Aim: The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is recommended for lowering blood pressure (BP). Our previous single-arm trial revealed that the Japanese cuisine-based DASH (J-DASH) diet (supplying NaCl 8.0 g per day) reduced BP and improved cardiometabolic biomarkers. The present study's primary objective was to test the feasibility of the J-DASH diet based on its effects on the BP and BP variability of subjects with untreated high-normal BP or stage 1 hypertension. Methods: The 6-month study period was held from December 2015 to August 2016. The participants were recruited through advertisements in local newspapers and our website and from among randomized participants at Yamaguchi University Hospital. The 2-month treatments included the following: the J-DASH-1 diet 1×/day or the J-DASH-2 diet providing a fish hamburger-patty 2×/day (5 days/week respectively). The control group consumed their usual diets. For the subsequent 4 months, all participants consumed their usual diets. The main outcome measure was the feasibility of the J-DASH diet. We also collected the data of clinic BP and home BP (by automatic BP monitor), cardiometabolic biomarkers, and lifestyle and psychosocial parameters during the intervention phase. We examined behavior changes throughout the study period, and the diets' safety. Results: Fifty-one participants were recruited; following screening, 48 met the inclusion criteria and were randomized by central allocation. Eight participants were eliminated based on exclusion criteria, and the 40 participants were randomly allocated to the J-DASH 1 and J-DASH 2 groups (n=13 each) and the usual-diet group (n=14). The participants' mean age was 50 years, and 44% were women. The three groups' clinic BP values were not significantly different, but the home BP values were lower in the J-DASH 1 group and lowest in the J-DASH 2 group compared to the usual-diet group and differed significantly among the three groups throughout the study period (p<0.0001). The home BP variability was significantly lower in the J-DASH groups compared to the usual-diet group throughout the study period (p<0.01). The other indices including fish oil showed little differences among the groups throughout the study period. Conclusions: The J-DASH diet was feasible to improve home BP and stabilize its variability, and it did so more effectively than the participants' usual diets.

Plant protection against soil-borne diseases has been a challenge in horticultural production of Ericaceae for a long time. We tested the hypothesis that ericoid mycorrhizal fungi (ERMF) control root pathogens. Isolates of ERMF previously obtained from Calluna vulgaris and Rhododendron hirsutum were selected based on growth inhibiting activity against Oomycetes in dual agar plate tests. In addition, we assessed their impact on economically important Pythium spec. and Phytophthora cinnamomi in sterile Rhododendron plantlets in a liquid culture system, which is suitable for continuous observations of the infection process. For this purpose, rooted cuttings of micro-propagated Rhododendron plantlets were transferred to a mineral solution and subsequently inoculated with either Oidiodendron maius or the ERMF isolates. Before the root pathogens were applied to the experimental system, the symbioses were established over a four-week period. Mycorrhizal development, pathogen infection sites and development in mycorrhizal plants and non-mycorrhizal control plants were assessed microscopically. The root-colonising intensity of the tested ERMF differed considerably, but each of the applied ERMF impaired external pathogen mycelium and reduced pathogenic infections. A complete reduction was achieved at higher ERMF colonisation levels. The failure of symbiosis formation allowed pathogens to infect and spread. The quantification data concerning mycorrhiza frequencies and extramatrical hyphal nets provided details for a discussion on the suppressive effects of ERMF on the pathogens. The tested ERMF confer at least a localized protection from pathogen attack through suppression prior to infection. It is now to prove, whether these biocontrol effects will also be expressed in pot experiments.

近年の東アジア諸国の飛躍的な経済発展と共に,東アジア域内の国際海上物流の世界市場に占める割合と重要性は益々高まってきた。かつて東アジア国際海上物流ハブの役割を果たしていた日本の主要港湾の国際コンテナ貨物取扱量は低迷を続けている。日本の港湾を発着地とする基幹航路は減少しており,最近は特に韓国の釜山港を外貿に利用している西日本の日本海側港湾も増加している。このような日本港湾の韓国フィーダー航路化が進んでいる中,本稿では北部九州と山口地方の外貿コンテナ物流における韓国港湾の利用度についてその動向を調査分析する。特に北九州港・博多港・下関港の3港湾を選定し,韓国港湾を外貿に利用する3港貨物の割合,積み替えコンテナ量,実入りコンテナ量などの動向を分析した。分析に用いたデータは,主に韓国関税庁の貿易統計照会システムTRASSを追跡して得られた最近13年間の日韓間外貿コンテナ貨物量である。なお,日韓両国の統計を用いるため,各々の港湾統計の整合性を確認した上,併用を試みている。分析の結果,3港の外貿コンテナ貨物の韓国港湾利用度は,下関港-博多港-北九州港の順に高いが,北九州港の韓国港湾利用度が急速に伸びている傾向を確認した。また,北九州港と博多港の輸出入別外貿コンテナ貨物の韓国港湾積み替えが増加している傾向と,空コンテナ量が多いことを観測した。本稿の分析結果は北部九州・山口地域の日韓国際海上コンテナ物流の現状分析と共に,今後の九州地域を中心とする国際海上コンテナ貨物量の推移を予測する際に参考になると期待している。

