The purpose of this paper is to consider the establishment and influences of the "Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System(= MCAS test)", which has been used state-wide in Massachusetts public schools since 1998. In Massachusetts, there are still many unresolved arguments about the state examination administration beyond the issue of the MCAS test itself. This article will study the actual conditions of educational assessment administration in Massachusetts, and will verify how the MCAS is not only used as a competency test, but as also an instrument of educational reform. The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 promised improved schools that would fully develop the talents and skills of every child in the commonwealth. The MCAS test that has been in use since 1998 was to measure student understanding of the learning under the state standard curriculum framework and was to measure the achievement of students, schools and districts at grades four, eight, and ten in the core subjects of mathematics, science & technology, history and social science, English / language arts and eventually a foreign language. The MCAS test is evaluated as a just tool of new reforms of assessment and evaluation in Massachusetts. After all, the aim of the Massachusetts Education Reform Act is to evaluate not only on students' learning abilities and teachers' teaching skills, but also on a clear ranking of schools and school districts by a high - stakes test. Most important point in the Massachusetts educational reform was how to combine such a highly individualized assessment test with the state curriculum standards that have been under development since 1993. In conclusion, an assessment of individual student, school and district is considered as an important tool of educational reform in Massachusetts. Many politicians and educators are thinking the MCAS test as a panacea for educational reform. However, we should understand that there are many serious problems in the MCAS test. The educational assessment administration in Massachusetts is now a typical example of educational reform in the United States.

生細胞の細胞質は細胞の形とその運動性を司っている細胞骨格繊維のネットワークで満たされている.細胞骨格ネットワークのダイナミクスと不均一性は最近可視化されているが,生細胞の細胞質への接近の難しさからその物理的な性質の測定には難しい点がある,そこで,小粒子のブラウン運動の観察からその周囲の力学的環境を調べることができるという簡単な観察をもとに,マイクロレオロジーという新規の方法が考案され,生細胞への応用にも成功している.本稿では,このマイクロレオロジー法の最近の進歩を紹介し,この方法が生物学における細胞より下のレベルでの諸過程の理解にどのように役立つかについて述べる.

Oscillatory synchronized activities are generated among visual neurons in a manner that depends on certain key features of light stimulation. Although these activities are assumed to play an important role in perceptual integration, their functional significance has yet to be elucidated. We performed behavioral tests and multi-electrode recordings from retinas isolated from the frog. Pharmacological manipulation of the oscillatory synchronized activities in a class of retinal ganglion cells (dimming detectors) induced correlated changes in escape behavior. The retinal oscillatory synchronized activities are likely to encode escape-related information in frogs.

本書は、漢字と仮名とを日用の具とするなかで、うみはぐくんだ論である。読後、その感をふかくする。表語文字と表音文字とが知識にとどまる水準では、なかなかになしとげられなかったであろう。それが本書の存在意義である。初版刊行後一年余にして在庫がつきた由であり、おおかたの賛仰をえたと推測する。私は、しかし、著者のよい読者ではない。著者の主知的な論理には、いつも首をうなだれるしかなく、私はずぼらにいきるさと身をひくばかりである。本書もしかりであった。なにか得心がゆかないまま、世のながれにのることができない、そういう読者が片隅にのこっていると呟くことが、この文章の目的である。書評は、対象が読みたくなるように記すべきであるであろうが、この文章はそうなっていない。諸賢の寛恕をこいたい。

「並列ネットワークサーバComet」のアーキテクチャを述べ、Cometによる並列分散システムの構築および分散型インターネットルータへの応用について検討する。CometはPCIバスをもつ計算機にCometネットワークアダプタを搭載したもので、ネットワークアダプタにハードウェアサポートによる高速プロトコル処理機能をもたせることにより、Gigabitレベルのアプリケーションネットワーク性能やアダプタ内でのパケットフォワーディング機能を実現する。すでにCometネットワークアダプタの試作を完了し、広域のCometネットワークサーバ実験システムの構築を終わって、IEEE1394overIPを用いた実験評価を行っている。

The authors developed a robotic fish that swim with fins that apply flexible oscillating fin technology. The Carp Robot, whose artificial appearance was created through three-dimensional CAD processing of numerical data for the outer shape of living carp sampled through three-dimensional laser digitizing. Although this robotic fish was developed for the amusement field, it is thought to contain key technologies for the development of work robots in the future. For example, "mechatronics" technology involving center-of-gravity shifts, FM radio wave technology for navigation, CCD image data transfer technology for observation, and other technologies were applied to the robotic fish. In this report this robotic fish will be used as examples to explain these development achievements.

