In this study, velocity, temperature and humidity fields in urban area were analyzed using a new three dimensional plant canopy model developed by the authors. The model for the plant canopy developed here considers the following effects : (1) drag force of the planted trees, (2) shading effects on shortwave and longwave radiations, (3) production of latent heat from the plant canopy. Three cases were carried out here in order to evaluate the relaxation effect of plants on the outdoor thermal environment. In easel, green area ratio of ground surface was assumed 10%, while the green area ratio of ground surface was changed to 100% in case2. Furthermore plant canopies were set on the ground surface of case2 in case3. By comparing the distributions of scalar wind velocity, ground surface temperature, MRT (Mean Radiant Temperature) and SET (Standard Effective Temperature) in these three cases, effects of the plant canopy were clarified.

This paper discusses about some features in the positions of stage building and cavea of twenty-three Greek and Hellenistic theaters constructed in Greece through a geometrical analysis. As a result, the following four points are drawn out; (1) the positions of stage building and cavea are related each other by a circle or a regular polygon inscribed in an another circle, (2) of the circle described above are there two patterns, one equals to a orchestra and the other corresponds to a circle of which diameter is taken between the lowest steps of cavea, (3) after an introduction of a permanent proscenium, it happened in most theaters that one side of a regular polygon coincides with a position of front of the proscenium, (4) around Athens there are a few theaters with particularities, in which a position of front of a proscenium coincides with one side of a regular polygon inscribed in a circle while keeping a circular orchestra space.

The authors thank Dr. Yuzo Shinozaki for his discussion and the answers are as follows. (1) The authors think that the investigated incident wavefield; plane SH wave propagating along the fault axis with vertical incident angle of 45° and 0°, is reasonable considering the radiation pattern of the source mechanism of the earthquake. The SH wave incident analysis in the original paper does not mean the 2-D anti-plane analysis (2) The hyperelement method is adopted to show the ground motion amplification due to the deep irregular underground structure by using possibly simple model at earlier stage investigation because of the computational efficiency in spite that the method reduces the degree of freedom of modelling of actual geologycal structure. One another reason why the authors selected the method is that the scattering wavefield can easily be decomposed from the total wavefiled. (3) The authors think that the ground motion amplification characteristics based on the discussor's model cannot be applied to a discussion of the interpetation of the heavily damaged belt zone because the model is quite different form the geological structure in Kobe City. (4) As for the indicated publications to several journals, the authors had no intention of multiple publications, but they intended to appeal the idea to many persons of various fields; not only earthquake engineers but also seismologists, and not only Japanese but also persons in the world through the journal with world wide distributions.

The main items discussed in the present paper are as follows: 1. Why did the authors assume plane SH waves as an incident wavefield though the heavily damaged belt zone is situated just above the fault sources? 2. Hyperelement method developed about 20 years ago is less applicable to vertical as well as horizontal boundary value problems of deep irregular underground structure than the conventional methods such as FEM and FDM. Why did the authors choose a hyperelement method? 3. Though there was very few earthquake acceleration records observed in the heavily damaged belt zone, the authors concluded without any verification that simulated peak acceleration distributions coincide with roughly estimated observed distributions of structural damages. 4. The authors performed multiple publication.

In order to obtain the fundamental information for discussing residential energy saving strategies, long-term investigation of detail energy consumption and indoor climate Have been done in 2002 to 2003 for 80 dwellings, including detached houses and apartments, in six districts of Japan. The occupant's behavior and building thermal performance were also investigated. Energy consumption for each appliance was measured as much as possible. This paper reports the description of all houses measured and the end use structure of annual energy consumption. The main results are following; 1) In Hokkaido, Tohoku and Hokuriku districts, the annual energy consumption for many houses was more than 60GJ but such houses were very few in other districts. 2) The houses measured in Hokkaido and Hokuriku districts consumed almost the same amount of energy for space heating, cooling and mechanical ventilation as that for hot water supply. But in other districts, the share of energy consumption for hot water supply is the largest. 3) The annual energy consumption increased with the decrease in annual mean outdoor temperature. But the contribution rate is not large as 0.4.

