Diplopodan fauna of Mt. Tsukuba and vicinity between 1987 and 1989 is studied. Thirty poecies/subspecies of nineteen genera, eleven families and six orders are listed. All of them except one soecies, Eudigraphis lakakuwai lakakuwai (MIYOSHI9, are newly redorded from Ibaraki Prefecture which locates northern Kanto District. The taxonomically undetermined species/subsoecies are included in the list. Three of them are unable to identify soecific taxa because their adult males are not been obtained and their reporuductive appendages are unknown. The remaining seven are all unique for having unique characters different from closely allied species/subspecies. Some of them seem to be undescribed species/sucspecies. However, no nomenclatural descriptions are presented in this paper, because not a sufficient number of specimens are available for determining whether they should be newly described at present. Collecting sites, and a pictorial key is given for genera, species and subspecies of northern Kanto District comprising many taxa recorded from neghbouring prefectures and unrecorded from Ibakarki Prefecture to idetify diplopods in further faunistic study.筑波山は北開東の茨城県に位置し,ちょうど,動物相が関東型から東北型へと移行する地域にある。この動物相の変化は,特に,倍脚類のように,移動力が小さく地域毎に種が分化しやすい動物群に顕著である。倍脚類は土壌動物として土壌生態系の中でも重要な地位を占めることから,生態学的な研究対象となる一方で, このように種分化が進行しつつある動物群としても興味深いものがある。

The autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission data from the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta shows distinct peaks in momentum space which disperse with binding energy in the superconducting state, but not in the pseudogap phase. Although it is tempting to attribute a nondispersive behavior in momentum space to charge ordering, a deconstruction of the autocorrelation reveals that the nondispersive peaks arise from the tips of the Fermi arcs, which themselves do not change with binding energy.

This chapter examines a reconciliation ceremony held at an urban settlementin Dili, Timor-Leste. The ceremony was aimed at ending violencecaused by Martial Arts Groups, which had made the settlement notorious inDili. Previous concerted efforts to curb this violence had been unsuccessful;despite the several programmes established in attempts to tackle the problem,violence became a part of daily life. Cruz Joven—the practices ofpiety (exercitia pietatis) introduced to Timor-Leste during the Indonesianera—was brought to the settlement to commemorate 500 years of the presenceof the Church. This became a central point of the ceremony, andreconciliation has since been effective. Elements from two belief systems,Catholicism and traditional beliefs, were employed in the ceremony.Following the event, the situation changed dramatically, although someincidents have continued to occur. Catholic faith has been held firmly bythe people of Timor-Leste, especially after Indonesian occupation.Conversely, traditional beliefs formed and adopted from the local contextalso have an appealing power for locals.

Recent research in cultural anthropology has shown that smuggling is notnecessarily an act of negation of the rule of the state or an attempt toundermine this rule. In fact, smugglers quite often require the rule of thestate for their actions to be justified as ‘exceptions’.In 1999, the Province of East Timor became gained independence fromthe Republic of Indonesia, and in 2002 the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste was born. As a result, an international border was created on theisland separating the two countries. Since that time, the border surroundingOecusse District, a detached territory of Timor-Leste, has become a stagefor routine smuggling – an ‘open secret’ in the neighbouring villages.This chapter is structured around a series of events that occurred inNapan, a village on the Indonesian side of the international border surroundingOecusse District. The events involved villagers and soldiers of theIndonesian army assigned to border guard duty. This chapter gives anaccount of these events and then analyses them. The events threatened thedelicate balance between the villagers and the soldiers, at the same timelaying bare the contradictions and failures inherent in the rule of the stateover its people and the way in which the border is administered. We shallexamine the complex relationship between the power and violence inherentin state rule that clearly manifested itself in the process, at the same timediscussing more universal issues such as the relationship between the powerof the state and its people or citizens’ sense of belonging to the state.
