It is well-known that the corrosion rate of iron and steel is affected by the Fe3+ concentration in acidified solutions. Experimental works on oxidation from Fe2+ to Fe3+ by the dissolved oxygen in various electrolytes have been carried out. Generally, the process is first order with respect to Fe2+, and it depends much on the pH. The reaction rate increased with decreasing pH in HCl, while the rate decreased with decreasing pH in other solutions such as phosphate, sulfate and citrate buffer solutions. The reaction rate was less than 10-3min-1 in solutions of pH<4, or the increment of Fe3+ was only 10-5M/min in solutions containing Fe2+ of 10-2M. The limiting current density for the cathodic process of those Fe3+ to Fe2+ would be 1.6×10-5ma/cm2, which is very small in comparison with the corrosion rate of Fe in aerated solutions. Therefore, it is concluded that the effect of oxidation of Fe2+ by the dissolved oxygen is negligible on corrosion of iron and steel.

琉球王国が主に近世期に生産し消費した琉球近世瓦,そのうち石垣島で生産,消費されたものを集成し分類するのが本稿の目的である。先ず呼称や分類について一定の方式を提案したい。琉球近世瓦については筆者のものを含め既に幾つか論考があるが,本稿では昨年度に筆者が示した基準に従い,諸特徴と瓦当紋様に注目して分類を試みた。沖縄本島の琉球近世瓦の瓦当紋様において,その大半のモチーフは牡丹である。そしてこれら牡丹紋様は大まかに五つに分けることが出来る。この分類を適用すると石垣島には牡丹紋様IIと分類した紋様系統が存在し,沖縄本島とは異なる独自の変遷を辿る。各々の系統毎に子房,花弁,さらに軒平瓦に置いては左右に大きく表現される葉を主要素としてその変遷を追い,型式学的分類を試みた。さらに葺き方に関する特徴,流儀に関する特徴を明らかにし,沖縄本島との共通点,相違点に注意しつつ分類を試みた。

It is reported that there were earthquake-proof buildings called "Disin no Ma" in the mansions of some of the feudal lords of ancient Japan. Recently the author investigated a "Disin no Ma" that was in a good state of preservation in the site of tha Hikone castle. This building was constructed two hundreds and sixty four years ago. The design of this structure is very striking and worthy of note from the standpoint of present structural engineering. The author points out the gret value of the structure in studying the historical development of earthquake-proof construction in Japan.

The 150 km long Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line Active Fault System (ISTL) in central Japan is one of the most active fault systems in Japan. Paleoseismologcal studies 1980s have revealed that the most recent event and the average recurence interval of the ISTL. The approximately 7 km long portion of the fault system between Matsumoto and Okaya has been regarded as a gap without any active fault trace. The gap namely the “Shiojiri Pass Gap” has long been taken as a segment boundary owing to the geometric discontinuity. Recent geomorphological analyses of the gap have demonstrated a through-going left-lateral slip assocaited with recent earthquakes in this area, based on aerial photograph interpretation and excavation studies. Excavation study on this portion revealed that the latest faulting event occurred between 1,700 cal. B.P. to 1,310 cal. B.P. (255 A.D. -645 A.D.). The timing of the last faulting event at this study area coincides with the timing in the Gofukuji fault and Okaya fault. The active faults extending from the Matsumoto basin as far as the northwestern margin of the Suwa basin display the evidence for its recent reactivation at the same time.

In The Poetics of Space (1957), Gaston Bachelard adopts a phenomenological approach to the literary image for the first time. In the volume, he introduces the notion of "Retentissements" (echoes)-the creative reception of image-which is given a central role in the work. This paper aims to examine the evolution of his theory, particularly in relation to his epistemology and earlier theory of art. When Bachelard refers to Husserl's phenomenology in his epistemological work, he criticizes it as too "formal." To Bachelard, the examples Husserl gives do not provide a sufficient understanding of the relationship between subject and object in science. In his earlier theory of art, Bachelard also establishes his distance from Sartre's phenomenology, which draws a clear distinction between the reality and the image. For Bachelard, they are intimately interwoven and escape from the fact-imagination opposition. Paradoxically, although he seems hostile toward phenomenologists, his critique eventually leads him toward a new phenomenology of the imagination. In the process of his debate with them, Bachelard appropriates some features of their theories in order to forge his own. In this way, he evolves his theory of the imagination and, in this sense, he is influenced by other phenomenological thought and, in turn, echoes (retentir) them.