This paper tries to reinterpret the text of Abbot Suger in terms of "colonne en delit" and "colonnette en delit". About "colonne en delit", Suger wrote three times, and he strictly distinguished the word "column (columna)" from "pier (fundamentum)" in his writings. About "colonnette en delit", he wrote nothing but one anecdote. In his anecdote about the tempest, Suger's words "podium" and "suffragia" have been translated as "scaffolding" and "centering" so far, but this paper reveals that the words could be undoubtedly interpreted as "colonnette en delit".

In this paper, Multi-layered Structure of facilities system and Multi-layered Facilities Location Problems that minimize the sum of travel costs are proposed. To analyze optimal location, 2 facilities complexes location problem on a segment is concerned. Optimal solution is derived analytically, and system configuration to obtain the solution on a segment and char- acteristics of optimal locations are investigated. Also, a heuristic method of solution is presented, which is applicable to location problem in N-dimensional Euclidean space. Through computational simulations, the effectiveness of presented algorithm is confirmed. Finally, various facilities complexes including obnoxious facilities locations with multi-layered structure are demonstrated, and their optimal locations are investigated.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the street network using then quantitative analysis, and this paper shows a theoretical value for the advantage of position. These values are caliculated as igenvector corresponding to the maximum igenvalue of the adjacent matrix led from the graph. This matrix's elements are usually 1 or 0, and a symmetric arrangement, but 1 considered to add weights and directions to these elements, and get three kinds of matrix and igenveclor. I examined the distribution of these values by applying this method to 15 model networks and two real street networks, and then I confirm that these values are useful as the indexes of the advantage of position.

The purpose of this study is to clarify how people identify the facades. The pattern identification method is to show the facades by drawings from skyline,which were classified into 4 types; Skyline, Element, Face construction and Box type. The two face identification method is to show the facades by drawings of facade and side elevation, and the architecture are recognized by elevation which have greater impression than the other one. The detail identification method is to clear the difference in characteristics of facades by showing the facade from detail to totality. Consequently, the facades were classified into 4 types.

The relationship between local bond splitting behavior and average ones in reinforced concrete members has not been clear, yet. As the first step to make clear this problem, local bond behavior in case of no lateral reinforcement is discussed based on the study by Tepfers. In this study, bond stress, τ_b, is provided as the function of internal crack depth, rt, and angle between the principal bond stress and the axis of the reinforcement, α. The bond splitting test is carried out using new-designed specimens. Test results show that the value of α is assumed to be 34 degrees, and r_i has a proportional relationship with slippage of reinforcement, s. Using these results, a new relationship between τ_b and s is proposed.

In this study we analized the composition of household with the elderly and its tenure of dwelling in Hokkaido based on the data from the population census and the housing survay of the elderly. The conclusions are as follows : 1) The number of household with the elderly is rapidly increasing. 2) The single elderly or elderly couple households are increasing in number more than the households of the elderly living with their children's family. 3) After their children become independent, the number of the elderly couple households increases. As they get older, the number of households of the elderly with their childlen's family increases, mostly because of the death of their spouses. 4) Most households with the elderly own their houses and many singles and couples rent houses.

A measurement setup, that is based on the structured light projection method, is developed to obtain a 3-dimensional image of the concrete crack surface. And then authors construct the 2-dimensional analytical method of shape properties from it's 3-dimensional image. Analyzing a measured crack surface by tensioning, some functions are formulated. From the analytical results, the measure sensitivity is about 0.125 millimeter/dot and the sampling interval length is about every millimeters, those were able to show the tendency of the shape properties of the concrete crack surface by tensioning.

