Industrial talc has been widely circulated in the world for a long time. The pure talc has little effects on humans, but inhalation of talc contaminated with asbestos can causes severe asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma. Herein, we represent a case of lung cancer after occupational exposure to industrial talc in the rubber manufacturing industry.

Background:Tenascin-C (TN-C) is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein that is heavily upregulated at sites of inflammation. We conducted a retrospective study to assess the utility of TN-C as a novel biomarker to predict the risk of developing coronary artery lesions (CAL) and resistance to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD).Methods and Results:We collected blood samples of 111 KD patients (IVIG-responder: 89, IVIG-resistant: 22; CAL: 8) and 23 healthy controls, and measured the serum levels of TN-C. TN-C levels on admission were significantly higher in patients than in healthy controls and in patients during convalescence after IVIG administration (69.6 vs. 20.4 vs. 39.7 ng/ml, respectively; P<0.001), and correlated positively with C-reactive protein (P<0.001), neutrophil (percentage; P=0.005), and ALT (P<0.001), and negatively with platelet count (P=0.023) and sodium level (P=0.025). On admission, TN-C levels in patients who later developed CAL were significantly higher than in those without CAL (P=0.010), and significantly higher in IVIG-resistant subjects than in IVIG-responders (P=0.003). The accuracy of TN-C testing for the prediction of IVIG resistance was comparable to that of the Kobayashi score.Conclusions:Serum TN-C could be a biomarker for predicting the risk of developing CAL and IVIG resistance during the acute phase of KD. Sperm are modified substantially in passing through both the male and the female reproductive tracts, only thereafter becoming functionally competent to fertilize eggs. Drosophila sperm become motile in the seminal vesicle; after ejaculation, they interact with seminal fluid proteins and undergo biochemical changes on their surface while they are stored in the female sperm storage organs. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these maturation processes remain largely unknown. Here, we focused on Drosophila Neprilysin genes, which are the fly orthologs of the mouse Membrane metallo-endopeptidase-like 1 (Mmel1) gene. While Mmel1 knockout male mice have reduced fertility without abnormality in either testis morphology or sperm motility, there are inconsistent results regarding the association of any Neprilysin gene with male fertility in Drosophila. We examined the association of the Nep1–5 genes with male fertility by RNAi and found that Nep4 gene function is specifically required in germline cells. To investigate this in more detail, we induced mutations in the Nep4 gene by the CRISPR/Cas9 system and isolated two mutants, both of which were viable and female fertile, but male sterile. The mutant males had normal-looking testes and sperm; during copulation, sperm were transferred to females and stored in the seminal receptacle and paired spermathecae. However, following sperm transfer and storage, three defects were observed for Nep4 mutant sperm. First, sperm were quickly discarded by the females; second, the proportion of eggs fertilized was significantly lower for mutant sperm than for control sperm; and third, most eggs laid did not initiate development after sperm entry. Taking these observations together, we conclude that the Nep4 gene is essential for sperm function following sperm transfer to females.

We analyzed the genotypes of three pregnant females and their litters to investigate the phenomenon of multiple paternity in wild raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) using 17 microsatellite markers. If a female has mated with only one male during estrus, then the maximum number of paternal alleles will not exceed two among littermates with the same father. The results revealed two out of three litters had three or four paternal alleles at one or five microsatellite loci. Therefore, the female had mated with more than one male during estrus. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report the possibility of multiple paternity in wild raccoon dogs.

近年のコンピューターとモデル開発の進歩により、全球ストーム解像モデルの時代が始まり、それに伴って気象や気候予測が一変する可能性を秘めている。本研究では、この新しいクラスのモデルを検証するという一般的なテーマの中で、9つの全球ストーム解像モデルについて、熱帯低気圧(TC)をシミュレートする能力を評価した。その結果、大まかにいえば、これらのモデルは現実的な熱帯低気圧を再現し、熱帯低気圧の強度の正確なシミュレーションを可能とするなど、全球モデルの長年の課題が解消されていることが示された。一方、TCはモデルの設計に強く影響され、全てのモデルはTCの数、強度、大きさ、構造に関して独自のバイアスを持っている。いくつかのモデルは他のモデルよりも優れたTCをシミュレートするが、全ての点で優れたモデルが存在するわけではなかった。全体的な結果は、全球ストーム解像モデルがTC予測の新時代を切り拓くことが可能であることを示しているが、その可能性を最大限に引き出すためには改良が必要である。