[Purpose] The foundations of the scoliosis specific and evidence-based physiotherapy program according to Schroth is the original the Lehnert-Schroth (LS) classification which is still in use today. The purpose of this paper is to test the reliability of the LS classification system, using clinical and radiological images of scoliosis patients as classified by specialist experienced clinicians. [Participants and Methods] A list of 40 pictures of X-Rays and a list of 40 clinical pictures (all posterior trunk images) of patients with idiopathic scoliosis were provided by the second author. Three specialist professional physiotherapists or orthotists rated all clinical and radiological pictures according to these two patterns of the LS classification. [Results] The intra-observer Kappa value was 0.90 (clinical) and 1.00 (x-rays). The inter-observer Kappa values at average was 0.65 (clinical) and 0.71 (x-rays). [Conclusion] For the application of classifying the patients when prescribing postural advice and exercises from the Schroth program the LS-classification seems an easy to use and highly reliable tool. This test demonstrated sufficient reliability with respect to the x-rays, but the tests of the clinical pictures alone, demonstrated fair levels of reliability, which indicates that it is an appropriate tool for physiotherapists when an x-ray is not available.

Background:Little is known about the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the outbreak response measures on door-to-balloon time (D2B). This study examined both D2B and clinical outcomes of patients with STEMI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI).Methods and Results:This was a retrospective study of 303 STEMI patients who presented directly or were transferred to a tertiary hospital in Singapore for PPCI from October 2019 to March 2020. We compared the clinical outcomes of patients admitted before (BOR) and during (DOR) the COVID-19 outbreak response. The study outcomes were in-hospital death, D2B, cardiogenic shock and 30-day readmission. For direct presentations, fewer patients in the DOR group achieved D2B time <90 min compared with the BOR group (71.4% vs. 80.9%, P=0.042). This was more apparent after exclusion of non-system delay cases (DOR 81.6% vs. BOR 95.9%, P=0.006). Prevalence of both out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (9.5% vs. 1.9%, P=0.003) and acute mitral regurgitation (31.6% vs. 17.5%, P=0.006) was higher in the DOR group. Mortality was similar between groups. Multivariable regression showed that longer D2B time was an independent predictor of death (odds ratio 1.005, 95% confidence interval 1.000–1.011, P=0.029).Conclusions:The COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak response have had an adverse effect on PPCI service efficiency. The study reinforces the need to focus efforts on shortening D2B time, while maintaining infection control measures.

Since March 2012, multi-year ground-based observation of atmospheric aerosol particles has been carried out in Tsukuba, Japan to characterize the aerosol particle number concentrations (NCs), air mass origin relevance, and specifically, their cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nucleating particle (INP) characteristics. The CCN NCs at any water supersaturation (SS) exhibit strong seasonality, being higher in winter and lower in summer; this pattern is similar in the polluted urban environment in East Asia and contrary to that in the Pacific coastal region. The hygroscopicity (κ) is generally high in early autumn and low in early summer, likely due to the seasonal difference of synoptic-scale systems. In contrast, the INP NCs and ice nucleation active surface site density (ns) at defined temperature (−15 to −35°C) and SS (0%-5%) lack clear seasonal influence. The average INP NCs and ns in this study were comparable at warmer temperatures and approximately one order of magnitude lower at colder temperatures, compared with those in other urban locations under limited dust impact. Moreover, the ns values were one to four orders of magnitude lower and exhibited weaker temperature dependence than previous parameterizations on mineral dust particles.

Various carbon and boron compounds bearing a 1, 8-disubstituted anthracene skeleton were synthesized and characterized by X-ray analysis. They showed three types of structures based on the kinds of substituents. The first one is symmetrical and is a loose pentacoordinate structure, which has the sp2 carbon or boron atom and the two weak apical interactions. The next one is an unsymmetrical tetracoordinate structure, which has the sp3 central atom. The last one is symmetrical and is a tight pentacoordinate structure, which resulted from the special feature of the fluorine substituents on the boron. The existence of hypervalent interaction was proved by the Atoms In Molecules Theory, experimental electron distribution analysis and a comparison among the structures of tight and loose pentacoordinate species. The synthesis and structures of hypervalent carbon compounds with a 2, 6-bis (aryloxymethyl) benzene ligand are also discussed.