The heating and cooling systems in the municipal apartment-houses at Sapporo, Kyoto and Naha are compared and discussed for the purpose of improving the thermal environment and enegy conservation. The results are summarized as follows: 1. In Sapporo where heating the whole house is accepted, adequate insulation and air-tightness works drastically. 2. In kyoto heating and cooling equipments are operated on occasion. Condensation is usually observed even in apartment-houses which are thermally insulated to meet with local standard. Inadequate insulation with open fire heating equipment accelerates energy consumpution and indoor air-pollution. 3. In Naha cross-ventilation in summer is effective, nevertheless, mechanical cooling practice is gaining the growing popularity to enable residents to lessen thier casual visibility through openings, thus ensuring mutual privacy. These facts show that energy conservation measures are required to adapt to the regional resident's living style as well as to the regional climate.

Room air temperature is recommended to be kept 28℃ for conservation of energy today. For human thermal comfort in room temperature of 28℃, it is likely to need personal control of the men dress lighter and, an increased air velocity. The present paper, by questionnaire survey in office at air temperature of 28℃, and experiment with subjects and thermal manikin of various clothes at chamber shows how human may feel to environment with air temperature of 28℃. Additionally, it is proposed to comfortable condition at room temperature of 28℃ in office as clothes, air flow, and radiant temperature.

This paper deals with urban dynamics of Kyoto via the example of Seiganji Temple's front in the Sengoku and Oda- Toyotomi era. There were some houses at the top of Ogawa river which flowed in front of the Temple. The Temple was destroyed on fire and rebuilt from 1467 onwards, but the houses kept on the river with no lot in 1567. It was after the fire on 1573 by Oda Nobunaga when the houses began to enclose the land behind them. The paper concludes that the each house on the river was changed into premise with houses and a lot.

Although the mud wall has been used in many buildings from old time, the material property is still unclear. The quality of "KABETSUCHI", which is the main material of the mud wall, depends on the place of production because it is nature material. The purpose of the experiment is to estimate exactly the quality about mixing, workability, shape of test piece, compactness, and strength test of the KABETSUCHI.

In 1716, Yoshimune Tokugawa, who had been the lord of Kishu-han, became Shogun, and moved to the Edo castle. More than two hundred retainers of Kishu-han also immigrated to Edo to be retainers of the Tokugawa shogunate. Yoshimune assigned residences near the Edo castle especially to retainers close to him, while retainers close to his predecessor were obliged to move to outskirts of Edo. However, as seen in the example of Hakuseki Arai, some retainers resisted to these enforced immigrations.

The damper investigated is an assemblage of a couple of units composed of two parallel steel plates and a layer of epoxy visco-elastic material (VEM) between them. When subjected to shear deformation, the VEM exhibits a hysteretic property or an energy absorbing capacity. The purpose of this paper is to present a method to construct a mechanical model to exactly simulate the dynamic behaviors of this damper, paving the way to putting it to practical use in the passive vibration-control design of buildings. A series of cyclic loading tests on the damper reveals that an equivalent stiffness and an equivalent damping coefficient, representing the hysteretic properties of the damper, are mainly dependent on the loading frequency and the current temperature. A linear three-element dashpot-spring model proposed has been confirmed capable of simulating these properties exactly .

In this paper, first, the authors summarize the walking activities of Nagoya CBD visitors, especially on their walking distances and routes, based on our survey. Next, in order to analyze such activities, we propose a framework of three different indicators on their redundancy levels : (1) the first redundancy can be interpreted as detours between facilities, (2) the second one is caused by visiting unplanned facilities, and (3) the third means the walking efficiency on their visit orders. Then, we analyze the explanation factors mainly from the aspects of visitors' attributes through some statistical tests. Last, we are to find the characteristics of their 'shop-around behaviors'.

In this study, we investigated the effect that the quality of accumulated snow on the snow's resistance to sliding. First, we observed changes in the quality of snow that had accumulated on the roof of a building. It was found that the particle size of the snow increased to approximately 2mm after one week and that the water content of the snow increased. Next, experiments were conducted to determine the effect that particle size of snow on a sloped roof has on the snow's resistance to sliding. The results showed that the resistance to sliding decreased as the particle size of snow increased (i.e., as the snow became more granular). The effect of particle size on the snow's resistance also depended on the degree of snow melting. From the facts described above, it is possible to utilize the effect of particle size on the snow's resistance for control of snow sliding on a sloped roof.
