This study investigates the flexural properties, Knoop hardness number (KHN), and wear behavior of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin blocks and compares these values with those of conventional resin composites for direct restoration (RCDs). Four CAD/CAM resin blocks and two RCDs are compared. Ten specimens per material are used to obtain the flexural properties according to ISO 6872 specifications, and five specimens per material are used for KHN measurement. For sliding impact wear testing, twelve specimens are prepared. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (LSM) is used to determine maximum facet depth and volume loss. Polished material surfaces and worn surfaces after wear testing are observed using scanning electron microscopy and LSM. While measured flexural properties and KHN are found to be material-dependent, CAD/CAM resin blocks exhibit higher wear resistance than RCDs. CAD/CAM resin blocks polymerized at high-pressure and high-temperature are found to exhibit wear behaviors far superior to those of RCDs.

Soil respiration (Rs) is the largest flux of carbon dioxide (CO2) next to photosynthesis in terrestrial ecosystems. With the absorption of atmospheric methane (CH4), upland soils become a large CO2 source and CH4 sink. These soil carbon (C) fluxes are key factors in the mitigation and adaption of future climate change. The Asian region spans an extensive area from the northern boreal to tropical regions in Southeast Asia. As this region is characterised by highly diverse ecosystems, it is expected to experience the strong impact of ecosystem responses to global climate change. For the past two decades, researchers in the AsiaFlux community have meaningfully contributed to improve the current understanding of soil C dynamics, response of soil C fluxes to disturbances and climate change, and regional and global estimation based on model analysis. This review focuses on five important aspects: 1) the historical methodology for soil C flux measurement; 2) responses of soil C flux components to environmental factors; 3) soil C fluxes in typical ecosystems in Asia; 4) the influence of disturbance and climate change on soil C fluxes; and 5) model analysis and the estimation of soil C fluxes in research largely focused in Asia.

低酸素換気応答とは,文字通り生体に低酸素刺激を加えたときの換気の応答パターンを評価する検査方法である。周知の如く,一般に生体に低酸素血症を誘導すると末梢化学受容器,ヒトでは主として頸動脈体を介して換気は代償的に増加する。しかし酸素受容が生命維持に最も重要で必須の生理学的事象であるにもかかわらず,不思議なことにこの低酸素換気応答の程度は個体間のばらつきが非常に大きく,ときには低酸素により換気はむしろ抑制されるという現象すら生ずる。従ってこの応答が種々の心肺疾患の病態の修飾因子となり,病因・病態の解析や治療とくに酸素療法を考えるうえでも重要な意味をもつものと想像されるが,検査手技の複雑さや検査自体のもつ危険性のため,必ずしも日常的な臨床検査項目となるには至っていない。当施設においては,動脈血ガス二重制御装置の開発以来1),高炭酸ガス換気応答と合わせて,本検査を数多くの健常人や患者で比較的容易に施行できるようになった。本稿においては,それらの知見も合わせて,測定方法と評価法に関する現在の問題点を概説し,次に臨床的立場から慢性閉塞性肺疾患と低酸素換気応答にふれ,最後に低酸素換気抑制の問題についても解説を加えたい。

The most effective treatment for adenoid cystic carcinomas arising from minor salivary glands is surgical removal of primary lesion including the wide safety margin. However, it is well known that the salivary gland tumors have poor prognosis and high frequency of metastasis. Therefore, the multidisciplinary therapy that prevents effectively recurrence and metastasis is needed.<BR>Two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxillary sinus were treated according to the follwing multidisciplinary method. Case 1 (T3NOMO by JJC proposal): The patient had surgical removal of the affected maxilla and then radiation therapy. Four weeks later, adjuvant chemotherapy (Adriamycin and Cisplatin) was performed. In addition, UFT and OK-432 were administered continuously up to date from the onset of the treatment. Consequently, the patient remains be disease-free 24 months postoperation. Case 2 (T4NOMO by JJC proposeal): The patient was treated with the multidisciplinary methods such as surgical reduction of a tumor-burden, radiation therapy, intraarterial infusion of cisplatin and 5-FU into a superficial temporal artery and intradermal administration of OK-432. Thereafter, complete regression of the primary tumor was observed. However, metastasis was detected in the regional lymph nodes, which were subjected to radical neck dissection. The patient remains be disease free 8 months postoperation. These findings indicate that the multidisciplinary therapy may improve the prognosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxillary sinus.