多くの興味深い資源共有ネットワークがアメリカ合衆国では興っている。なかでも最も先進的なネットワークはオハイオリンク・プロジェクトである。本稿ではオハイオリンクの特筆すべき特徴を述べた。このプロジェクトはオハイオ州の単科大学と総合大学54校の図書館が, 2000万冊以上の書誌所蔵オンライン目録に接続し, 直接利用者主導の貸し出し, 拡大しつつある参考調査用フルテキスト・データベース, 電子論文供給, 州規模コンソーシアム・ライセンスによる電子雑誌へのアクセスが含まれている。組織問題 (システム・アーキテクチャー, スタッフ配置, 管理と財務) については, オハイオリンク強化計画にもとずいて, すなわち利用者インターフェース・ソフトウエアの次世代開発と音声, 映像及び数値データをもつデジタル・ファイル調整のためのシステム拡張を含めた議論をした。合衆国内にあるそのほかの州及び地域資源共有の状況に論及した。本稿ではこの分散システムの長所と短所を評価し要約し, これは合衆国内の公高等教育の分散構造を写し出している。州規模ネットワークは特定地域の学生と教員の実際的な需要に対して良質の情報源を提供する効果的な応答である。しかしながら全米情報インフラストラクチャーにおけるいくつかの主要問題には取り組めていない。北米図書館界の海外資料調達の凋落はその最たるものである。

Aim: Weight change could have many health outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association between weight change and mortality risk due to total cardiovascular disease (CVD), ischemic heart disease (IHD), and stroke among Japanese. Methods: We used Suita Study data from 4,746 people aged 30-79 years in this prospective cohort study. Weight change was defined as the difference between baseline weight and weight at age 20. We used Cox proportional hazards models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of total CVD, IHD, and stroke mortality for 1) participants with a weight change (>10, 5 to 10, -5 to -10, and <-10 kg) compared to those with stable weight (-4.9 to 4.9 kg) and 2) participants who moved from one body mass index category (underweight, normal weight, or overweight) to another compared to those with normal weight at age 20 and baseline. Results: Within a median follow-up period of 19.9 years, the numbers of total CVD, IHD, and stroke mortality were 268, 132, and 79, respectively. Weight loss of >10 kg was associated with the increased risk of total CVD mortality 2.07 (1.29, 3.32) and stroke mortality 3.02 (1.40, 6.52). Moving from normal weight at age 20 to underweight at baseline was associated with the increased risk of total CVD, IHD, and stroke mortality: 1.76 (1.12, 2.77), 2.10 (1.13, 3.92), and 2.25 (1.05, 4.83), respectively. Conclusion: Weight loss, especially when moving from normal to underweight, was associated with the increased risk of CVD mortality.

Nasu-Hakola disease (NHD) is a rare autosomal recessive leukoencephalopathy caused by a loss-of-function mutation of either TYROBP (DAP12) or TREM2 expressed in microglia. A rare variant of the TREM2 gene encoding p.Arg47His causes a 3-fold increase in the risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). A recent study demonstrated that a rare coding variant p.Ser209Phe in the ABI family member 3 (ABI3) gene, a regulator of actin cytoskeleton organization, confers risk of developing of LOAD, although the pattern of ABI3 expression in AD and NHD brains with relevance to microglial pathology remains to be characterized. We investigated the cell type-specific expression of ABI3 in the brains derived from four non-neurological controls (NC), ten AD and five NHD cases by immunohistochemistry. We identified an intense ABI3 immunoreactivity chiefly on a subset of microglia with ramified or amoeboid morphology located in the grey matter and the white matter of the frontal cortex and the hippocampus of NC, AD, and NHD cases. The immunolabeled area of ABI3-positive microglia was not significantly different among NC, AD, and NHD cases due to great variability from case to case. The clusters of ABI3-immunoreactive microglia were found exclusively in AD brains and they were associated with amyloid plaques. Although these observations do not actively support the view that ABI3-immunoreactive microglia play a central role in the development of leukoencephalopathy in NHD brains and the neurodegeneration in AD brains, the intense expression of ABI3 on microglia might regulate their migration under conditions of health and disease in the central nervous system (CNS).

