An open-minded Protestant, educator and statesman, Uchigasaki Sakusaburo (1877-1947) obtained a deep knowledge about Anglo-American cultures during his time in England as a college student and at Waseda University as a teacher of Western civilizations. He played a role as a progressive opinion leader along with his fellow-provincial Yoshino Sakuzo in the Taisho period. Through an analysis of the first edition and the revised version of his biography of Abraham Lincoln, published in 1919 and 1929, respectively, the present paper attempts to look into his comparative views on the Civil War and the Great War, on the Civil war, the Meiji Restoration, the Taiping Rebellion and the Unifications of Germany and Italy, and on the constitutional theories and movements in the United States, Meiji Japan, and the early Republic of China. In addition, the paper further reveals his religious faith as a Unitarian believer and his political stance as a middle -of-the-roader, which led to his parting with Yoshino in 1924.

This paper is the first of two companion papers dealing with ultimate longitudinal strength analysis of a container ship considering local loads effects. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the effect of bottom local loads on the longitudinal bending collapse behavior of a large container ship. An important problem is a bending deformation of the double bottom due to upward bottom local loads that may reduce the hull girder ultimate strength.A 1/2+1+1/2 hold model of a container ship is analyzed using nonlinear implicit finite element method. The analysis shows two major effects of the bottom local loads on the ultimate hull girder strength; i.e. the buckling of the outer bottom plating is accelerated due to the increased longitudinal compressive strain, while the effectiveness of the inner bottom plating that is in the tension side of local bottom bending is significantly decreased.

Modeling user activities on the Web is a key problem for various Web services, such as news article recommendation and ad click prediction. In our work-in-progress paper[1], we introduced an approach that summarizes each sequence of user Web page visits using Paragraph Vector[3], considering users and URLs as paragraphs and words, respectively. The learned user representations are used among the user-related prediction tasks in common. In this paper, on the basis of analysis of our Web page visit data, we propose Backward PV-DM, which is a modified version of Paragraph Vector. We show experimental results on two ad-related data sets based on logs from Web services of Yahoo! JAPAN. Our proposed method achieved better results than those of existing vector models.
