Data sharing has gained importance in scientific communities because scientific associations and funding organizations require long term preservation and dissemination of data. To support psychology researchers in data archiving and data sharing, the Leibniz Institute for Psychology Information developed an archiving facility for psychological research data in Germany: PsychData. In this paper we report different types of data requests that were sent to researchers with the aim of building up a sustainable data archive. Resulting response rates were rather low, however, comparable to those published by other authors. Possible reasons for the reluctance of researchers to submit data are discussed.

Chlorella, a unicellular green alga, contains various antioxidants and other nutrients such as amino acids and fiber. Previous studies have reported that supplementation with multiple antioxidants reduces arterial stiffness, a well-established cardiovascular risk factor. We investigated the effects of Chlorella intake on arterial stiffness using a single-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover study design. Fourteen young men took placebo or Chlorella tablets for four weeks, with a 12-week washout period between trials, in a randomized order. Before and after each trial, blood pressure, heart rate, and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, an index of arterial stiffness, were measured. Treatment compliance was comparable between the two groups. There were no differences in blood pressure and heart rate before and after supplementation in both the placebo and Chlorella groups. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity decreased after Chlorella intake (before vs after intake; 11.6 ± 0.2 vs 11.1 ± 0.1 m/s, p = 0.01), but not after placebo intake (11.4 ± 0.2 vs 11.4 ± 0.2 m/s, p = 0.98). Multicomponent analysis of the Chlorella-containing tablet detected nutrients that can reduce arterial stiffness, such as antioxidant vitamins, arginine, potassium, calcium, and n-3 unsaturated fatty acids. These results suggest that intake of a Chlorella-containing multicomponent supplement can decrease arterial stiffness.

(1)1983年および1984年4月から11月にかけて,茨城県谷田部町農業研究センターの圃場およびその周辺の畑地と林で見られたキジバトの個体数を数えた.その結果,畑では,ムギ,トウモロコシ,ラッカセイなどの刈り跡やダイズ畑で多く見られる傾向があった.それに対して,林の個体数は安定していた.(2)キジノミトの〓のう内容物を分析した結果,ほとんどの餌が植物質で占められ,それも農作物の割合が高かった.(3)キジバトの餌を林床と畑からサンプリングした結果,植物質の餌は畑に集中していて,林床ではわずかしかみられなかった.(4)これらのことから,キジバトは,繁殖場所である林では密度が安定しているが,畑では採餌のために比較的広い範囲から個体が集まり,特にムギやダイズなどの刈り跡に集中して餌を得ていると思われる.

キジバトは北海道では夏鳥で,長沼町での生息期間は3月下旬から11月下旬であった。調査期間中に,生息密度の大きな変動はなかった。繁殖期間は,4月上旬から10月下旬までであった。抱卵期間は14~17日(15.6±0.6日,n=126),育雛期間は14~19日(16.6±1.2日,n=126)であった。1978年までは,ダイズの発芽期と繁殖のピークがよく一致し,雛のいる巣が多く,ダイズの被害も多かった。しかし,ドイツトウヒの下枝の刈取りにより営巣環境が悪くなった1980年以後は,ダイズの発芽期に営巣数が少なく,雛のいる巣がほとんどなく,ダイズの被害は少なかった。孵化率は,8か年の平均で54%,巣立ち率は74%,繁殖成功率は40%であった。

Background: The compression-to-ventilation ratio for basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was changed from 15:2 to 30:2, but there are few human studies comparing chest-compression-only CPR with standard CPR. Methods and Results: From the All-Japan Utstein Registry in the 30:2 CPR era, 173,565 adult cardiac arrests witnessed by bystanders were included. On arrival at the scene, emergency medical services responders assessed the status of dispatcher-assisted CPR instruction and bystander CPR technique (chest compression with or without rescue breathing). The primary endpoint was favorable neurological outcome 30 days after cardiac arrest. The prevalence of dispatcher-assisted CPR instruction increased year by year, contributing to an overall increase of chest-compression-only bystander CPR from 20.6% to 35.0%. Among 78,150 patients receiving bystander CPR, favorable neurological outcome did not differ between dispatcher-assisted and -unassisted CPR (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.00; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.94–1.08). Chest-compression-only CPR resulted in better favorable neurological outcome than standard CPR in the whole cohort (adjusted OR, 1.09; 95% CI: 1.00–1.18) and in the subgroup with cardiac etiology (adjusted OR, 1.12; 95% CI: 1.02–1.22). The addition of rescue breathing provided no neurological benefit in the non-cardiac etiology subgroup. Conclusions: In the 30:2 CPR era, dispatcher-assisted CPR instruction contributed to an increase of chest-compression-only bystander CPR, supporting the use of chest-compression-only CPR for bystander-witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in all adults.  (Circ J 2013; 77: 2742–2750)