Background: Limited data on electronic cigarette prevalence, patterns and settings of use are available from several European countries.Methods: Within the TackSHS project, a face-to-face survey was conducted in 2017-2018 in 12 European countries (Bulgaria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain). Overall, 11,876 participants, representative of the population aged ≥15 years in each country, provided information on electronic cigarette.Results: 2.4% (95% confidence interval, CI: 2.2-2.7) of the subjects (2.5% among men and 2.4% among women; 0.4% among never, 4.4% among current- and 6.5% among ex-smokers) reported current use of electronic cigarette, ranging from 0.6% in Spain to 7.2% in England. Of the 272 electronic cigarette users, 52.6% were dual users (i.e., users of both electronic and conventional cigarettes) and 58.8% used liquids with nicotine. In all, 65.1% reported using electronic cigarette in at least one indoor setting where smoking is forbidden, in particular in workplaces (34.9%), and bars and restaurants (41.5%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that electronic cigarette use was lower among older individuals (p for trend <0.001) and higher among individuals with high level of education (p for trend 0.040). Participants from countries with higher tobacco cigarette prices more frequently reported electronic cigarette use (odds ratio 3.62; 95% CI: 1.80-7.30).Conclusions: Considering the whole adult population of these 12 European countries, more than 8.3 million people use electronic cigarettes. The majority of users also smoked conventional cigarettes, used electronic cigarettes with nicotine and consumed electronic cigarettes in smoke-free indoor areas.

In vitro maturation (IVM) is an important reproductive technology used to produce embryos in vitro. However, the developmental potential of oocytes sourced for IVM is markedly lower than those matured in vivo. Previously, NAD+-elevating treatments have improved oocyte quality and embryo development in cattle and mice, suggesting that NAD+ is important during oocyte maturation. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of nicotinic acid (NA), nicotinamide (NAM) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) on oocyte maturation and subsequent embryo development. Porcine oocytes from small antral follicles were matured for 44 h in a defined maturation medium supplemented with NA, NAM and resveratrol or NMN. Mature oocytes were artificially activated and presumptive zygotes cultured for 7 days. Additionally, oocytes were matured without treatment then cultured for 7 days with NMN. Supplementing the IVM medium with NA improved maturation and blastocyst formation while NAM supplementation improved cleavage rates compared with untreated controls. Supplementing the IVM or embryo culture media with NMN had no effect on maturation or embryo development. The results show that supplementing the maturation medium with NA and NAM improved maturation and developmental potential of porcine oocytes.

Precipitation chemistry was observed at the remote background site at Ryori, Ofunato in northeastern Japan, from 1976 to 2011 as the part of World Meteorological Organization-Global Atmospheric Watch (WMO-GAW). During this period, anthropogenic emissions in East Asia varied widely, which affected the precipitation chemistry. The precipitation amount also affects the wet deposition amount. Thus, to eliminate the effect of the precipitation amount, we used the ratio of nitrate (NO3−) to non-sea-salt sulfate (nss-SO42−) concentration in precipitation on an equivalent basis (Ratio). The historical trend of NO3− and nss-SO42− concentrations in precipitation was not clear; however, Ratio showed a strong increase in the 1990s, a sudden drop in 2001, and an increase again after 2007. Based on the analysis of the historical emission dataset, the increases in Ratio during the 1990s and after 2007 were attributed to anthropogenic emission changes in Japan and China. The drop in Ratio in 2001 was explained by the massive SO2 release from Miyakejima volcano from mid-August 2000, rather than by anthropogenic emissions. The 36-year historical record analysis of precipitation chemistry at Ryori detected both anthropogenic and natural emission changes and indicated the transition from local to transboundary air pollution in Japan.

Numerous wetlands, including the world's two largest contiguous wetlands, lie along the free-flowing Paraná and Paraguay Rivers that travel the length of subtropical South America (SSA) region. These wetlands are floodplains that are inundated with rising river water in flood events; their morphology and area are highly changeable with flooding extent. The long-term variability of methane emission from this wetland hotspot and its sensitivity to meteorological conditions are not well known. We herein explore this unknown using space-based estimates of methane flux for SSA region between 2009 and 2015 along with data of water balance. We find that methane emission from this region coherently varies with precipitation and inundation areal extent.