In this article, we propose a method called “continuous noise masking (cNM)” that allows eliminating residual buzziness in a continuous vocoder, i.e. of which all parameters are continuous and offers a simple and flexible speech analysis and synthesis system. Traditional parametric vocoders generally show a perceptible deterioration in the quality of the synthesized speech due to different processing algorithms. Furthermore, an inaccurate noise resynthesis (e.g. in breathiness or hoarseness) is also considered to be one of the main underlying causes of performance degradation, leading to noisy transients and temporal discontinuity in the synthesized speech. To overcome these issues, a new cNM is developed based on the phase distortion deviation in order to reduce the perceptual effect of the residual noise, allowing a proper reconstruction of noise characteristics, and model better the creaky voice segments that may happen in natural speech. To this end, the cNM is designed to keep only voice components under a condition of the cNM threshold while discarding others. We evaluate the proposed approach and compare with state-of-the-art vocoders using objective and subjective listening tests. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the effect of residual noise and can reach the quality of other sophisticated approaches like STRAIGHT and log domain pulse model (PML).

Deep neural networks are highly nonlinear hierarchical systems. Statistical neurodynamics studies macroscopic behaviors of randomly connected neural networks. We consider a deep feedforward network where input signals are processed layer by layer. The manifold of input signals is embedded in a higher dimensional manifold of the next layer as a curved submanifold, provided the number of neurons is larger than that of inputs. We show geometrical features of the embedded manifold, proving that the manifold enlarges or shrinks locally isotropically so that it is always embedded conformally. We study the curvature of the embedded manifold. The scalar curvature converges to a constant or diverges to infinity slowly. The distance between two signals also changes, converging eventually to a stable fixed value, provided both the number of neurons in a layer and the number of layers tend to infinity. This causes a problem: When we consider a curve in the input space, it is mapped as a continuous curve of fractal nature, but our theory contradictorily suggests that the curve eventually converges to a discrete set of equally spaced points. In reality, the numbers of neurons and layers are finite and thus, it is expected that the finite size effect causes the discrepancies between our theory and reality. Further studies are necessary to understand their implications on information processing.

In this paper, a 32-bit RISC-V microcontroller in a 65-nm Silicon-On-Thin-BOX (SOTB) chip is presented. The system is developed based on the VexRiscv Central Processing Unit (CPU) with the Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) extensions of RV32IM. Besides the core processor, the System-on-Chip (SoC) contains 8KB of boot ROM, 64KB of on-chip memory, UART controller, SPI controller, timer, and GPIOs for LEDs and switches. The 8KB of boot ROM has 7KB of hard-code in combinational logics and 1KB of a stack in SRAM. The proposed SoC performs the Dhrystone and Coremark benchmarks with the results of 1.27 DMIPS/MHz and 2.4 Coremark/MHz, respectively. The layout occupies 1.32-mm2 of die area, which equivalents to 349,061 of NAND2 gate-counts. The 65-nm SOTB process is chosen not only because of its low-power feature but also because of the back-gate biasing technique that allows us to control the microcontroller to favor the low-power or the high-performance operations. The measurement results show that the highest operating frequency of 156-MHz is achieved at 1.2-V supply voltage (VDD) with +1.6-V back-gate bias voltage (VBB). The best power density of 33.4-µW/MHz is reached at 0.5-V VDD with +0.8-V VBB. The least current leakage of 3-nA is retrieved at 0.5-V VDD with -2.0-V VBB.

Background:SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with myocardial injury, but there is a paucity of experimental platforms for the condition.Methods and Results:Human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) infected by SARS-CoV-2 for 3 days ceased beating and exhibited cytopathogenic changes with reduced viability. Active viral replication was evidenced by an increase in supernatant SARS-CoV-2 and the presence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocaspid protein within hiPSC-CMs. Expressions of BNP, CXCL1, CXCL2, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α were upregulated, while ACE2 was downregulated.Conclusions:Our hiPSC-CM-based in-vitro SARS-CoV-2 myocarditis model recapitulated the cytopathogenic effects and cytokine/chemokine response. It could be exploited as a drug screening platform.

Optics-based surveys for large unicellular zooplankton were carried out in five different oceanic areas. New identification criteria, in which “radiolarian-like plankton” are categorized into nine different groups, are proposed for future optics-based surveys. The autonomous visual plankton recorder (A-VPR) captured 65 images of radiolarians (three orders: Acantharia, Spumellaria and Collodaria) and 117 phaeodarians (four taxa: Aulacanthidae, Phaeosphaerida, Tuscaroridae and Coelodendridae). Colonies were observed for one radiolarian order (Collodaria) and three phaeodarian taxa (Phaeosphaerida, Tuscaroridae and Coelodendridae). The rest of the radiolarian orders (Taxopodia and Nassellaria) and the other phaeodarian taxa were not detected because of their small cell size (< ca. 400 µm).

