Takao-dayû, the original work of ukiyo-e in Freer Gallery of Art, is a picture of Takao-dayû drawn by Okumura Masanobu with a comment written by Hanaogi, the famous yûjo of Ôgiya in Yoshiwara imitating the Sawada Tôkô-style calligraphy. The content of the comments is a love letter including a hokku “Kimi ha ima komagata atari hototogisu” that is said Manji Takao, or Takao-dayû the Second of Miuraya sent to Date Tsunamune of the Sendai Clan. This letter was probably made up based on the legend of the love affair between them described in the documentary-like novel Sendai Hagi. Whether the story is true or not, the romantic atmosphere of Yoshiwara is promoted by the comments reminding readers Takao and Hanaôgi, and behind the comment of Hanaôgi, you can sense the attempt by Ôgiya Uemon or Bokuga, who was the employer of Hanôgi, to make her more famous together with Takigawa, who was also a famous yûjo, in the Tenmei period.

It is well known that the rapid development in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has followed the development of powerful computers. In this report, we show firstly that the same situation is also recognized at NAL. Secondly, we give the requirements for computer power (processing speed and main memory capacity) that is necessary for the CFD to play important roles in the future R&D of aerospace planes and inovative aircraft,and we point out that today's supercomputer architectures are not likely to attain the processing speed required and that more parallelism should be developed. Finally, we discuss several important items in designing the target computer, bipolar technologybased processing element vs. MOS technology based processing element, shared memory vs. distributed memory, interconnection network's topology, software technologies' cost and running cost of the target computer and so on.

In this paper, it is shown that the Numerical Wind Tunnel (NWT) with an actual performance of more than 100 times higher than Fujitsu-VP400 is feasible using a multicomputer architecture and crossbar interconnection network.

In a few years, a computer which processes CFD programs over 100 times faster than the Fujitsu VP400 and has a main memory capacity of more than 32G bytes will be required for CFD technology to play an important role in aerospace research and development. A distributed main memory parallel processor is free from the memory throughput bottleneck which prevents the implementation of shared memory parallel processors with the necessary speed. In the light of regular characteristics of CFD codes, a distributed memory parallel processor is likely to deliver the above-mentioned processing speed. Its characteristics include a physically distributed main memory which logically provides programmers with global and local memory views, processing elements with high speed RISC scalar units and high speed vector units with large capacity vector registers, and a crossbar network which interconnects a large number of processing elements. Such a processor can be suitably called the "Numerical Wind Tunnel". This paper describes the basic main memory structure, system configuration, processing element, and interconnection network and communication mechanism of the Numerical Wind Tunnel.

計算空気力学(CFD)の研究を推進し,その成果を航空機および航空宇宙機の研究開発に役立たせる為には,CFDプログラムの処理能力がFujitsu VP400の100倍以上のCFD専用の計算機-超高速数値風洞(UHSNWT)をここ2~3年のうちに,更にこれを10倍以上上廻るUHSNWTを1990年代末に開発することが是非とも必要となる。報告はこのUHSNWTが備えるべき要件について,開発・運転コスト,信頼性,CFD計算法に対する適合性,運用環境等の視点から論ずる。同時に報告はこれ等の要件を満足するUHSNWTの構想を 1.これ迄のベクトル計算機の使用経験 2.種々のベクトル計算機モデルのベクトル処理に対するソフトウェアシミュレーション 3.LSI技術の将来の発展動向 に基づいて述べる。報告はVP400の100倍以上の性能のUHSNWTはクロスバーネットワークを採用した分散主記憶型並列計算機により実現できることを結論付けている。

LINPACKベンチマークに並列化とベクトル化を施し、NCA付きAP1000を用いて性能を評価した。LINPACKの並列化では負荷が均等でかつデータパラレル実行が可能となるようにデータを分散させ、ブロッキングを施すことによって行列積演算や外積演算といったベクトル化が容易でかつ高い性能が得られる演算に帰結させた。理論ピーク性能に対して、単体実行時で61%、並列実行時で47%の性能が得られた。また、1000×1000の行列を解く場合、NCAを付加した16セセルで、NCAを付加しない128セルのAP1000とほぽ同等の性能が得られた。

NLR(オランダ国立航空宇宙技術研究所)主催第3回ISNaS(Information System for flow simulation based on the Navier-Stokes equations)シンポジウムが1991年9月19日から20日にオランダのノールドーストポルダーのNLAにおいて開催された。本報告はNLAの要請に基づき同シンポジウムにおいて「航空宇宙技術研究所(日本)における数値風洞計画と計算空気力学」として発表するために,数値シミュレーショ技術等検討委員会のワーキンググループである「先進的研究課題ワーキンググループ」が取り纏めた数値風洞に対するユーザー検討と計算空気力学の現状についての報告の概要(NAL SP-13,日本航空宇宙学会誌1990年10月号にて発表済)をもとに英文でまとめたものである。

Psychic (occult or supernatural) detectives in fiction enjoy considerable popularity among the public readership. The first character of note is said to be “Dr. Martin Hesselius,” appearing in several stories published in 1872 by the Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu, and the growth of the genre initially peaked between the late Victorian period and the 1930s. Academic study of the “Psychic Detective” novels, however, has been given much less attention than Gothic Literature or Horror fiction. This paper analyzes several characteristic aspects of this genre, through a discussion comparing it to Gothic novels, ghost stories, and the greater corpus of mainstream detective fiction.

This paper estimates the effect of state judiciary presence on rent extraction in Brazilian local governments. We measure rents as irregularities related to waste or corruption uncovered by central government auditors. The identification strategy is based on an institutional rule of state judiciary branches according to which prosecutors and judges tend to be assigned to the most populous among contiguous counties forming a judiciary district. Our research design exploits this rule by comparing counties that are largest in their district to counties with identical population size from other districts in the same state where they are not the most populous. Instrumental variable estimates suggest that state judiciary presence reduces the share of inspections with irregularities related to waste or corruption by about 10 percent. The effect is concentrated among first-term mayors, suggesting that judicial presence operates through an increased probability of detection and prosecution rather than an increased probability of conviction, which should discipline second-term mayors as well.

When Lehman Brothers went bankrupt in 2008, as in previous global financial crises, we could see that all banks expanding internationally tended to have closer linkage with global markets to perform balance-sheets adjustments. In recent years, the Nikkei stock average has been influenced by international linkage a lot. We analyzed the movement of shareholders by using the data of the Japanese distribution of dividends to shareholders. From factor analysis for the transition of investment ratio of each department, we could explain the actions of investments. Also, we performed multiple regression analysis to analyze the linkagebetween the Nikkei stock average and foreign stock market indices using the Dow Jones average, the S&P500, and the SSE composite indices as explained variables. From these results, we succeeded in showing the international linkage of Nikkei stock average by using statistical data.