Objective Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are widely used in patients with hematologic malignancies. However, the risks of PICC-related complications during chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are not fully understood. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of 128 adult patients with AML who received induction therapy by way of PICC insertion between 2012 and 2019. Results The median duration of PICC insertion was 30 days. The incidence rate of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) was 2.4% at 30 days, and women were more likely to suffer from CRBSI than men. Local reactions at the insertion site were observed in 56 patients; however, these events did not predict CRBSI. The incidence rates of catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) were 1.6% at 30 days. Obesity put patients at an increased risk for CRT. Unexpected PICC removal occurred in 59 patients, and women were at a higher risk of catheter removal than men. Conclusion Low PICC-related complication rates, possibly associated with high rates of catheter removal, were observed during intensive chemotherapy for AML. Women and obese patients require careful monitoring of their PICC. Procedures to achieve appropriate PICC removal without increasing the complication rate need to be considered.

This study describes a new species of the subfamily Coelotinae (Agelenidae) from Kinki district, central Japan, under the name of Coelotes nojimai sp. nov. It resembles C. yodoensis Nishikawa, 1977 and C. nagaraensis Nishikawa, 2009 but is characterized by a male palp with a large and greatly curved conductor and slender spermathecae in the internal genitalia of female specimens. The morphological differences and distribution ranges of these three species have been discussed in detail. In addition, the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mt-COI) partial sequences of the new species have been analyzed and documented for future use.

Post-polio syndrome refers to the physical and psychological sequelae caused by poliovirus infection. For this reason, according to which the emotional and sensorimotor sphere is affected, we consider a biobehavioural approach based on education and therapeutic exercise to be necessary. The aim of this case report is to evaluate the effect of a biobehavioural approach in a patient with post-polio syndrome and low back pain. We describe a 57-year-old man with post-polio syndrome and low back pain following a fall at the end of February 2020. The pain, disability and lack of functionality caused by both processes led him to contact a physiotherapy service. A therapeutic planning was carried out for 3 months, where a biobehavioural approach based on therapeutic exercise and education, with an assessment and three face-to-face sessions which were complemented by online follow-up and finalised due to the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic in a telerehabilitation approach. It was organised in two phases; the initial phase lasted 2 weeks with the aim of reducing the symptoms of the lumbar region, and the advanced phase in which the aim was to improve his physical condition. During the three-month intervention, four assessments were conducted (Pre, at 4 weeks, at 8 weeks and at 12 weeks). At follow-up, improvements in functional and psychological variables were obtained. This case suggests that a biobehavioural approach through telerehabilitation was a useful option in this reported case and could be an option of treatment to improve psychological, physical and functional variables in this patient.

Identical twin experiments with and without topography are conducted with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in an idealized framework to investigate the impact of topography on the initial error growth associated with moist convection. A topography is set as a single Gaussian shape mountain with a peak height of about 1000 m. Both experiments show clear diurnal cycles, while moist convection develops earlier and organizes to a larger size in the experiment with topography. To evaluate the initial error growth, a metric referred to as moist difference total energy (MDTE) is proposed to represent the differences between the two simulations in twin experiments. The horizontal spatial distribution, temporal evolution, and horizontal wavenumber space of the MDTE suggest that the error growth is greatly dominated by the different features of convection development between the two experiments. The analysis based on individual cloud areas shows that the convective clouds developing over the mountain have smaller MDTE at the early stage of development.

The magnetic and electronic properties of CeOInS2 and their influence on phase transition were analyzed in this study. High-temperature XRD measurements of CeOInS2 revealed that orthorhombic CeOInS2 transformed into tetragonal CeOInS2 at a high temperature of 636 K. The transport properties of CeOInS2 showed semiconducting behavior, with a larger temperature dependence of electronic resistivity in the tetragonal phase compared to that in the orthorhombic phase. Unlike structurally similar Ce(O,F)BiS2 superconductors that show long-range magnetic ordering, CeOInS2 neither exhibited superconductive transition nor long-range magnetic ordering at temperatures between 2 and 300 K.
