This research explored whether self-compassion buffers people against perceived threat in the face of job rejection and enables them to invest their internal resources in job hunting again. It also examined whether intrinsic-improvement orientation toward job hunting moderates the relation of self-compassion to the reinvestment of resources. In Study 1, a total of 153 Japanese undergraduates responded to a hypothetical scene about being rejected at a job interview for a sought-after company. Results indicated that self-compassion was negatively related to perceived threat and that the positive relation of self-compassion to resource reinvestment in job hunting was significant only among those high in intrinsic-improvement orientation toward job hunting. In Study 2, a total of 50 job-hunting students recalled their own job rejections and reported on how they had coped with them. Results replicated the main findings of Study 1, indicating that self-compassionate people are less likely to overestimate threat from their rejection and that they are more likely to reinvest their internal resources in job hunting when they are high in intrinsic-improvement orientation toward it.

本研究では,大学新入生の友人に対する自己高揚的自己呈示が,その後の友人からの評価,関係満足感,及び自尊心に与える影響を検討した。調査参加者は4度の縦断的調査(4月,5月,6月,7月)に同性の友人とペアとなり,質問紙への回答を行った。232名(116組,男性134名,女性98名)を分析対象者とした。Actor-Partner Interdependence Model(APIM)を用いて,5月に友人に対して自己高揚的自己呈示を行うことが,6月の相手からの実際の評価やその評価の推測を介して,7月の関係満足感や自尊心に与える影響を検討した。分析の結果,友人に対して有能さと親しみやすさの自己呈示を行っているほど,友人からポジティブな評価を得ていると認知し,関係満足感および自尊心が高いというActor効果がみられた。また,親しみやすさの自己呈示を行っているほど,実際に友人からポジティブな評価を得ており,その後の友人の関係満足感も高いというPartner効果もみられた。つまり,親しみやすさの自己呈示は,自己呈示を行った本人と友人の双方の関係満足感の高さに影響していた。大学新入生が友人に対して自己高揚的自己呈示を行うことの有益さについて議論を行った。

The present study tried to reveal whether self-presentations in dating relationships are self-verifying or self-enhancing, by examining the relationships among (1) self-view, (2) the desired evaluation and (3) the assumed evaluation from the dating partner. Participants were 156 undergraduates (60 males, 96 females) in dating relationships. The main findings were as follows: 1) Participants expected evaluations from their partners that are more positive than their own. 2) Participants assumed they would be given such evaluations from their partners and perceived the evaluations to be accurate. 3) As their "passion" for the partner became stronger, participants expected evaluations from their partners to be more self-enhancing on a dimension that was important to their relationship. 4) As their "intimacy" deepened, participants expected evaluations from their partners in a self-enhancing way. In addition, participants perceived their partners' evaluations to be highly accurate on a dimension that was important to their relationship. The result of this study supported the strategic self-verification model (Bosson & Swann, 2001) and suggested that both motivations of self-enhancement and self-verification work in dating relationships.

Shafir (1993) found that people select an alternative which is positive on some dimensions and negative on others more often than one with average dimensions. We applied his methodology to the choice of a person. It is argued that Japanese people prefer a person with an average disposition. But is it that they really prefer this or that they believe that others do? We presented a scenario where two persons wanted to join a party with your group. One was positive on some dimensions and negative on others, whereas the other had an average disposition. One hundred and seven female students were asked to choose one of the two persons, and 113 female students were asked to reject one of the two. They were also asked to infer which person the other members of their group would choose or reject. The results were that our participants chose and rejected the person with positive and negative dimensions in the self-decision condition, whereas they inferred that other members would choose the average person. These imply that self-critical bias may reflect an adaptive strategy as to the selection of persons.

本研究では異性との親密な関係における自己呈示を取り上げ,異性との関係の親密さが,その異性に対する自己呈示動機に与える影響について検討した。調査対象者は758名(男性328名,女性428名,不明2名)の大学生であり,最も親しい異性を一人思い浮かべて質問紙に回答した。主な結果は次のとおりである。(1)関係を重要視しているほど,異性に対して恋愛感情を感じるほど自己呈示動機は高くなっていた。(2)関係が継続しているほど,異性友人関係では自己呈示動機が低くなっていたが,恋人関係では高くなっていた。(3)恋人関係であることの排他性は自己呈示動機を抑制していた。これらの結果より,長期的関係において短期的関係に比べて自己呈示動機が一概に低くなるわけではなく,長期的関係における自己呈示に関する研究を扱う必要性が示された。

本研究では,社会的状況が人々の状況に対する満足度の規定因に及ぼす影響を検討した。模擬社会ゲーム(SIMSOC)を用いて,大学生を対象に実験を行った。模擬社会においては,2つの富裕地域(緑地域・黄地域)と2つの困窮した地域(青地域・赤地域)がある。参加者は,4つの地域にランダムに振り分けられた。各セッション後,参加者は地域内における決定手続きの公正さ,地域内の分配の均等さ,地域間の保有資源の均等さ,さらに状況に対する満足度についての評定を求められた。その結果,状況への満足度において時期と地域の交互作用が認められ,状況への満足度は状況要因と地域要因によって影響を受けることが明らかになった。この結果は,状況に対する満足度は状況要因と地域要因によって異なっていることを示している。

われわれは、いつも同じ自分を表出しているのではなく周囲の状況や対人関係に応じて自分を変化させ異なる自分を多面的に表出している。その背景には、自己の可変性によって適応的な関係を築きたいという動機が考えられる。本研究の目的は、相互作用の相手のパーソナリティによって、表出される自己が普段とどう異なるか、また普段の自分からの変化が大きいほど、会話満足度や親密度を高めるかを検討するものである。本研究では、実験は男女大学生、同性同士2者間で12分間の会話実験を行なった。会話は親密になるように自由な内容で行われた。本研究では、外向性に着目し対象者の外向性を高群・中群・低群に分け、ペアを組み合わせた。分析の結果、変化の程度が大きいほど、相手との親密度が高まることが明らかとなった。また会話相手の外向性や表現力、自己抑制の社会的スキルが、変化の程度に影響していた。自己変容の適応的な対人コミュニケーションにおける可能性について考察する。

Self-compassion is defined as being compassionate towards the self in times of suffering, and is composed of the following three components: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. This article reports the development of the Japanese version of the Self-Compassionate Reactions Inventory (SCRI-J). The SCRI-J measures self-compassion based on the degree to which people choose self-compassionate reactions to 8 hypothetical hardships. Study 1 (N = 179) showed that the SCRI-J had sufficient internal consistency. In terms of its validity, results showed a positive correlation between the SCRI-J and the Japanese version of the Self-Compassion Scale, supporting its concurrent validity. In addition, the SCRI-J was positively correlated with self-esteem and negatively correlated with psychological stress responses. Moreover, the association between the SCRI-J and stress responses remained significant when the effect of self-esteem was removed. In Study 2 (N = 90), the SCRI-J demonstrated high test-retest reliability over 3 weeks. Overall, the present study indicates that the SCRI-J has sufficient reliability and validity as a new scale for self-compassion.
