Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally abundant Gram-positive bacterium and a well-known, effective bio-insecticide. Recently, B. thuringiensis has attracted considerable attention as a potential biological control agent for the suppression of plant diseases. In this study, the bacterial wilt disease-suppressing activity of B. thuringiensis was examined in tomato plants. Treatment of tomato roots with B. thuringiensis culture followed by challenge inoculation with Ralstonia solanacearum suppressed the development of wilt symptoms to less than one third of the control. This disease suppression in tomato plants was reproduced by pretreating their roots with a cell-free filtrate (CF) that had been fractionated from B. thuringiensis culture by centrifugation and filtration. In tomato plants challenge-inoculated with R. solanacearum after pretreatment with CF, the growth of R. solanacearum in stem tissues clearly decreased, and expression of defense-related genes such as PR-1, acidic chitinase, and β-1,3-glucanase was induced in stem and leaf tissues. Furthermore, the stem tissues of tomato plants with their roots were pretreated with CF exhibited resistance against direct inoculation with R. solanacearum. Taken together, these results suggest that treatment of tomato roots with the CF of B. thuringiensis systemically suppresses bacterial wilt through systemic activation of the plant defense system.

The present author proposed 'Origami Technology', and envisages the formation of a new discipline; mathematical analysis of Origami and its development in academic applications especially in engineering use. Origami structures consisting of zigzagged faces have foldable/deployable functions as well as solidification characters. Models presented in this paper include typical foldable/deployable thin cylinders, conical-shaped membranes, circular sheets which may be folded or wrapped. These shape-changeable origami models are analytically designed by folding or creasing a flat sheet or a thin plate into a 3-dimentional shape. New types of ultra-light 3-D honeycomb core models and a newly developed core panel named "dia-core" (consisting of 2 periodically dimpled panel pieces) are also presented for use in building such as aerospace structures. The former models are designed by analyzing the helical patterns or structures often found in living organisms, because such helical structures are easily deployed due to the presence of fewer dynamic restraints. The latter are developed on purely geometrical basis. As for academic applications of Origami modeling, two examples are shown; the phyllotaxis of leaves or flowers showing helical patterns, and axial buckling and torsional buckling of cylindrical tubes and conical shells are explained by using origami modeling.

We show an algebraic proof of the method for solving cubic equations by ORIGAMI (paper folding). Using ORIGAMI, we can solve the construction problems that are unsolvable in Euclidean geometry, such as angle trisection and doubling cubes. In our formulation, we solve the radical membership problem in polynomial ideals computing a Grobner basis together with constraints of parameters, which correspond to geometrically degenerate cases. Consequently, cubic equations are clearly solved as construction problems. We also show the construction of another solution by trigonometric functions, that is an application of angle trisection by ORIGAMI.

Statistical study was made on 691 cases of foreign bodies in Japan s o far reported. It was concluded that recently foreign bodies such as suture materials were f requently seen in the patients who underwent gynecologic operation.

都心系統には都心系統安定化リレーシステムが設置されており、万一の送電線事故時は系統内火力発電機と重要負荷で単独系統維持を図っている。この単独系統は一時的に運転維持に成功しても長時間の運転維持は困難であり、早急に本系統に系統並列する必要がある。従来、この系統並列操作は手動で実施していたが、これを自動で行うことで都心系統の迅速な本系統への系統並列を図る本装置を開発した。
