千葉県九十九里浜の前浜堆積物中から,多数のMacaronichnus segregatis様生痕を発見した.この生痕は,剥ぎ取り試料面上において高さ2-3mm,幅3-50mmほどの円形もしくは長楕円形を成し,内部が細粒砂サイズの無色鉱物で充填され,その周囲に磁鉄鉱などの有色鉱物が濃集することが特徴である.この生痕ときわめて似た特徴を有する本邦第四系産生痕化石Macaronichnus segregatisの形成者については,従来,小型等脚類ヒメスナホリムシとするものと,オフェリアゴカイの様なゼン虫類とするものの2つの説があった.この生痕が産する堆積物からは,ヒメスナホリムシは一切採集されなかったものの,オフエリアゴカイ科の多毛類であるEuzonus sp.が多数採集された.このことから判断すると,このM.segregatis様生痕の形成者は,オフェリアゴカイ類と判断して良いだろう.

Military-level mutual cooperation between Japan and U.S. in the field of disaster relief in Japan germinated since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. After the earthquake, some of local authorities hosting U.S. Force Japan(USFJ) started to build a cooperation with USFJ for disaster relief. The Great East Japan Earthquake accelerated and expanded these relationships. At present, contribution of USFJ to disaster relief in Japan is incorporated with institution for JapanU.S. Defense Cooperation and local authorities not hosting USFJ also start to building a disaster relief cooperation with USFJ. Major challenges of the cooperation today are solving institutional ambiguity (e.g. conditions for disaster relief by USFJ) and expanding opportunities for cooperation between local authorities and USFJ such as joint expertise.

In functional electrical stimulation, the time delay between an input voltage and the corresponding muscle force is a significant issue. This study revealed that the joint angle/voltage relationship can be modeled as a fourth-order system. This enables the inclusion of a time delay in the high-order phase delay of the force/voltage relationship, which may lead to delay recovery using a suitable controller. Accordingly, a full state feedback controller is proposed in this study, to recover the phase delays. Jerk measurement is mandatory for full state feedback controllers owing to the joint the fourth-order joint angle/voltage relationship. This issue can be solved by the recent development of high-resolution encoders. Finally, the validity of the proposed method was verified experimentally.

Finger deformities refer to the symptoms where a flexed or extended joint becomes fixed in one direction and is prevented from returning to a normal state due to muscle or tendon abnormalities around the joint as a result of trauma or a pathological abnormality. The deformities exist in numerous forms, and their causes are known to be either a muscle imbalance or tendon rupture. We focused on the finger deformity forms of the boutonnière and swan-neck deformity. To clarify the formation mechanisms of these deformities, conventional studies have used cadaveric fingers whereas in this study we used the finite element method to model the mechanism of human finger flexion and extension (extensor tendons, flexor tendons, phalanges, tendon pulleys, and ligaments). Using this model, flexion angles of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) and the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint were calculated with conditions for a tendon (central band, lateral band, flexor digitorum superficialis tendon) rupture and tendon tension abnormalities. The results have shown that the conditions which most resembled the boutonnière deformity were those of the central band removal model, and the conditions which most resembled the swan-neck deformity were those of the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon removal model and the tendon tension abnormalities. These results are in agreement with those from clinical observations and cadaveric finger experiments, and demonstrated that the finite element method was effective for clarifying the mechanisms for finger deformity formations.

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the representations of “agriculture and rural space” in MANGA, one of the major genres of popular culture. Today in Japan, “consumerist gaze” has a significant influence upon rural areas. The popular culture, where such influence can be easily found, has been subjected to study. Even though, few studies have focused on the subculture genres like MANGA. This paper picks up 26 MANGA works which treated agricultural subject or whose settings were in rural space at that time. In the first step, the trend of settings and descriptions in those works is analyzed. According to this trend, these works are divided into 4 groups, and their features are shown below ; group A “comedy-style and personal topics (e.g. marriage)”; group B “dealing with social problems” ; group C “return to native place (U-turn) and significant concern about rural/food culture” ; group AC is intermediate between A and C. Additionally, group A is divided into A1 and A2 according to whether “out-migrants (I-turn)”appear in the works. Next, 4 works which are representative of groups except AC are examined. By this analysis, several representations of “agriculture and rural space” and their transition process in MANGA works are defined. Before the late 70s, “agriculture and rural space” was represented as unrefined “premodern”, compared to refined industry/urban area. Afterward it came to be represented as “problematic modern” as same as urban area, and after the late 90s as “alternatives to modernity”. Since around 2000, “agriculture and rural space” is represented as “hetero-culture” which is equal option to city. Generally, the comedy-style works turn the negative representation into positive one. In conclusion, the characteristics of that representations in MANGA are defined as; the inverse of dominant sense of values by “laughter” ; the ceaseless shift of themselves through intertextual acts.

