This paper proposes a 2.5MHz high-frequency output inverter based on a frequency multiplying technique with a multi-core transformer using Mn-Zn ferrite materials. The upper limit of the operation frequency for these materials is lower than the output frequency of 2.5MHz. First, the operation principle of the proposed circuit is explained. Second, a difficulty of using Mn-Zn for transformers at the frequency of 2.5MHz is discussed. Third, a numerical analysis shows that the proposed circuit can output the frequency over the upper limit of the operation frequency of Mn-Zn ferrite. Finally, through continuous operation, where the proposed circuit outputs approximately 650W, it is experimentally confirmed that Mn-Zn ferrite can be used without large iron loss at the output frequency of 2.5MHz. Thus, the proposed circuit can overcome the difficulty of using Mn-Zn for transformers at the frequency of 2.5MHz.

The fishes from the Early Cretaceous (early Barremian) locality of Las Hoyas, in the Spanish province of Cuenca, are reviewed from a palaeoecological point of view. Las Hoyas was a permanent lake surrounded by actively interacting wetlands, with dry and humid cycles; no marine influence has been detected. A good number of the most generalized fishes from the lake, as well as small piscivore forms, would probably get into the wetlands in different extents throughout time, according to the availability of additional ecological space and food sources. Other fish taxa, such as the pycnodonts and the largest piscivores, must have had more physically restrained niches, probably somehow related with the humidity cycles in the palaeoenvironment. Juvenile fishes are largely represented in this locality, including events of mass mortality. The adults show a very interesting phenomenon of size reduction, probably related with environmental stress.The ecomorphologic overview of the fishes from the permanent waters of the Las Hoyas lake confirms that they must have occupied different niches, which, according to the lacustrine ecological spaces, can be grouped into:1) nekton related with the pleuston/plankton, such as the plankter Pleuropholis (Pholidophoriformes) or the surface insect-larvae eater Gordichthys (Chanidae), plus juvenile stages of many taxa, and possibly some other primitive teleosts that were plankton filters;2) nekton in strict sense, including the piscivore Caturus, Amiopsis, and Vidalamia (Amiidae); the water-bug eater Notagogus (Macrosemiidae); the shrimp-eater Lepidotes (Semionotidae), and ram feeder Rubiesichthys (Chanidae), plus a large amount of primitive teleosts, which constituted the major component of the Las Hoyas fish biomass;3) nekton related with the benthos, such as the predatory coelacanth cf. Holophagus and the pycnodonts Stenamara and Turbomesodon, adapted to a durophagous diet.A hypothesis of sexual dimorphism for the chanid teleost Rubiesichthys gregalis is proposed. Both morphotypes are discriminated by their relative body height only, and do not differ in any other morphometric, meristic, or anatomic character. They both occur in the same levels of the same localities, in about a 50-50% ratio for adult individuals, and there is no difference between the morphotypes and specimens from both known populations, El Montsec and Las Hoyas. Consequently, the two morphotypes of Rubiesichthys are interpreted as sexual dimorphs of a single species, R. gregalis. According to the variation found in Recent fishes, the higher-bodied morphotype is proposed to be the female dimorph, and the lower-bodied morphotype, the male dimorph. Differentiation of sexual dimorphs begins at about 20 mm; all specimens below that length show slender bodies only, and are considered juvenile.

Most organisms have multiple α- and β-tubulin isotypes that likely contribute to the diversity of microtubule (MT) functions. To understand the functional differences of tubulin isotypes in Caenorhabditis elegans, which has nine α-tubulin isotypes and six β-tubulin isotypes, we systematically constructed null mutants and GFP-fusion strains for all tubulin isotypes with the CRISPR/Cas9 system and analyzed their expression patterns and levels in adult hermaphrodites. Four isotypes—α-tubulins TBA-1 and TBA-2 and β-tubulins TBB-1 and TBB-2—were expressed in virtually all tissues, with a distinct tissue-specific spectrum. Other isotypes were expressed in specific tissues or cell types at significantly lower levels than the broadly expressed isotypes. Four isotypes (TBA-5, TBA-6, TBA-9, and TBB-4) were expressed in different subsets of ciliated sensory neurons, and TBB-4 was inefficiently incorporated into mitotic spindle MTs. Taken together, we propose that MTs in C. elegans are mainly composed of four broadly expressed tubulin isotypes and that incorporation of a small amount of tissue-specific isotypes may contribute to tissue-specific MT properties. These newly constructed strains will be useful for further elucidating the distinct roles of tubulin isotypes.Key words: tubulin isotypes, microtubules, C. elegans

