Using panel data gathered from 16 regions of the Philippines for the period 2009-11, this paper investigates the relationship between tourism and crime. The findings of the study show that the relation between tourism and crime may largely depend on the characteristics of visitors and the types of crime. For all types of crime and their aggregate, no significant correlation between the crime rate (defined as the number of crime cases divided by population) and total tourist arrivals is found. However, a statistically significant positive relation is found between foreign tourism and robbery and theft cases as well as between overseas Filipino tourism and robbery. On the other hand, domestic tourism is not significantly correlated with any of the four types of crimes. These results, together with a strong evidence of the negative relationship between crime and the crime clearance efficiency, present much opportunity for policy intervention in order to minimize the crime externality of the country's tourism-led development strategy.

In order to achieve high-speed and large-capacity communication, efficient use of frequency resources even over different wireless communication systems is an important issue. We previously proposed the spectrum superposing scheme using subcarrier transmission power assignment (STPA) and blind adaptive array (BAA). Even when multiple systems use the same frequency band, the secondary system enables the both receivers to mitigate inter-system interference by STPA-BAA. However, STPA-BAA has a problem that the operational region of the secondary system is limited due to low-level subcarriers. This paper attempts to resolve this issue by introducing subcarrier modulation adaptation. It can effectively expand the operational region of our proposed approach even in the low signal-to-noise-power-ratio (SNR) situation.

ヤマカガシは頸腺と呼ばれる特殊な防御器官を持ち、強い皮膚毒を持つヒキガエルを食べることによりその毒成分を取り込んでこの器官に溜める。また、特異的な防御ディスプレイを行って、その毒を効果的に捕食回避に利用する。本研究では、合計18種のユウダ亜科のヘビが同様の防御器官を持つことを確認し、それらの形態は多様化していることを明らかにした。また、分子系統解析の結果、頸腺システムは1回だけ進化してきたことを示した。さらに、ミミズ食に移行した一部のヘビでは、頸腺毒をヒキガエルではなくホタルから取り入れている可能性が示された。

Background: While ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is a recognized risk factor for skin cancer, associations are complex and few studies have allowed a direct comparison of exposure profiles associated with cutaneous melanoma, basal-cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) within a single population.Methods: We examined associations between UV exposures and skin cancer risk in a nested case-control study within E3N, a prospective cohort of 98,995 French women born in 1925–1950. In 2008, a lifetime UV exposure questionnaire was sent to all reported skin cancer cases and three controls per case, which were matched on age, county of birth, and education. Analyses were performed using conditional logistic regression and included 366 melanoma cases, 1,027 BCC cases, 165 SCC cases, and 3,647 controls.Results: A history of severe sunburns <25 years was associated with increased risks of all skin cancers (melanoma: OR 2.7; BCC: OR 1.7; SCC: OR 2.0 for ≥6 sunburns vs. none), while sunburns ≥25 years were associated with BCC and SCC only. While high-sun protection factor sunscreen use before age 25 was associated with lower BCC risk (Ptrend = 0.02), use since age 25 and reapplication of sunscreen were associated with higher risks of all three types of skin cancer. There were positive linear associations between total UV score and risks of BCC (Ptrend = 0.01) and SCC (Ptrend = 0.09), but not melanoma. While recreational UV score was strongly associated with BCC, total and residential UV scores were more strongly associated with SCC.Conclusions: Melanoma, BCC, and SCC are associated with different sun exposure profiles in women.