Activity-dependent changes in synaptic strength are considered mechanisms underlying learning and memory. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in activity-dependent synaptic plasticity such as long-term potentiation. Recent experimental evidence supports the role of BDNF in memory processes: Memory acquisition and consolidation are associated with an increase in BDNF mRNA expression and the activation of its receptor TrkB. Genetic as well as pharmacologic deprivation of BDNF or TrkB impairs learning and memory. In a positively motivated radial arm maze test, activation of the TrkB/phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3-K) signaling pathway in the hippocampus is associated with consolidation of spatial memory through an activation of translational processes. In a negatively motivated passive avoidance test, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) is activated during acquisition of fear memory. Furthermore, recent findings suggest the importance of interaction between BDNF/TrkB signaling and NMDA receptors for spatial memory. A Src-family tyrosine kinase, Fyn plays a role in this interaction by linking TrkB with NR2B. These findings suggest that BDNF/TrkB signaling in the hippocampus plays a crucial role in learning and memory.

Effect of Ca, Ti, P, S and C, which will possiblly be alloyed in Silumin from the raw material; Silicon, on Silumin has already been reported. In this report effects of other 20 adding elements (Ag, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, V, W and Zn) on the hardness, microstructure and casting surface of Silumin has been studied. Relations between the content of additional elements and the Rockwell hardness (B scale) of Silumin are shown in Table 2 and Fig. 1a-d. Microstructures of slowly cooled or chillcast specimens are shown in Photo. 1-92, and the casting surfaces are also shown in Photo. 96-115. The results of observations may be summarized as follows;(1) The most effective element to increare the hardness of Silumin is found to be Mg followed by Cu, although the addition of Co, Cr, Ni and Mn are found also to be very effective, and the effect of Ba, Bi, Ag, Fe and Mo is not so conspicuous. Zn, Cd and Pb have little or no effect.(2) Ba, Sb, Bi and Mg modify the structure of Silumin especially as chilled but their modifying power is not so strong as Na. The microstrcture of Silumin modified by these elements are not so fine as modified by Na especially as slow cooled.(3) Ba, Sb, Bi and Mg make the casting surface of Silumin like toad's skin which is disliked by founder. This phenomenon is a result of feeble modification in which Al dendrites grow rectangular to the casting surface.

A 10-year-old, neutered male Labrador retriever presented with progressive left hind lameness. Ultrasonography revealed large, subcutaneous, ovoid cysts around the stifle joint. Radiographic and computed tomographic images revealed periosteal reaction of the distal femur. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a large cyst that was hypointense in T1-weighted images, hyperintense in T2-weighted images and had a thin lining that was enhanced by intravenous gadonium injection. The cyst communicated with the joint cavity and other small cysts around the joint. Histopathology of an excisional biopsy specimen led to diagnosis of ganglion cyst. This report provides MR images of a ganglion cyst in a canine stifle.

The yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus is considered as a potential alternative to Saccharomyces cerevisiae in producing ethanol as a biofuel. In this study, we investigated the ethanol fermentation properties of novel K. marxianus strain DMB1, isolated from bagasse hydrolysates. This strain utilized sorbitol as well as various pentoses and hexoses as single carbon sources under aerobic conditions and produced ethanol from glucose in hydrolysates of the Japanese cedar at 42 °C. Reference strains K. marxianus NBRC1777 and S. cerevisiae BY4743 did not assimilate sorbitol or ferment lignocellulosic hydrolysates to ethanol at this temperature. Thus strain DMB1 appears to be optimal for producing bioethanol at high temperatures, and might provide a valuable means of increasing the efficiency of ethanol fermentation.