本研究は朝の連続テレビ小説(朝ドラ)の女性表象及びその社会的意義を検証したものである。研究範囲となる50年間を5つの時期に分け、テクスト分析を主な研究方法とし、作品の特徴・傾向を分析した結果は以下となる。朝ドラは最初から女の一代記ではなかったこと、全盛期の朝ドラは戦時のジェンダー的構造を、映像を通し、視聴者に再体験させる役割があることと、女性の自立、家庭と仕事の両立が可能な条件は「女性職」、明治大正昭和というテーマに限られていることが指摘できる。本研究は「女性のジャンル」の下位概念から、メディアでの女性文化に関する分析を試みた。

CD20 and CD3 are considered reliable markers for B and T cells, respectively. This study aimed to develop a rapid multiple immunofluorescence (RMIF) method for the detection of CD20 and CD3 on a single cytology slide. Air-dried smears were prepared using samples collected from dogs (n=26) and cats (n=6). Immunosignal detection using the newly developed method required 60 min. Clear immunosignals for CD20 and CD3 were detected in 24 of 26 samples in dogs and in all 6 cats. As the RMIF (CD20/CD3) method can detect markers of both B and T cells simultaneously on a single cytology smear, it would be an efficient tool for the immunophenotyping of canine and feline lymphoma samples.

The purpose of this study is to examine the physiological effects of Shinrin-yoku (taking in the atmosphere of the forest). The subjects were 12 male students (22.8±1.4 yr). On the first day of the experiments, one group of 6 subjects was sent to a forest area, and the other group of 6 subjects was sent to a city area. On the second day, each group was sent to the opposite area for a cross check. In the forenoon, the subjects were asked to walk around their given area for 20 minutes. In the afternoon, they were asked to sit on chairs and watch the landscapes of their given area for 20 minutes. Cerebral activity in the prefrontal area and salivary cortisol were measured as physiological indices in the morning at the place of accommodation, before and after walking in the forest or city areas during the forenoon, and before and after watching the landscapes in the afternoon in the forest and city areas, and in the evening at the place of accommodation. The results indicated that cerebral activity in the prefrontal area of the forest area group was significantly lower than that of the group in the city area after walking; the concentration of salivary cortisol in the forest area group was significantly lower than that of the group in the city area before and after watching each landscape. The results of the physiological measurements show that Shinrin-yoku can effectively relax both people's body and spirit.

The taste-modifying protein miraculin (MIR) has received increasing interest as a new low-calorie sweetener. In our previous study using the tomato variety ‘Micro-Tom,’ it was shown that in transgenic tomatoes in which MIR was expressed by using the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter (p35S) and a heat shock protein terminator (tHSP) cassette (p35S-MIR-tHSP), higher levels of miraculin accumulated than when MIR was driven by the nopaline synthase terminator (tNOS) cassette (p35S-MIR-tNOS). ‘Micro-Tom’ is a dwarf tomato used for research and shows a low yield. To achieve high productivity of MIR, it is essential to improve the MIR accumulation potential by using high-yielding cultivars. In this study, we evaluate whether the high MIR accumulation trait mediated by the tHSP appears even when fruit size increases. A line in which the p35S-MIR-tHSP cassette was introduced into a high-yielding variety was bred by backcrossing. The line homozygous for MIR showed higher accumulation of MIR than the heterozygous line. Despite large differences in fruit size, the MIR level in the backcross line was similar to that in the p35S-MIR-tHSP line (background ‘Micro-Tom’). It was approximately 3.1 times and 4.0 times higher than those in miracle fruits and the p35S-MIR-tNOS tomato line 5B (‘Moneymaker’ background, which exhibits the highest miraculin productivity achieved thus far), respectively. These results demonstrate that the high MIR accumulation trait mediated by the tHSP appears even when fruit size is increased.