Background: The aim of the present study was to compare the end-tidal O2 pressure (PETO2) to end-tidal CO2 pressure (PETCO2) in cardiac patients during rest and during 2 states of exercise: at anaerobic threshold (AT) and at peak. The purpose was to see which metabolic state, PETO2 or PETCO2, best correlated with exercise limitation. Methods and Results: Thirty-eight patients with left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction <40% underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX). PETO2 and PETCO2 were measured during CPX, along with peak O2 uptake (VO2), AT, slope of the increase in ventilation (VE) relative to the increase in CO2 output (VCO2) (VE vs. VCO2 slope), and the ratio of the increase in VO2 to the increase in work rate (ΔVO2/ΔWR). Both PETO2 and PETCO2 measured at AT were best correlated with peakVO2, AT, ΔVO2/ΔWR and VE vs. VCO2 slope. PETO2 at AT correlated with reduced peak VO2 (r=-0.60), reduced AT (r=-0.52), reduced ΔVO2/ΔWR (r=-0.55) and increased VE vs. VCO2 slope (r=0.74). PETCO2 at AT correlated with reduced peak VO2 (r=0.67), reduced AT (r=0.61), reduced ΔVO2/ΔWR (r=0.58) and increased VE vs. VCO2 slope (r=-0.80). Conclusions: PETCO2 and PETO2 at AT correlated with peak VO2, AT and ΔVO2/ΔWR, but best correlated with increased VE vs. VCO2 slope. PETO2 and PETCO2 at AT can be used as a prime index of impaired cardiopulmonary function during exercise in patients with LV failure.

Estuaries are subject to increasing pressures due to local human activities. In addition, global change is affecting coastal habitats. Such disturbances impinge on goods and services provided by these ecosystems. The paper is devoted to efforts to restore environmental quality in some industrialised estuaries during the few past decades. It then compares strategies to recover damaged habitats and methods to restore lost ecological functionalities. Case studies are taken from the Seine in France, the Humber in England, the Scheldt in Belgium and the Netherlands and the Elbe in Germany. The article retraces briefly the morphological and ecological changes which have been inflicted on the estuaries over the last century. It puts into light actions which have been successful in improving their ecological functioning. Through comparing the various restoration schemes, policies are assessed. Details are given on efforts made lately in the Seine estuary which has lost more than 90% of its intertidal areas in about 150 years. Recently, losses due to an extension of harbour facilities in le Havre (“Port 2000”) have been compensated by the rehabilitation of a former mud flat and various constructions such as an artificial island for birds.The discussion confronts the present management of tidal estuaries to future challenges, including global changes. Such changes will not only include global warming and its consequences (sea level rise, biogeochemical cycles alteration...), but also socio-economic adjustments and a possible geo-political reorganization expected to take place in relation to increased harbour activities and the increasing need for more space dedicated to natural habitats and leisure activities (sports, tourism...).The conclusion puts together the various approaches from the considered European estuaries. Resting on a rigorous scientific approach, it proposes a synthetic approach to restoration: 1. Efficient procedures of socio-ecological evaluation, 2. A methodology to assess the ecological quality of systems considered, 3. Rigorous monitoring programs, resting on a relevant choice of indicators, and 4. Participation of local communities, in order to define strategies compatible with conservation and sustainable development at the local, regional and European levels.

In this work, a simple method was developed to simultaneously fabricate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and modify their surfaces with recognition functional groups for colorimetric detection of Cu2+ ions. To prepare the AgNPs with proper functional group on their surface for detection of Cu2+ ions, photochemical reaction was employed and a photoactive species of tyrosine (Tyr) was used to trigger the photoreduction of AgNPs, while the oxidized Tyr (TyrOx) was used to functionalize the AgNPs surface at the same time. To understand the behaviors, the prepared color AgNPs colloidal solution was characterized by UV-visible spectrometer, FT-IR spectrometer, dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Based on DFT calculation results, TyrOx was adsorbed on the surface of AgNPs by the quinone ring and its functional group of amino acid was freely exposed to the aqueous media for rapid interaction of Cu2+ ions. Based on detection of different metal ions, TyrOx@AgNPs were selective to interact with Cu2+ ions through formation of highly stable Cu2+-TyrOx@AgNPs complexes. The evidence in formation of Cu2+-TyrOx@AgNPs complex could be obtained through the red shift of the surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) band of TyrOx@AgNPs located at 557 nm, which gives a color change from light yellow to brown color allowing visual identification of Cu2+ ions for rapid screening purposes. For quantitative analysis, a band intensity ratio of A557/(A404–A557) was constructed to correlate with the concentration of Cu2+ ions. A linear range up to 10 μM with a detection limit close to 150 nM was found.

