A nighttime nap is expected to mitigate melatonin suppression during night work by blocking light input to the retina, but it is unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of a nap break on melatonin level, subjective sleepiness, and vigilance performance during simulated night work. Eleven healthy young males (mean ± SD age: 22.2 ± 4.1 years) participated in counterbalanced crossover design experiments with two conditions (nap vs. no nap). The subjects performed 12-hour simulated night work from 21:00 to 09:00 h (illuminance: ~500 lx). Subjects with a nap condition took a nap for 2 hours in a dark room from 03:00, while subjects with a no nap condition continued the simulated night work. The results showed that immediately after the 2-h nap break, the melatonin level at 05:00 h temporarily recovered from light-induced melatonin suppression during the simulated night work but significantly suppressed again at 07:00 and 09:00 h. Subjective alertness and vigilance performance were impaired immediately after the nap break but subsequently enhanced. The results suggest that a single nap break for 2 hours could be a strategy to enhance alertness during the last part of night shift but inadequate for mitigating melatonin suppression.

近年,構造物の地震応答に関して,海溝型巨大地震により励起される長周期かつ長継続時間の地震動の与える影響が注目されている.海溝型巨大地震では,数百秒程度の継続時間となることが予測されており,その際,構造物が最大荷重を履歴した後にも数十回~数百回オーダーでの繰り返し振幅を受けると考えられている.一方,鋼製橋脚の耐震設計として実施されてきた繰り返し載荷実験では,主に3回程度の繰り返しを行ってきた.そのため,海溝型巨大地震に対する鋼製橋脚の耐震設計に関しては,十分に解明されていないのが現状である.そこで本研究では,海溝型巨大地震のような継続時間の長い地震動を受ける既設高架橋の耐震性能を把握することを目的として,都市高架橋に多用されている単柱式鋼製橋脚を検討対象とし,数十回オーダーの繰り返し振幅が構造物の耐荷性能に与える影響について検討を行った.

東北地方太平洋沖地震およびそれ以前72時間の地震の緯度・経度・マグニチュードデータの解析を例に取り,方向統計学の利用について述べる.緯度・経度データから生成される角度データに対して,累積和プロット,累積平均方向プロット,ランク累積和プロットを用いて変化点の検出を試み,検定による変化点の検出と比較する.また,角度データについてJones-Pewsey の分布をフルモデルとし,ハート型,von Mises,巻き込みCauchyの各分布をサブモデルとしたときのモデル選択と分布の適合を議論する.マグニチュードデータについては指数分布を特別な場合として含む分布の利用を提案し,分布の適合を検討する.マグニチュードと角度の結合分布としてシリンダー上の分布について考察し,データへの分布の当てはめを行う.さらに,ディスク上の修正Möbius分布の適用可能性について議論する.

原発政策をめぐっては、巨大な影響を持つだけに様々な形の決定方法が模索されている。本稿ではカリフォルニア州で1976年に成立した「ウォーレン・アルキスト法修正条項」(通称“原子力安全法”)を取り上げ、日本の原発政策とは異なる意志決定過程を分析する。この条項は原発の新規建設を事実上不可能にすることでアメリカの原発政策におけるマイルストーンとなったものである。条項の成立の背景には「イニシアティブ」制度を利用した市民の側の法案提出の運動があった。州法政策決定に関わる複数のアリーナ(主張が公になされる場)に焦点を当てて原発がイッシューとして登場する時点から立法的措置がなされるまでを分析し、アリーナ間の相互作用と日本にはない「イニシアティブ」という公共アリーナの果たす機能について考察する。

A mixed reality amusement system employing foot interface, "Fantastic Phantom Slipper", has been developed. The system includes slipper-like wearable devices, optical motion capture and a hemispherical floor screen with a video projector. Phantom sensation is elicited by vibrators in the soles of the slippers to transmit information from floor. Most important concept of this work is to experience cyber worlds through human actions and sensations intuitively. With this system, players can enjoy walking into, and feel cyber worlds with their own feel as they do in real worlds. In this paper, the concept of this work, system configuration, amusement content and players' reactions are described.