Increasing oxidative stress seems to be the result of an imbalance between free radical production and antioxidant defenses. During the course of aging, oxidative stress causes tissue/cellular damage, which is implicated in numerous age-related diseases. Carnosinase (CN or CNDP) is dipeptidase, which is associated with carnosine and/or glutathione (GSH) metabolism, those are the most abundant naturally occurring endogenous dipeptide and tripeptides with antioxidant and free radical scavenger properties. In the present study, we generated Drosophila cndp (dcndp) mutant flies using the CRISPR/Cas9 system to study the roles of dcndp in vivo. We demonstrate that dcndp mutant flies exhibit shorter lifespan and increased sensitivity to paraquat or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) induced oxidative stress. These results suggest that dcndp maintains homeostatic conditions, protecting cells and tissues against the harmful effects of oxidative stress in the course of aging.

Objective: Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) including intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a serious complication after carotid artery stenting (CAS). Therefore, neurointerventionalists in Japan commonly stratify the risk for CHS preprocedurally in CAS candidates using various imaging tests that are available, and sometimes performed preventive methods against CHS, such as staged angioplasty (SAP), undersized-balloon angioplasty followed by delayed CAS. In the current study, we used a nationwide questionnaire survey to clarify the current status of the periprocedural management against CHS and the 30-day outcomes of patients with a high risk of CHS after undergoing CAS or endovascular carotid revascularization procedures, such as SAP or stand-alone angioplasty. This study specifically analyzed the data for the periprocedural management against CHS.Materials and Methods: Between June and August 2014, questionnaires were emailed to all of the neurointerventional specialists certified by the Japanese Society for Neuroendovascular Therapy (JSNET). If two or more specialist physicians belonged to an institute, a representative physician of the institute answered the questionnaire. This study focused on 14 items of the questionnaire that were directed at examining the preprocedural imaging tests done to evaluate the risk of CHS, the periprocedural management strategies used to prevent CHS, and the postprocedural imaging tests to detect hyperperfusion phenomenon, among others.Results: Replies were obtained from 154 institutes which represented 336 JSNET-certified neurointerventional specialists. Preprocedural imaging tests done to evaluate the risk of CHS were performed in 144 institutes (93.5%), with single-photon emission CT (SPECT) the most used modality in 88.2% of the institutes. Acetazolamide challenge was performed in 114 (89.8%) of 127 institutes that used preprocedural SPECT evaluation. Of the institutes performing preprocedural CHS-risk evaluation, general anesthesia was administered during the procedure in 44.4%, periprocedural edaravone (a free radical scavenging agent) was used in 52.1%, and periprocedural strict blood pressure control was performed in 91.7%. Postprocedural intravenous anticoagulation therapy was not used for patients with a high risk of CHS in 63.2%. Postprocedural imaging tests to detect hyperperfusion phenomenon were undertaken in 99.3% of the institutes performing preprocedural CHS-risk evaluation. The leading imaging modality, SPECT, was used in 78.3%. SAP was attempted or performed in 27.1% of the institutes.Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that Japanese practitioners attempt to prevent CHS after carotid endovascular revascularization procedures. Most Japanese neurointerventionalists preprocedurally evaluated the risk of CHS in CAS candidates primarily using SPECT with acetazolamide challenge. The penetration rate for SAP was 27.1% of the institutes.

[Purpose] This study used electromyography to measure the effective treatment duration of interferential current therapy for muscle fatigue. [Subjects and Methods] Fifteen healthy adult men volunteered to participate in the study (age: 24.2 ± 1.3 years; weight: 67.6 ± 4.92 kg; height: 176.4 ± 4.92 cm). All subjects performed 5 min of isometric back extension exercise to produce muscle fatigue, and were then treated with interferential current therapy for 15 min, with electromyography monitoring (treatment group). After sufficient rest, the exercise was repeated for 5 min and an electromyography signal was acquired for 15 min with no treatment (control group). [Results] In the treatment group, the median frequency shifted to a higher level; the root mean square decreased over time, and then maintained a minimum amplitude. However, there were few changes in the electromyography signal after exercise in the control group. [Conclusion] Electromyography signals can provide information about the effective duration for muscle fatigue treatment as well as the muscle characteristics during treatment. This study should be helpful for clinicians by demonstrating the appropriate duration of therapy for relief of muscle stiffness.

The argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) are cellular proliferation markers, crucial for predicting the clinical course and aggressiveness of tumors. The purpose of this study was to establish an easy and practical AgNOR staining method in the cytology of dogs and cats. Air-dried cytological slides were prepared from dogs (n=14) and cats (n=12). Ethanol, acetone, and formalin were tested as fixatives for AgNOR staining. Subsequently, various methods of Romanowsky-based counterstains were tested before and after AgNOR staining. Clear and strong AgNOR spots were observed with all fixatives, and post-May–Grünwald staining was the best counterstaining method. The established method showed clear AgNOR spots even in the long-term storage samples and Romanowsky-stained ones.