A link between certain infectious microorganisms and an increased risk of atherosclerotic disease has been suggested. By analyzing the data of subjects who had undergone general health-screening tests, a possible association between carotid atherosclerosis and seropositivity of antibody against hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been previously reported. In the present study, a possible link between carotid atherosclerosis and HCV core protein positivity was assessed, because it is postulated to be a better marker of viremia and thus persistent infection. Of the 1992 enrolled subjects, 496 (25%) had carotid artery plaque, and 25 (1.3%) were positive for HCV core protein. Carotid artery plaque was positive in 480/1967 (24%) and 16/25 (64%) of the core protein-negative and core protein-positive subjects, respectively (p<0.0001 by χ2 test). Serum concentrations of transaminases were higher in core protein-positive subjects, but albumin concentrations were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that HCV core protein positivity is an independent predictor of carotid plaque with an odds ratio of 5.61 (95% confidence interval 2.06-15.26, p<0.001). These data further support the possible link between persistent HCV infection and carotid atherosclerosis in the subjects without severe liver dysfunction. (Circ J 2003; 67: 26 - 30)

This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary fenugreek seed extract (FSE) supplementation on egg production, egg quality, blood profiles, cecal microflora, and excreta noxious gas emission in laying hens. A total of 384 laying hens (26-weeks old, Hyline-brown) were fed three different levels of FSE (0, 0.05, and 0.1%) in a cornsoybean diet for 6 weeks. The inclusion of FSE in the laying hen diet did not affect egg production, feed intake, or feed conversion among treatments; however, egg weight, eggshell breaking strength, eggshell thickness, and yolk color increased in FSE-fed groups (linear, P<0.05). Supplemental FSE decreased the serum total cholesterol concentration, whereas the HDL-cholesterol concentration increased in the FSE fed-groups (linear, P<0.05). FSE led to an increase in cecal Lactobacillus number (linear, P<0.05), and a decrease in Escherichia coli number (quadratic, P<0.05) and excreta ammonia gas emission (linear, P<0.05). These results suggest that the addition of FSE does not increase egg production, but may affect egg quality, serum total- and HDL-cholesterol concentration, and cecal microflora. FSE also decreased ammonia gas emission in laying hen excreta.

Inflammatory colorectal polyps (ICRPs) are frequently observed in miniature dachshunds in Japan and treated by prednisolone and immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine and leflunomide. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the treatment efficacy, such as response rate, response interval, recurrence rate, and adverse events between cyclosporine and leflunomide. While the response rates were significantly higher in dogs treated with leflunomide, no significant differences were observed in the response interval or recurrence rate. Two of the 11 dogs treated with leflunomide showed hematological or gastrointestinal adverse events, while no dog treated with cyclosporine showed any adverse events. A case-controlled prospective study to compare the treatment efficacy of leflunomide with that of cyclosporine should be conducted.

The diversity of advanced genetic engineering techniques that have become available in recent years has enabled a more precise manipulation of genes and genomes. Among these, bacteriophage genomes stand out as an interesting target due to their dependence on a host for replication, which previously complicated their manipulation, and due as well to the many possible fields in which they can be used. In this review, we highlight recent applications for which genetically modified bacteriophages are being employed: as phage therapy in medicine, animal industries and agricultural settings; as a source of new antimicrobials; as biosensors for research, health and environmental purposes; and as genetic engineering tools themselves.