Surgical treatment for degenerative spinal disorders is controversial, although lumbar fusion is considered an acceptable option for disabling lower back pain. Patients underwent instrumented minimally invasive anterior lumbar interbody fusion (mini-ALIF) using a retroperitoneal approach except for requiring multilevel fusions, severe spinal canal stenosis, high-grade spondylolisthesis, and a adjacent segments disorders. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and radiographs of 142 patients who received mini-ALIF for L4-5 degenerative lumbar disorders between 1998 and 2010. We compared preoperative and postoperative clinical data and radiographic measurements, including the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, visual analog scale (VAS) score for back and leg pain, disc height (DH), whole lumbar lordosis (WL), and vertebral wedge angle (WA). The mean follow-up period was 76 months. The solid fusion rate was 90.1% (128/142 patients). The average length of hospital stay was 6.9 days (range, 3–21 days). The mean blood loss was 63.7 ml (range, 10–456 ml). The mean operation time was 155.5 min (range, 96–280 min). The postoperative JOA and VAS scores for back and leg pain were improved compared with the preoperative scores. Radiological analysis showed significant postoperative improvements in DH, WL, and WA, and the functional and radiographical outcomes improved significantly after 2 years. The 2.8% complication rate included cases of wound infection, liquorrhea, vertebral body fractures, and a misplaced cage that required revision. Mini-ALIF was found to be associated with improved clinical results and radiographic findings for L4-5 disorders. A retroperitoneal approach might therefore be a valuable treatment option.

Background: It is known that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) may have a therapeutic benefit in patients with heart failure (HF). However, no studies have yet evaluated the possible interaction of statins and angiotensin-II receptor blockers (ARBs) on left ventricular (LV) function in patients with HF. We hypothesized that statins might alter the effect of ARBs on cardiac function in patients with HF. Methods and Results: We prospectively randomized patients with chronic HF who received the ARB, losartan (LOS group), or the statin, simvastatin (SIM), in combination with LOS (SIM+LOS group) at our hospitals and assessed before and after treatment for 6 months. Although no significant improvement of HF symptoms as evaluated by the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification was observed in the LOS group, HF symptoms in the SIM+LOS group significantly improved. The percent increase of LV ejection fraction after treatment in the SIM+LOS group was significantly larger than in the LOS group. Furthermore, the plasma brain natriuretic peptide level was significantly lower after treatment in the SIM+LOS group than in the LOS group. Conclusions: Combined statin and ARB therapy significantly improves both symptoms and LV function over time in patients with HF. Thus, the combination of an ARB with a statin may be a useful therapeutic strategy for HF. (Circ J 2011; 75: 589-595)

Field tests were done at Onikobe and Minamikayabe geothermal sites and the effect of flow velocity on flow-assisted corrosion damage was clarified as follows: Corrosion rates of stainless steels were very small in the alkaline liquids of Onikobe brine A and Minamikayabe brine, and the flow effect was also very small. The rates of mild steels were large in short test duration, but decreased to 0.01mm/y after 46 hours. The flow velocity at which corrosion rates of mild steels reached to the maximum was larger in Minamikayabe geothermal brine than in Onikobe brine A, because the former contained hard solid particles and less dissolved oxygen than the latter. In Onikobe acid geothermal brine B, corrosion rates of mild steels increased with velocity at 0-0.5m/s, but were constant between 0.5m/s and 4.1m/s. However, in case that the brine contained 5mg/l dissolved oxygen, the rates increased with velocity beyond 0.5m/s.

