本研究は,参加型の社会資本整備より,市民主体の継続活動に展開する要因を明らかにするものである.既往研究及び事例調査から,人(参加者とつながり),意識(目標と信頼関係),環境(適正な合意形成の場)の3つの要因を仮定し,詳細の事例分析によって検証を行った.その結果,参加型の社会資本整備より,市民主体の継続活動に展開する流れを明らかにするとともに,その過程において,継続活動において3つの要因の形成が重要であることが明らかとなった.また,3つの要因に課題が生じた場合においては,継続活動が停滞する場合があることも分かった.

Niche breadth and overlap of diets among two sympatric snake species, Elaphe quadrivirgata and Rhabdophis tigrinus, in the paddy fields in Yamagata were studied for four years (1983-1986). Stomach contents were taken by forced regurgitation and classified into five major categories or eight minor categories : major categories mainly consist of taxonomical groups (e.g. frogs or voles) and minor categories indicate species in a major category. In the major categories, frogs were found to be the most dominant for both E. quadrivirgata and R. tigrinus with food niche breadth, 0.331 (E. quadrivirgata) and 0.441 (R. tigrinus). Food resource overlap was 0.879 in the major categories. In the minor categories, Japanese tree frogs, Hyla japonica were most dominant among the two snake species with food niche breadth, 0.513 (E. quadrivirgata) and 0.600 (R. tigrinus). Food resource overlap was 0.875. Thus, the food breadth was slightly wider among R. tigrinus than E. quadrivirgata with high food resource overlap in both categories. No difference in food size and the distribution of the captured spots was found between the two snake species. Seasonal niche overlap was high (0.788). Abundant frogs as prey items of the snakes would permit a high overlap of food resources between the two snake species in the field studied.

The activity of a venomous snake, habu (Trimeresurus flavoviridis) was represented by the frequencies of bites of sleeping men in the Okinawa Islands. Five climate factors recorded at the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory were selected to get correlations to the snake activity on each day in each season through logistic regression analyses. Habu was estimated to be active on the days of low means of air pressure in winter, of high means of air temperature in March, or high means of humidity in autumn. In summer with high means of air temperature and humidity few climate factors were correlated to the snake activity. The patterns of seasonal change in mean temperature and mean humidity corresponded with these results. The mean air temperature, the mean humidity and the precipitation were the first, second and third important factors, respectively, in the analyses of all through the year. This is the first intensive study to analyze the daily change in the snake activity in field.

Nine OBSs (Ocean Bottom Seismographs) were deployed just before the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (M8.0) in the source region, off Hokkaido island, Japan for the period from 7 August to 21 September 2003. The observation area was located about 50-100km landward of the southern Kuril trench where the Pacific plate is subducted toward Hokkaido island. The main shock occurred on 26 September 2003, just several days after this 50-days observation by OBS. Until this big earthquake, the seismic activity in this area has been extremely low in contrast with the adjacent trench areas. No big earthquake has occurred since the 1952 Tokachi-oki earthquake (M8.2). From the phase-reading data, 186 micro- and ultra micro-earthquakes were located in the regular seismic active zones. The b-value of 0.82 from the earthquakes with magnitude from -0.6 to 2.9 could support the fore-shocks of the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake. Several interesting phenomena were found in this study as follows. (1) Many clusters of events took place simultaneously in the surrounding source region after a short quiescence period of several days. (2) An enormous number of curious burst signals, which oscillated for only a few seconds, continued to appear at almost OBSs. In particular, at two OBSs DHH and DK being the shortest distance to the Kuril trench, over 3500 bursts of events with amplitudes of 10-7m/s were counted during the observation period. On the other side, OBS DD, which was close to the epicenter of main event and far away from the trench, around the beginning of September 2003, the rate of occurrence abruptly rose to over twice of the previous rate, which has kept the low rate until then. The start time of activation was almost the same time of the appearance of many widespread clusters of earthquakes. These results will be applied to a research project of the great earthquakes occurring along the trenches.

Since its beginnings, geography in Spain has followed a particular development course, defined mainly by a close and ever evolving relationship between academic geography and professional geography. Over the last few decades, the two geographies have been mutually involved, creating a situation in which the professional practice of geography, originating with cartographers and engineers in the late nineteenth century, has become an increasingly important factor for the renewal of academic research, mostly undertaken in universities. Innovation was possible, on the one hand, thanks to the consolidation of academic geography, which today concerns not only traditional areas of knowledge, but also fields where there is growing social demand, such as environment, landscape management, regional planning, urbanism or risk analysis. All these themes, on the other hand, have opened up new professional opportunities for geography graduates, who have been contributing with their practice in administration and private enterprises to make more people aware of the importance of geography as a useful science. The fruitful relationship between the two geographies briefly described above is the main concern of this article, which introduces a mixed approach of science historiography and radiography. After analyzing the evolution of academic geography through doctoral theses and major journals specialized in geography, the author highlights the role of professional geography, focusing on how geographers are entering in new fields of the labor market and are defending their interests as a professional group. The analysis is complemented by reference to successive new plans of studies launched in university geographical education, an important reform accelerated by the so-called Bologna process. The article concludes by pointing out some of the research lines that have great potential for future development with international repercussions.