This study investigates the synoptic scale flows associated with extreme rainfall systems over the Asian-Australian monsoon region (90-160°E and 12°S-27°N). Based on statistics of the 17-year Precipitation Radar observations from Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission, a total of 916 extreme systems with both the horizontal size and maximum rainfall intensity exceeding the 99.9th percentiles of the tropical rainfall systems are identified over this region. The synoptic wind pattern and rainfall distribution surrounding each system are classified into four major types: Vortex, Coastal, Coastal with Vortex, and None of above, with each accounting for 44 %, 29 %, 7 %, and 20 %, respectively. The vortex type occurs mainly over the off-equatorial areas in boreal summer. The coast-related types show significant seasonal variations in their occurrence, with high frequency in the Bay of Bengal in boreal summer and on the west side of Borneo and Sumatra in boreal winter. The None-of-the-above type occurs mostly over the open ocean, and in boreal winter these events are mainly associated with the cold surge events. The environment analysis shows that coast-related extremes in the warm season are found within the areas where high total water vapor and low-level vertical wind shear occur frequently. Despite the different synoptic environments, these extremes show a similar internal structure, with broad stratiform and wide convective core rain. Furthermore, the maximum rain rate locates mostly over convective area, near convective-stratiform boundary in the system. Our results highlight the critical role of the strength and direction of synoptic flows in the generation of extreme rainfall systems near coastal areas. With the enhancement of the low-level vertical wind shear and moisture by the synoptic flow, the coastal convection triggered diurnally has a higher chance to organize into mesoscale convective systems and hence a higher probability to produce extreme rainfall.

Background: We sought to investigate the optimal values of BMI for the lowest risk of all-cause death and whether the optimal BMI differs according to smoking status in large-scale pooled analysis of 13 Japanese cohorts.Methods: Data from 179,987 participants of 13 well-qualified cohort studies conducted throughout Japan were used for our analysis. A cohort-stratified Cox proportional hazard model was used. P values for interactions were calculated based on the cross product of BMI and age, sex, or smoking status.Results: In the entire study population, all-cause mortality risk was lowest when the BMI was 22.0–24.9 kg/m2. This was also the case for selected healthy participants (never smoked, baseline total cholesterol level ≥4.1 mmol/L; the first 5 years of follow-up data were excluded). No effect modification of age, sex, or smoking status was observed. Regardless of their BMI, never smokers always had a lower all-cause mortality risk than did current smokers even with an ideal BMI in terms of mortality risk.Conclusion: A BMI of 22–24.9 kg/m2 correlated with the lowest risk of mortality, regardless of whether all participants or selected healthy participants were analyzed. The fact that smoking was more strongly associated with mortality than obesity emphasizes the urgency for effective anti-smoking programs.

In order to determine whether Agent Orange exposure was associated with increased frequency of medical problems, we conducted a cross-sectional epidemiologic study of Korean veterans during 1995-1996. 1, 224 Vietnam and 154 non-Vietnam veterans were included in the study. Exposure to Agent Orange was assessed by structured in-depth interview on the participants' history of service in Vietnam. Health outcomes were assessed by a standardized comprehensive clinical investigation by a group of clinical specialists. The differences in the prevalence of various medical diagnoses were assessed by Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel chi-square tests comparing the exposure levels of Vietnam veterans, adjusting for age. Multiple logistic regression was performed to estimate the effect of “service in Vietnam” adjusting for age, smoking, alcohol, body mass index, education, and marital status. Vietnam veterans had an increased frequency of eczema (odds ratio [OR]=6.54), radiculopathy (OR=3.98), diabetes (OR=2.69), peripheral neuropathy (OR=2.39), and hypertension (OR=2.29), compared to non-Vietnam veterans, adjusting for potential confounders. In addition, higher levels of exposure among Vietnam veterans were associated with increased frequency of ischemic heart disease (p<0.01), valvular heart disease (p<0.01), and retinopathy (p<0.01). We conclude that exposure to Agent Orange is associated with various health impacts in Korean Vietnam veterans.

