The purpose of this paper is to clarify the forming process of landscape in Waseda University, Nishiwaseda Campus through the analysis of "City beauty" by Prof. Koichi Satow and the history of the building and repairing organization. Prof. Koichi Satow and the city beauty of that he had a concept had affected the design of Nishiwaseda Campus. We interpret the concept of the city beauty as a modern adjustment using the beauty factors of "Change" and of "Unity". Which was, inherited through : 1) the deep relation between the building and repairs organization and the architecture laboratories before the Second World War, 2) The leading engineer Sugiura, who followed the steps of campus designing after the Second World War.

The Oita district is a standard area for the Cenozoic stratigraphy in West Japan. Above all the Tsurusaki hills is regarded as the most important area including the type sections of three formations. Main parts of the Takio, the Higashiwasada and the Tsurusaki formations are distributed respectively in the central to north area, in the south and north extremity. They are overlain by the higher terrace sediments. In the south of the hill, the gravels of the Higashiwasada formation, the Takio formation and the higher terrace sediments are developed in intricate pattern and their stratigraphic relation is misleading suggesting that some of these are possibly contemporaneous. While the known index fossil from the formation is only Stegodon orientalis from the basal part of the Tsurusaki formation. Accordingly the supposed ages of the Takio and Higashiwasada formation based on an indirect correlation is not accurate. Therefore it is important to clarify their ages. For settling these problems, the fission track age determination of the accessory zircon from pyroclastic rocks from above mentioned formations were done after a systematic field survey. In norder to observe fission tracks easily and correctly, the etching procedure was examined and the condition was finally settled as following; the etchant was 2:1 mixture of 48%HF and 98% H2SO4 and etching is carried out under pressure at 250°CThe Shikido pyroclastic rock member of the Higashiwasada formation and the Hada pyroclastic rock member of the Takio formation were selected for examination. The age of the Shikido and the Hada pyroclastic rock members are (6.52±1.34)×106 year and (1.44±0.28)×106 year, respectively. The age of the Shikido pyroclastic rock member is comparable with some volcanic rocks in Central Kyushu, for example biotite andesite in Kitatakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture (5.7m.y.B.P.), biotite hornblende rhyolite in Hirado City (5.8m.y.B.P.), etc. Considering sporadical distribution, in Central Kyushu of volcanic rocks with similar lithology to those of the Higashiwasada formation, it must be concluded that the volcanic activity of this age is more extensive than has been supposed. The Hada pyroclastic rock member is correlative with the Meisei tuff bed at MaO horizon of the Osaka group. Comparing the relative position of the Hada pyroclastic rock member and the Stegodon orientalis horizon in the Oita group with the relative position of the Meisei tuff bed and the Stegodon orientalis horizon in the Osaka group, the writer conclude that the Takio formation correspons to the lower and middle parts of the Osaka group.

It can no longer be believed that the Greeks were unique in their agonal spirit. Many scholars argue that competition is typical of ancient societies. The purpose of this paper is to examine sport in the Mycenaean civilization. However, it is necessary to clarify whether the Minoans influenced the Mycenaean sports. Minoan civilization The Minoans mainly practiced bull leaping and boxing. Bull leaping in particular was the most popular sport among the Minoans. The noble participants had to leap over bulls. Though it is supposed that the bull leaping is, like boxing, a kind of competitive sport, there is no certain evidence. On the other hand, the boxers weared a metal helmet protecting the head and face. The purpose of this dangerous boxing is uncertain. We cannot clearly decide whether the boxing and bull leaping are initiation ritual, or secular activity. Some scholars believe that the Minoan sport influenced the Myceaean and Greek sports. The Mycenaeans adopted only the bull sport. The helmeted boxers and bull leaping are unknown in Greek art. Mycenaean civilization Many archaeological evidences confirm the existence of horse-drawn chariots in the ancient Near East, but they were used in war and hunting. Although F. Starke’s new interpretation of the Kikkuli Text was accepted by a few scholars, he wrongly interpreted the Text. Hittites did not enjoy chariot racing. It seems to be possibility that chariot racing was performed by the Myceaeans. However, a few archeological evidences only suggest the sport. The issues of prizes remain unsolved. It is not clear whether the Mycenaean chariot racing influenced Homer. It is clear that sports were part of the funeral ceremony held in honor of the dead. It seems to be reasonable to suppose that the Mycenaeans had funeral games with armed combat, bull leaping and possibly chariot racing. However, some scholars argue that boxing and bull leaping are not funeral game, but initiation ritual in the Aegean civilization. It is the present conditions that opinions about sports in the Mycenaean civilization are argued variously because there is no certain evidence.

Working in accordance with Pierre de Coubertin’s peace thoughts, the Olympic movement considers the promotion of world peace its mission. This thought has been passed down the generations as ‘Fundamental Principle of Olympism’. However, achieving world peace by staging the Olympic Games is impossible, and terrorist attacks and boycotts have served as critical elements undermining Olympism. As this thought of establishing a peaceful society was the cause of de Coubertin’s desire to revive the Olympics, previous research has focused on examining statements regarding peace in the Olympic movement-related literature. However, it is as yet unclear how the peace proposed by Olympism is to be achieved in practice, and this constitutes an ongoing issue in the current field of research.First, this paper surveys the body of previous research on Olympism and de Coubertin’s thinking. Then, citing the peace thought of the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, it attempts to examine what contribution to world peace of Olympism is meant to signify in concrete terms.According to Kant, ‘nature’ is the guarantor of perpetual peace. Human conduct, guided by nature, evolves through ‘competition’ and progresses through the mutual understanding that resolution of conflict leads to a state of peace. Furthermore, Kant believed that our world, guided by nature’s designs, was consistently historical; thus, ‘historical investigations’ may enable us to believe in the future. Therefore, the manner in which Olympism is supposed to contribute to world peace is founded on ‘competition’ and ‘historical investigations’ and the practice of both leads to positive progress towards peace.
