The house, as an environment with which the elderly interact, is discusscd in this paper based an analysis of places (within the house) that the elderly prefer in their daily lives. The analysis focuses on the particular places in a room where daily activities take place and constitutes the study of a smaller scale environment than other previous studies have handled. Preferred places are categorized, by the purpose of activity at a given place, into 'JOUZA': a habitually preferred seating place where the elderly spend most of their time for multiple daily activities, 'KOZA' : a particular seating place for special activities, 'SEWAZA': a place where p]ants, fish, etc., are kept, and other places. Features of the environment that the elderly themselves construct in their housed are clarified by this analysis.

So-called extended sway-rocking model is frequently used in the design of embedded massive structures. When structures are embedded in soft surface layers, the model is apt to give larger shear force in the under-ground parts than the finite element method. In this paper, the authors have made clear through numerical survey using simplified models that this tendency can be attributed to the poor estimation of side wall impedance employed in the ordinary model. The authors have also proposed two modified models to evaluate the side wall impedance, and proved that the two models give more reasonable results than the ordinary sway-rocking model when foundations are embedded in soft surface strata.

This paper presents an easy-to-use two-dimensional calculation method for a cylindrical-shape cantilever earth retaining structure, as affected by the three external factors, they are: the lateral pressures, mean wall temperatures, and differential temperatures. In this method, the results are obtained by superposing the individual solutions due to the three external factors, as above. Correction for their mutual interaction is then introduced in terms of the subgrade reaction of soil. The authors compare behaviors of the said retaining structure calculated (a) by the two-dimensional calculation method, and (b) by the conventional three-dimensional FEM analysis. Their satisfactory agreement proves usefulness of the present two-dimensional calculation method.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the desirable planning of the mid-rise and high-rise multi-family housing with earthquake-proof, according to investigate the influences of Hanshin-Awaji Great Earthquake to the residential buildings and residents' living. In this purpose, a questionnaire were conducted to 105 members of Kinki branch of Architectural Institute of Japan and some of them were interviewed, and the following items were investigated and discussed: 1)disaster of residential buildings, 2)stoppage of electricity, gas, water supply, and elevators, 3)residents' refuge and their difficulty of living, 4) mutual support in the neighborhood, 5)change of residents' consciousness of neighborhood association.

This paper discusses a vibration control performance of damping devices installed in a building structure. The motivation of this study comes from the recognition that we often observe much smaller damping performance than is expected from the pre-analytical study in many application projects. Emphasis is placed on the stiffness increase of the structure that is equipped with those damping devices. The relationship between the damping and stiffness augmentation is analytically obtained and expressed in a closed form solution. Therefore, the performance in terms of damping factor is easily evaluated by means of real eigen-value analysis. Numerical simulation is also conducted to ascertain the validity of the proposed method for a relatively large structure under earthquake disturbances.

Recently, some seismic risk management measures are utilized reflecting the quantitative and qualitative assessment of seismic risk. These measures are categorized into risk control and risk financing ; the former is essential to mitigate seismic risk and the latter is effective to cover the unexpected loss caused by unforeseeable and complicated seismic events. In this paper, a seismic risk swap using a parametric trigger is employed as a risk financing measure. Portfolios consisting of 50 facilities in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka are employed in order to examine the feasibility of seismic risk swap assuming that the exchanged annual expected losses are identical. Through the examination, it is also proposed the procedure to determine the parameters used in parametric trigger based risk swap, from the viewpoint of reduction in probabilistic maximum loss.

The object of this study is to clarify sufferers' views on residential environment planning for disaster prevention by applying the building agreement. From the finding of the survey in the stricken areas by the Hanshin-Awaji great disaster, it was found that in building agreement areas where the damage by earthquake disaster had been big, the building agreement had been placed high evaluation on disaster planning. And, it was further clarified that the sufferers' views on building regulation for disaster prevention have been relevant to environmental conditions of the community before the earthquake disaster.