現在、情報の電子化が進んでいることは周知の事実である。こういった電子情報は、非電子情報に比べ、情報の収集、検索や統合などが容易となるため、蓄積情報に対する配慮がより重要となっている。こういった中、貸し出しサービス(図書館、レンタルビデオ、借金など)は情報の電子化が非常に進んでいるサービスの一つである。また、貸し出しサービスにおける情報は、個人の趣味指向だけではなく、生活レベルさえも推測できるような情報を含んでいる。つまり、貸し出しサービスの情報の管理者は貸し出し情報を手にいれることができるだけでなく、各個人の個人的な情報を手にいれることもできる。また、情報が全て電子化されているため一度上記の情報がユーザの意図に反して貸出機関から流出してしまうと、電子情報の持つ特徴により、サービス利用者に関連する他の情報との統合が進む可能性が高く、このような電子化された情報が持つプライバシ問題は大きい。こういった問題を解決するため、"匿名貸し出し"を提案する。この"匿名貸し出し"は、貸し出しの際には匿名で貸し出し、返却期限を過ぎても未返却だった場合にはその匿名性を破るようなシステムである。この論文では、貸し出し機関が匿名で貸していた場合でもユーザ一人当たりの権利の数を制限することができ、(つまり図書館であれば何冊貸しているかを制限できること)しかも、ユーザのプライバシは保たれるような新しいシステムを提案し、耐タンパーデバイスおよびオフライン電子マネー方式を利用してこれを実現した。

WWWシステムを単なる情報伝達の手段としてだけでなく,電子商取引システムのようにビジネスに活用しようという動きが顕著である.電子商取引システムでは,様々なマークが利用されている.販売者のWebページ上に,決済方法に関する情報として,利用可能なクレジットカード会社のロゴマークが貼付されているのはその一例である.しかし,従来のマークは単なる画像データなので,偽造や改ざん,不正コピーなどが容易にできてしまう.そこで,本稿では,販売者のWebページを閲覧する消費者が,当該Webサイトの真正性を確認可能とするインターネット・マークを提案する.インターネット・マークでは,Webページを構成するコンテンツや,そのWebページを公開するURL,IPアドレスなどといった複数の情報に対して,ディジタル署名を施し,その結果をマークに透かし込む.ブラウザを使ってWebページを閲覧した消費者は,当該Webページに貼付されたインターネット・マークに透かし込まれている埋め込み情報を抽出し,現在閲覧しているWebページのコンテンツ,URL,IPアドレスなどと比較・検証することで,不正の有無を確認することができる.実際にプロトタイプシステムを開発して評価を行い,インターネット・マークの有用性を確認した.Recently, various values visual marks are effectively used in business applications. For example, in many Web pages different credit card company's logo are attached as a source for payment information. In this case, one glance at these logos will make the customer able to recognize automatically the payment method. However, these marks are easy to forge, tamper with and copy into unauthorized Web site because they are only graphic data. And no method is offered to consumers to confirm the authenticity of logo marks. This insecurity causes serious problems with business application. To resolve these problems, in this paper, we propose Internet-Marks; reliable visual marks for the Web site authentication. Internet-Marks enables to detect illegal acts by the combination of traditional digital signature and digital watermarking techniques.

73歳,肝硬変女性例。肝性脳症に対するアミノ酸輸液製剤投与後,低血糖発作が頻発。さらに手袋靴下型の四肢しびれが急速に出現した。神経学的に両下肢筋力低下,四肢遠位部の全感覚鈍麻,また深部反射の低下が認められ,末梢神経伝導速度は遅延していた。本例にみられた末梢神経障害は,他に明らかな原因が認められないことから,低血糖が原因と推測した。さらに低血糖はアミノ酸製剤により生じたものと考えられた。