The European Commission Horizon 2020 funded DEMOCRITOS project (2015-2017, see under democritos.esf.org) will be primary focused to prepare preliminary design of the ground, core and space demonstrators and their test benches for the mega-watt class nuclear electric space propulsion INPPS flagship (International Nuclear Power and Propulsion System). In addition programmatic, organizational and funding aspects for international cooperation related to INPPS realization are sketched. The new project includes partners from Europe, Russia and the Brazilian guest observer IEAv and is the follow-up of the mega-watt class nuclear electric propulsion European-Russian MEGAHIT project (www.megahit-eu.org). Europe already established the high power nuclear MEGAHIT and the low power nuclear (20 to 200 kW NEP) DiPoP (www.DiPoP.eu) roadmaps. Because Europe has started the implementations for INPPS flagship in the 2030-2040 timeframe, both roadmaps will be also described – from MEGAHIT the INPPS technology options, the launcher, assembly and system architecture, space mission requirements, communications and public support. In case of DiPoP it will be explained the survey of European capabilities, technical options, potential space missions and the public acceptance as well.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to evaluate the immediate effects of Mulligan fibular taping on static and dynamic postural balance in healthy subjects using computerized dynamic posturography (CDP). [Subjects and Methods] Forty-four volunteers (26 males and 18 females) aged 21 ±2 years participated in the study. The Mulligan tape was applied by a specialist in this technique. The placebo group received a treatment with a similar tape but with several cuts to avoid the fibular repositioning effect produced by Mulligan tape. Main outcome measures: The Sensory Organization Test (SOT) and the Motor Control Test (MCT) were performed by each subject at baseline and after the interventions. Outcome measures included equilibrium and strategy scores from each trial and condition of the SOT, and speed of reaction (latency period) from the MCT. [Results] Mulligan ankle taping did not have an impact on postural control during static and dynamic balance in subjects with healthy ankles when compared with placebo taping. [Conclusion] There was no difference in, equilibrium and strategy (SOT) and speed of reaction (MCT) in any of the subjects in this study. Therefore, this study suggests that Mulligan ankle taping does not have an impact on balance in healthy subjects.

Although xerostomia can cause persistent oral pain, the mechanisms underlying such pain are not well understood. To evaluate whether a phosphorylated p38 (pp38)-TRPV4 mechanism in trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons has a role in mechanical hyperalgesia of dry tongue, a rat model of dry tongue was used to study the nocifensive reflex and pp38 and TRPV4 expression in TG neurons. The head-withdrawal reflex threshold for mechanical stimulation of the tongue was significantly lower in dry-tongue rats than in sham rats. The numbers of TRPV4- and pp38-immunoreactive cells in the TG were significantly higher in dry-tongue rats than in sham rats. Many TRPV4-IR cells were also pp38-immunoreactive. The number of TRPV1-IR cells was unchanged in the TG after induction of tongue dryness. Local injection of a TRPV4 blocker attenuated tongue mechanical hypersensitivity in dry-tongue rats. Intraganglionic injection of a selective p38 MAP kinase inhibitor eliminated tongue hypersensitivity in dry-tongue rats and suppressed TRPV4 expression in TG neurons. The present findings suggest that TRPV4 activation via p38 phosphorylation in TG neurons is involved in mechanical hypersensitivity associated with dry tongue. These mechanisms may have a role in pain associated with xerostomia.

ブナ科樹木の萎凋病菌Raffaelea quercivoraに対する外国産コナラ属樹種の感受性を明らかにするため,Quercus palustris, Q. robur, Q. rubra,日本産アラカシの各種苗木に対して,多点・1点接種を行った.その結果,多点接種における対照,無処理木では枯死が確認されなかったが,接種木ではQ. rubraのみで枯死が確認され,その枯死率は42%であった.また,枯死率は樹種間で有意に異なった.1点接種の接種木においてQ. rubraの接種部横断面における変色域の割合は,アラカシのものに比べ,有意に高かった.以上の結果から,R. quercivoraは外国産のQ. rubraに対して病原性を有することが明らかとなった.

Meta-analyses have concluded that combined aerobic and high-intensity or moderate-intensity resistance exercise training has no effects on arterial stiffness. However, a recent study demonstrated that combined aerobic training and resistance training using rubber bands increases basal nitric oxide (NO) production and decreases arterial stiffness with marked reduction of body weight in obese adolescent girls. To investigate whether combined aerobic and low-intensity resistance training increases basal NO production and decreases arterial stiffness without body weight reduction in older adults, 27 healthy older individuals participated in a 6-week program as a part of the training group (mean body mass index, 21 kg/m2; walking and resistance training using one’s body weight) or the control group (22 kg/m2, asked not to modify their lifestyle). The exercise intervention increased aerobic capacity, muscle strength, and plasma concentrations of nitrite/nitrate (end products of NO) and decreased pulse wave velocity (an index of arterial stiffness) without changes in body weight. In the control group, there were no differences in these measures before and after the study period. These results suggest that combined aerobic and low-intensity resistance exercise training increases basal NO production and decreases arterial stiffness in healthy older adults.