In an attempt to predict the epidemic incidence of Japanese encephalitis in human population, a long-term surveillance on Culex tritaeniorhynchus, the vector of Japanese encephalitis virus, has been carried out at several observation stations in Toyama Prefecture since 1969. The numbers of the mosquito captured by the light trap had been decreasing since 1965 until 1977,and then began to reverse from 1978. This increasing trend appeared clear in 1982,although some decreases in the numbers were observed in 1984,1986 and 1988 in comparison with the previous years. The major cause of increase in the numbers of the mosquito may be attributed to the acquisition of insecticide resistance. Aerospray of agricultural pesticides or fungicides may not inhibit the appearance of the mosquito. In fact, the resistant/sensitive ratios for fenthion, fenitrothion and malathion of a resistant strain of C. tritaeniorhynchus, established in Toyama Prefecture, were 6,557,5,272 and 2,454,respectively. In an exposure experiment with the pesticide aerospray over a paddy field lethalities ranging from 7.6 to 71.6% were observed with the resistant strain of C. tritaeniorhynchus; these percentages could not be compared with the complete death of a sensitive strain.

Kori-tofu is a traditional food in Japan. Kori-tofu is known to decrease serum LDL-cholesterol and triacylglycerol. Kori-tofu also decreases HbA1c, indicating improved sugar metabolism. A dominant hypothesis regarding these phenomena is that the undigested protein fraction of kori-tofu (resistant protein) binds to bile acids in the intestine, preventing bile acid resorption. Recent studies have shown that bile acids are a type of signaling molecule that activates FXR and TGR5. This can explain why the binding activity of bile acid, involving resistant protein, relates to lipid and sugar metabolism. Resistant protein in kori-tofu is increased during its production process, including high-pressure treatment of fresh tofu, freezing and low-temperature aging. The abundance of resistant protein can explain the function of kori-tofu.

従来のワクチン研究から, 一般に, ある感染症に対するワクチンはその感染症の感染経路に従って投与するのが最も効果的であると考えられている.従って, 腸管粘膜から侵入してくる感染症に対するワクチンは, 経口および腸管粘膜上皮からの投与が望ましく, 粘膜局所のIgA抗体産生の増強が重要である.しかしこの経路を投与方法とするワクチンである粘膜ワクチンの開発は遅れている.現在用いられているワクチンは, いかにして病原体を弱毒化するかといった手法で開発されてきた.一方, 近年のバイオテクノロジーの進歩により, 必要と思われる部分を組み合わせてワクチンを作り上げるコンポーネントワクチンの考えが導入され, ワクチンをデザインして作るという考え方が主流となっている.この場合, 粘膜ワクチンはそれに適する運搬体と感染防御抗原を組み合わせワクチンを構築する.腸管の粘膜局所での抗体産生を期待する粘膜ワクチンでは, その抗原運搬体として腸管内で抗原提示の可能な細菌や人工膜が検討され, 腸管侵入性細菌の弱毒株や無毒で腸管内でのエピトープの発現が可能な細菌およびリポソームなどが用いられてきた.粘膜ワクチンとして, 乳酸菌を抗原運搬体として用いるワクチンは, 挿入する遺伝子を遺伝子レベルで無毒化することにより, 病原体を弱毒化したワクチンに比べ, より安全な経口ワクチンの開発が可能であると考えられている.本稿では, 腸管感染症に対する粘膜ワクチンの現状と, 組換え乳酸菌を用いた粘膜ワクチンの開発について解説する.