This paper analyzed the fireproof communal building after Great Kanto earthquake, taking 3 examples planned by Reconstructing Building Assistance Co., ltd. supporting for fireproof architectures in Tokyo and Yokohama. Spatial composition of these buildings showed that the procedures of cooperation were very complex because of adjustment of different rights of land (ownership, leasehold and rented house). But they were achieved without the support of the law for communal building, and clarified that the communal building had various possibilities concerning the city residence of the revival period.

Radiation patterns and fmax are evaluated using Kik-net strong motion records of the 2000 Tottori-ken Seibu earthquake and the aftershocks. In order to evaluate frequency-dependent radiation patterns, an empirical model of observed radial-to-transverse ratios (R/T) for aftershocks is constructed as a function of frequency, hypocentral distance and theoretical R/T. Fmax are estimated after removing site effects including soil nonlinearity and forward directivity effects. Based on the results that decay of spectra at frequencies higher than fmax is small and that fmax are not dependent on magnitude, it is pointed out that the effects of source-controlled fmax are small.

We defined the unit called "the Research Organization Unit" as basic unit consisting of staffs and students for research in the faculty of engineering. This study is analyses of the area of rooms, the formation of members and the evaluation of the area of the research organization units. The results are as follows; 1) 0ne third of the research organization units prossess the rooms for common use with other units. 2) The staffs of 80% research organization units are dissatisfied with the area of their rooms. 3) In case of the area per person is under 16 m^2, the rate of the research organization units whose staffs are disssatisfied with the area is over 50%. It is necessary that the area of research organization units are claimed based on a number of menbers.

We developed a relationship between calculated peak ground velocities (PGV) and damage ratios of residential houses in the Chuo-ward, Kobe, during the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nambu earthquake. Using the relationship, we evaluated the PGV distribution in the whole Hanshin area, and demonstrated that it corresponded to the PGV of observed records. The PGV was estimated to be more than 110 cm/sec in the damage belt. Finally, we discussed the records observed in an office building near the JR Kobe station and compared them with the PGV calculated from the damage ratio of houses. We concluded that the PGV of the record should be much smaller than that in the damage belt zone.

Recently, the research field of human - sound environment system tends to be diverse including community noise, neighborhood noise and the newly advocated concept of "soundscape". But the study field seem to be confusing for lack of a framework by which studies in the field could be described totally from one viewpoint. With the framework, the direction and significance of each study could become more clear. In this paper we construct a framework for description of human-sound environment system by assembling findings from cognitive psychology. As examples of application of the framework, we make descriptions on some topics of sound environment.

An ultimate objective of this study is not only to depict the reality of academic society, possibly embracing some sort of ambiguous degrade in its stable and established environment, but also to propose a certain strategy to avoid this, overcome this and build a better preferable future. First of all this study, in this report, a really challenging trial to build a human-academic society model dealing with the future prospect of its activity based on so-called Complexity Model, was done. Mathematical framework of the model was precisely described. And actual calculations of its artificial society were carried out on a particular Discrete Type Simulator. Results of simulations led to consider much interesting and marvelous facts.

In conjunction with the analysis of the distribution and characteristics of unlawful graffiti drawn in the streets of the city, this study examines the measures for preventing graffiti damages. The distribution range and presence of graffiti on building shutters were examined in the vicinities of Shibuya Station where there is the most frequent occurrence of graffiti in the Tokyo metropolitan area. As a result, there was more graffiti on busy streets, and there was a tendency for graffiti being drawn more easily on shutters of such small scale buildings as a multi-tenant building compared to such large scale buildings as a department store. Moreover, there was a tendency for unmanaged shutters of vacant shops being easily damaged by graffiti, and well looked after shutters being less easily damaged by graffiti. Furthermore, there was also a tendency for a similar type of graffiti grouping around an elaborate piece of graffiti.
