This paper aims to figure out a hidden morphological logic in a complex street network pattern and to recreate a new street network pattern in a same style as the original pattern. First, it introduces a tree-structured model, which is extracted from the graph of original pattern. This approach makes it easier to pick up the relation of each element in the pattern using intergenerational connection along the tree-structure. As a result of analysis on Venice through this approach, both global and local aspects of the pattern are shown.

An oil palm fiber module has been developed to modify a down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor module. The objective of the proposed system is to improve two existing DHS variants of post-treatment unit for UASB treating domestic wastewater, i.e. cube-type and curtain-type sponge as domestic wastewater treatment system for developing countries. This paper describes the potential of oil palm fiber-based DHS (PF-DHS) configuration for sewage treatment. Feasibility of the PF-DHS reactor was evaluated by conducting a six-month continuous operation using actual sewage as feed. The system has been verified to have an excellent organic removal performance achieving 67% of unfiltered COD removal, and nearly perfect SS removal at the HRT of 2 h. It was observed that the organic removal rate was approximately 2.64 kg COD/m3 per day. The result recommended that the proposed PF-DHS reactor would be a promising system to alter sponge-based DHS for domestic wastewater treatment system in developing countries.

A sensitive urinary biomarker for acute kidney injury (AKI) was investigated in beagle dogs with nephrotoxicity induced by gentamicin. Gentamicin sulphate at 25 or 50 mg/kg was injected (s.c.) for 9 days, and conventional urinalysis, ELISA assay of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocal (NGAL) in urine, blood chemistry, and pathological examinations were performed. The dog given gentamicin at 25 mg/kg only showed slight deposition of lysosomal granules in the proximal tubular epithelium of the kidneys without any other significant changes even though urinary NGAL was elevated on Day 10 (day of necropsy). In the dog receiving gentamicin at 50 mg/kg, increases in urinary NGAL were observed on Days 3 and 5, and absence of urination, marked increases in serum urea nitrogen and creatinine, enlargement and discoloration of the kidneys with marked necrosis, and swelling of proximal epithelium were observed. In conclusion, urinary NGAL is considered to be a candidate as a sensitive predictable biomarker of AKI in the gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity model in dogs.

A four-month-old female Labrador retriever was brought to the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Animal Medical Center for examination of its main symptoms of cough, tachypnea and exercise intolerance. Upon examination, the dog was found to have cyanosis and inadequate growth. Echocardiography revealed tetralogy of Fallot. Cardiac catheterization confirmed that the main pulmonary artery was completely occluded and that blood flowed from the aorta to the pulmonary artery. Accordingly, the animal was diagnosed with extreme tetralogy of Fallot.

Urea breath test (UBT) using an infrared spectral analyzer is widely used for non-invasive and rapid detection of gastric Helicobacter spp. in human, but not veterinary medicine. The main purposes of this study were to determine the reference range of the UBT in dogs and to evaluate its clinical usefulness. To address the first aim, 6 healthy laboratory beagles were subjected to UBT and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Gastric endoscopic biopsy samples from the antrum, corpus and fundus were examined for Helicobacter spp. by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, rapid urease test (RUT), histology and cytology. Amoxicillin, metronidazole and omeprazole were given to infected dogs for 14 days, and dogs that became Helicobacter-negative were used to determine the reference range for UBT. To address the second aim, 32 canine patients underwent UBT before upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and the sensitivity and specificity of UBT were calculated based on our newly determined reference range using PCR as the gold standard for detection of Helicobacter spp. Initially, all 6 laboratory beagles were infected in all gastric regions and became uninfected after eradication. The mean ± 2 SD UBT value after eradication was 0.6 ± 1.8‰, and the reference range for UBT was determined to be less than 2.5‰. UBT was completed successfully in 27 patients. Using our reference range, UBT displayed 89% (16/18) sensitivity and 89% (8/9) specificity, indicating that UBT was quite useful for the detection of gastric Helicobacter spp. infection in dogs.