Expert players and/or expert coaches have a large stock of experiential knowledge, including knowledge of movement-related causality. We attempted to extract experiential knowledge of movement-related causality in baseball pitching from expert players and coaches with sufficient creditability. Verbal data collected in a previous study (Matsuo et al. 2010) using semi-structured interviews with four former professional baseball pitchers and seven expert baseball coaches were used for this study. The data had been categorized on the basis of a wide variety of coaching points. A matrix of co-occurrence based on the verbal data was used to calculate the strength of association between pairs of categories. In the process of the calculation, we employed the matrix calculation utilized in the Dematel method to count indirect associations. The distances among categories, calculated on the basis of co-occurrence probability, were used to assess the creditability of the verbal data. The categories were mapped into three-dimensional space using the least squares method, based on the distances. The associations of categories were extracted as highly trustworthy when the root mean squared error between the original distances and the mapped distances was below 10%. Among the extracted associations, the direction of causality was added to the associations that expressed the causality explicitly among the verbal data. The major selected causalities were as follows:1)  Moving forward before placing weight on the pivot foot sufficiently opens the trunk earlier and leads to insufficient weight being placed on the stride foot.2)  An inadequate take-back action, especially excessive horizontal abduction and elbow extension, limits the flexible arm movement around throwing-side ear and leads to lower shoulder abduction. In addition, it makes the trunk open earlier.3)  Excessive lead elbow extension during the stride phase makes the trunk open earlier. How the lead-arm is pulled towards the trunk also affects trunk rotation.4)  Bending the neck at any point leads to inadequate trunk rotation.

Cask-storage is the best method for storing spent fuels at a reactor site. It is necessary to confirm the integrity of a cask subjected to impact load caused by cask mishandling drop accident because it is one of the technical issues to be considered in the safety analysis for cask and storage house. In this paper, an evaluation method of the dynamic interaction between cask and floor of the Storage facility Subjected to impact load is proposed. Firstly, the cask drop tests onto the reinforced concrete slab representing floor of the storage facility were conducted. Test results showed that the structural integrity of the cask was maintained even under impact load due to free drop caused by mishandling of cask. Secondly, drop analysis was performed using a finite element method analysis code considering concrete model developed at our laboratory, and compared with the experimental results. As a result, the applicability of this code for drop impact analysis of the cask was confirmed.

本研究では中学, 高校生の友人関係における「自己表明」および「他者の表明を望む気持ち」の2側面に関わる心理的要因を発達的な観点から検討した。中学, 高校生721名を対象に質問紙調査を実施し, 因子分析により, 2側面に関わる心理的要因として「安心感」「配慮・熟慮」「率直さへの価値感」「スキル不安」「支配欲求」の5つが抽出された。これらの心理的要因が「自己表明」および「他者の表明を望む気持ち」に及ぼす影響を分析した結果,(1) 中学, 高校生の男女共にほぼすべての「自己表明」および「他者の表明を望む気持ち」に「率直さへの価値感」が深く関わる。(2) 全体を通して「意見の表明」および「不満・要求の表明」の低さの背景に「スキル不安」がある。(3) 高校生では, ほぼすべての「自己表明」に「安心感」の影響があり, 高校生の女子では「他者の表明を望む気持ち」にも関連している。 (4) 「不満・要求の表明」の背景に女子では「配慮・熟慮」, 男子では「支配欲求」があることが示された。これらの結果から, 自己肯定感, 自己信頼感が2側面を共に支える重要な要因であること, 2側面のあり方を支える心理面の発達的な違いが明らかになった。

A set of 300 bacterial strains isolated from various extreme environments were screened for the presence of cellulase activity on CMC agar plates. Phylogenetic analysis of the positive strain, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolates were clustered within Firmicutes and Actinobacteria. A majority (17) of the isolates were identified as Bacillus, Paenibacillus, and Lysinibacillus sp., and the remaining three were identified as Arthobacter, Rhodococcus, and Bhargavaea cecembensis. Among the 20 positive isolates, 6 were evaluated for the production of cellulases on five different cellulosic substrates. Two isolates, B. cecembensis and Bacillus sp., based on maximum enzyme production on all cellulosic substrates, especially CMC and rice straw, were evaluated in terms of enzyme properties and kinetics. The enzymes of these two isolates are found to be active over broad range of pH and temperature. Such thermostable enzymes facilitate the development of efficient and cost-effective forms of the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process converting lignocellulosic biomass into biofuels and value-added products.