Background:We investigated the current medical and social conditions and outcomes of heart failure (HF) patients in Hiroshima Prefecture, a local district in Japan.Methods and Results:From March 2017 to February 2018 we enrolled all adult patients with hospitalized HF in 8 regional core hospitals that provided an interprofessional team approach for HF patients. We collected patients’ clinical characteristics and information regarding living circumstances, cognitive function, quality of life, and interprofessional team approach. For patients discharged home, we followed up the primary endpoint (all-cause death and all-cause unscheduled readmission), conditions of outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, and home nursing-care services over a 1-year period after discharge. Of the registered patients (n=1,218), 39.2% were super-elderly (≥85 years old); more than half of these patients had preserved ejection fraction (≥50%). In the follow-up cohort (n=632), 140 patients (22.2%) were readmitted with HF exacerbation as the primary endpoint, and almost half (n=295, 46.7%) experienced any primary endpoint. The multivariate analysis adjusted for medical and social factors showed that completion of outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (5-month program) remained a strong negative predictor of the primary endpoint (hazard ratio: 0.15; 95% confidence interval: 0.05–0.48; P=0.0013).Conclusions:Our cohort study highlighted the super-aging of current HF patients in Japan. Cardiac rehabilitation through continuous team approach appears to be associated with favorable overall outcomes in this population.

オーストラリア産多毛類と日本産多毛類を中心とする底生生物の生物相を比較しながら、外来種の調査を行った。オーストラリア沿岸の付着生物(カキやイガイなど)の隙間に棲む多くの種類が外来種の可能性があることが確認できた。また、オーストラリア産、日本産、米国西海岸産の数種の比較で、外来種ではなく、それぞれ別個の種である可能性があることがわかった。今後、これらの外来種なのか別個の種なのか判明していない種の起源や移入・伝播経路等をDNA解析により明らかにしていく予定である。また、海洋研究開発機構との共同研究により、深海産の多毛類について新記録種が見つかった。この種はDNA解析により既知種との類縁性が考えられるものの、剛毛などの外部形態に差異があることから新種(未記載種)の可能性がある。今回は採集された個体数が少なく、外部形態の差異が変異なのか固定形質なのか判別できないため、新種または既知種との判断は行っていない。今後の調査により同種が採集された場合には種の位置付けが確定されると思われる。横浜港など東京湾内や相模湾内の底生生物調査とともに、淡水産生物の調査も行った。淡水には特異な進化を遂げた種が分布し、その分布域に外来種が入り込むことで、多くの淡水産種が分布を狭めたり、絶命に瀕する例が知られている。そのため、淡水産の種とそれに影響を及ぼす可能性がある種を調査・研究することを目的とした。欧州の洞窟に棲む種やタイの淡水・汽水に棲むカンザシゴカイ科、日本の洞窟内淡水に生息するホラアナゴカイ科などを調べた。それぞれ現在も良好な分布が確認されたが、今後もモニタリングすることにより、その分布域の減少に注視する必要があると思われる。

人間の知的創造物であるコンテンツを,記録し配信するメディアの手段として,今日,IT技術,とりわけインターネットの果たす役割は大きい.その中で,LODが今後メディア業界で担っていくであろう役割を考える.具体的事例として,BBCとThe New York Times が取り組んでいる施策を紹介し,考察する.また,広くメディアの歴史を概観する中で,LODの立ち位置を考える.その過程では,データとしてのコンテンツよりも,それらを「つなぐ」ことに価値があるという世界が明らかになるだろう.筆者らは,データのみならず,アプリケーション,さらに,サービスを「つなぐ」,LOAおよびLOSを提唱したい.
