It is well known that adequate sleep is essential for human health. A decline in the quality and total duration of sleep decreases physical activity levels and increases daytime sleepiness, as well as increases the risk of lifestyle-related diseases and depression. This decline has been observed in the Japanese population owing to changes in lifestyle. Moreover, the quality and duration of sleep vary greatly with age. Previous studies have shown that sleep disorders commonly occur in the elderly. However, currently, the number of young individuals experiencing increased daytime sleepiness and sleep disorders is increasing. The quality and duration of sleep is determined by numerous factors. Physical activity is one of the synchronizers of biological rhythm. Therefore, continuing exercise is desirable for health and is essential for good sleep. This study emphasizes the need for further studies on the relationship between sleep and exercise in order to determine factors required for increasing the quality and duration of sleep.

The objective of this study is to investigate the situations of English teaching at the early stage of the Meiji era, analyzing existent historical materials. Although only a few parts of the books we employ in this thesis describe English education for pupils, I gleaned the fragments to certify the existence of English education for the primary school students. The traits common to the schools which have evidence of English education, discovered through exploration of the circumstances of school foundations are as follows: 1) The schools were established in the early period of the Meiji era. 2) The contents of the class were determined by the textbooks available, rather than by the predetermined curricula. 3) The schools received financial aid for their administration. 4) The schools were contributed to by some intellectuals who devoted themselves to establishing the schools. In conclusion, taking all the various factors into consideration, it is evident that a number of public primary schools did indeed teach Japanese pupils the English language at the beginning of the Meiji Era, and that the styles and contents of the classes were varied according to the situation.

「国際法と国内法の関係」に関する学説の長期的な展開過程を追跡し,その蓄積と今日的意義を明らかにする.なお,国別・法系別に論じる必要がありうることに配慮し,特に国際法と日本法の関係に焦点を当てる.I.では,実行を概観する.一貫性を維持しつつ現代的法現象にも対応するために,基礎概念の再検討が必要となることが確認される.II.では,いくつかの基礎概念に関する日本の学説展開の軌跡と蓄積とを跡付ける.その結果, (1)体系間関係, (2)国内的効力, (3)国内的序列, (4)直接適用可能性に関する理論の発展には連続性があり,それらの総合的に把握し再構成させうることが示される.III.では,包摂的理論枠組みの試論として「部分連結する多重サイクル」モデルを提示する.合わせて,(1)「多元的構成」の再考,(2)国内的効力概念の再定位,(3)国家責任論との関係の再検討,という今後の研究課題を提示する.

There have been two ways of understanding about the original form of the simultaneous teaching. Some preceding studies regard the monitorial system, especially arranged according to Lancasterian plan, as the origin. Others attribute it to David Stow's "gallery lesson". This paper has attempted to clarify the essential qualities of the simultaneous teaching, inquiring into the differences between the monitorial system and Stow's system. Monitorial system had dual aspects of simultaneity; one was the simultaneous class teaching by the monitors, and the other was the simultaneous behavior of all the pupils, which evoked the pupils' readiness for the following lessons. The mechanical repetition of these simultaneous learning and behaving kept the order of monitorial schools. On the other hand, the moral influence of master and the mutual sympathy of pupils made possible Stow's simultaneous instruction at the gallery. Curiously, in spite of these differences, the arrangements of Stow's schoolroom had something in common with that of Lancasterian school. Furthermore, Stow also emphasized the importance of "physical exercises" which called the attention of the pupils at the commencement of a lesson. For example, "rising up and sitting down simultaneously" was imposed upon the pupils. So it comes to light that Stow's simultaneous instruction as well as Lancasterian system included the simultaneous behavior for order. Consequently, it can be said that the simultaneous teaching was not only a instructing method but also a way of school management. Therefore it has supported the disciplinary power of modern schools.
