, a unidimensional model proposed in previous studies does not clearly capture the differences in the development of these interests. This article proposes a model that identifies the level of development of interest based on three elements: continuity, inherence, and value. These three elements define the development of interest more clearly and make it possible to describe different psychological states of interest. Using this model, previous studies were reviewed and analyzed in an integrated manner. Finally, we discuss future research on both interest and insight for educational practice.

In various social situations such as elections or shopping, individuals are often persuaded in multiple directions by different sources (i.e., multiple-source-and-direction persuasion). In this paper, we discussed the attitude change process in this type of situation, based on two dual-process models of persuasion: (1) the heuristic-systematic model and (2) the elaboration likelihood model. These models assume single-source-and-direction persuasion and cannot be applied without modification to multiple-source-and-direction persuasion. Therefore, this paper focuses on the simultaneous consideration of multiple persuasive messages as a process particular to this situation. In addition, by using a concrete experimental design, we demonstrated in this paper how a hypothesized model accounts for a recipient’s attitude change. We emphasized the significance and the future prospects of clarifying the attitude change process in multiple-source-and-direction persuasion.

The purposes of this paper are 1) to introduce the methods for determining sex/gender differences from the perspective of behavioral genetics, 2) to review the sex/gender differences in various psychological traits found by these approaches, and 3) to propose directions for psychological gender research using behavioral genetics. While behavioral genetics always focuses on individual gender differences, using sex/gender limitation analysis, such studies can focus on both quantitative and qualitative factors affected by sex/gender differences. By integrated the findings derived from behavioral genetics, gender studies can determine how the environment influences genetic factors, and can describe the developmental trajectories of genetic and environmental factors related to gender.

In the last decade, psychology faced a serious crisis, called the reproducibility problem. To solve the problem, several methodological and institutional changes have been proposed and implemented such as the promotion of replication studies and publication of negative results, the introduction of a preregistration system in academic journals, and the implementation of novel statistical methods for suppressing false-positive results. In this paper, based on a previously proposed formal model of population dynamics of scientific discovery, I first explain that these changes are insufficient for avoiding the reproducibility problem. Based on two examples in social psychology, I also discuss that what is necessary for fundamental reformulation of psychology is rigorous modeling, which has already been widely applied in many scientific fields outside psychology.

Humans have developed advanced civilizations by “using” thought. However, it is also true that they are ridden by thinking and suffer because of it. Patients who have depression are an example in humans of being “used” by thought. The aim of this paper was to investigate people’s wisdom to involve thoughts that are causing such pathological conditions. First, I review the research on thought in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which includes a pathological model showing that a person’s thoughts about an event cause pathological consequences. I then introduce the therapeutic approach toward them. Second, I investigate how mindfulness-based CBTs, which are often called “the third generation” of CBT, changed the treatment of thought in CBT. Third, I introduce the understanding and the treatment of thought in Buddhism, which is the origin of mindfulness. The basic principles of Buddhism are primarily introduced because it is essential to understand the basic idea of Buddhism. Finally, we examine the relationship between humans and thought.

In this paper, I focused on stereotype suppression strategies to prevent stereotypic responses because these strategies are commonly used in the context of person perception. Suppressing stereotypic thoughts ironically increases stereotypic accessibility and use (i.e., the rebound effect). First, I described the position of stereotype suppression in stereotype research. Second, I considered the strategies for stereotype suppression without a rebound effect. The study of stereotype suppression has been developed based on the mechanism of thought suppression. However, in this article, I suggest that some effective strategies used in thought suppression cannot be applied to stereotype suppression. Stereotypes are suppressed in the context of person perception; therefore, I reviewed past findings with regard to replacement thoughts and propose effective strategies for stereotype suppression. It is necessary to integrate theory and findings of related area for developing the research of stereotype suppression.

Due to the recent “reproducibility crisis”, the methodology of psychology has been changing. In this situation, the statistical education for undergraduate students majoring in psychology should also be changed. Statistical hypothesis testing and p-values have been the main topics in conventional statistics classes for psychology students. However, it has been pointed out that the emphasis on p-values has lowered the reproducibility of science, including psychology. In this paper, I propose that a main theme of statistics classes for psychology students should be shifted from statistical hypothesis testing to the concept of statistical modelling. Understanding the concept fitting probability distribution to data is a fundamental concept of inferential statistics. This idea will facilitate students’ understanding of some different statistical approaches. It will also be important to teach the students to refrain from making a dichotomous decision based upon a single index.

Since the 1940s, response shaping, also called “shaping of a new operant response,” has been a central issue in behavior analysis. However, most studies have been reports on the artistic practice of response shaping, and limited experimental analysis has been conducted on its control variables. The purpose of this study was to summarize the current status of the scientific research on response shaping and to explore its future prospects. After defining it and summarizing its historical background, studies were reviewed on its success or failure and the experimental analysis of its control variables. Three directions were suggested for the future: standardization of the experimental methods, introduction of an automatic measurement technology of response topography, and a steady experimental analysis of its control variables. The conceptual significance of response shaping is discussed with regard to its current position in modern psychology.

The ‘we-mode’ is defined as an irreducibly collective mode that enables interacting agents to share minds by representing their contributions to a joint action as contributions to something that they are going to pursue together (Gallotti and Frith, 2013, Trends in Cognitive Science, 17, 160–165). This paper reviews the current empirical findings on joint actions upon which the concept ‘we-mode’ relies heavily. Previous investigations on joint actions have demonstrated that sharing task representations allows individuals to predict and monitor their own actions and those of their partners, as well as their combined action outcomes. It has also been shown that performing actions together allows individuals to spontaneously adopt their partner’s level-2 visual and visuospatial perspective. The implications of these findings for research on the we-mode are discussed.

This study investigated the concept of wisdom as expertise in solving life problems based on an accumulation of life experience. We reviewed and defined the notion of wisdom as practical knowledge and skills, which have developed in the work place. We developed the Wisdom Knowledge Scale (WKS) based on the Berlin Wisdom Paradigm (Baltes & Smith, 2008), and checked the reliability and validity using four measures of wisdom: the Self-Assessed Wisdom Scale (SAWS; Webster, 2007), the Three-Dimensional Wisdom Scale (3D-WS; Ardelt, 2003), the Adult Self-Transcendence Inventory (ASTI; Levenson et al., 2005), and Brief Wisdom Screening Scale (BWSS; Glück, et al., 2013). Based on three survey data (Ns=1074, 997, 1000), participants’ scores on the Wisdom Knowledge Scale increased with age. Structural equation modeling showed that (a) years of education and work experience affected critical thinking attitude and practical knowledge, (b) critical thinking attitude and practical knowledge affected the Wisdom Knowledge score, (c) curiosity and grit affected the Wisdom Knowledge score, and (d) the Wisdom Knowledge score affected happiness. We discuss possibilities for future research on wisdom as expert knowledge using cross cultural, developmental, and interventional approaches.
