Mesoderm induction as a result of the interaction between endoderm and ectoderm is one of the most crucial events in vertebrate development. We identified activin as a strong mesoderm-inducing factor in an animal cap assay, an in vitro assay system using amphibian pluripotential cell mass. Activin induces mesodermal tisswes including most dorsal mesodermal tissue, notochord (which has important roles in neural induction, somite segmentation, and endodermal organogenesis), and its effects are concentration-dependent. Animal cap cells treated with high concentrations of activin differentiate into anterior endoderm, which can act as an organizer, or center of body patterning. We have established an in vitro induction system for 22 different organs and tissues using animal cap cells, and have isolated many organ-specific genes. With these useful methods, and analysis of newly isolated tissue- and organ-specific genes, the molecular biological “road map” for organogenesis is being established. 良好な母子関係を築くためには,妊産婦にとって満足のいく出産体験が重要である.妊産婦にとって満足のいく無痛分娩を行うには,(1)妊産婦に対する母性の醸成を図るための教育,(2)助産師やその他のスタッフに対する硬膜外麻酔などの鎮痛処置の教育,(3)妊産婦・家族に対する無痛分娩の教育,(4)設備等の安全体制の強化,(5)分娩中,分娩後の精神的なケアが必要である.

After World War I in the French Parliament, disputes took place about how to supervise the newborn civil air transportation. During the same period, members of Parliament became aware that the French aircraft industry had begun to decline, and this also brought about hot debates amongst politicians. The Government and members of Parliament implemented two policies: firstly, they strictly checked any form of monopoly or half-monopoly and secondly, they intervened positively in the aeronautical market. In this paper, I attempt, through detailed analyses of the "Official Journal", to comment on Emmanuel Chadeau's traditional interpretation of the French aircraft industrial policy of the 1920s.

This study examined the relationship between meeting the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for the Early Years and motor skills and cognitive function in preschool children. Participants were 4-year-old boys and girls in urban and rural areas (n=69). Physical activity was measured using a triaxial accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X). Screen time and sleep duration were assessed via self-report by guardians. Meeting the 24-h movement guidelines was defined as: 10 to 13 h/night and nap of sleep, ≤1 h/day of sedentary screen time, and at least 180 min/day more than 1.5 METs. Motor skills were evaluated by the Ages & Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3). Executive functions (shifting, visual-spatial working memory and inhibition) were evaluated by the Early Years Toolbox (Japanese translation). The prevalence of children meeting all three recommendations was 7.2% and 7.2% met none of the three recommendations. Children meeting physical activity recommendation had a better inhibition score compared to children meeting none of the recommendation (p=0.005). While, children not meeting the sleep recommendation had a better inhibition score compared to children meeting of the recommendation (p=0.042). In conclusion, meeting the physical activity or sleep recommendations were positively or negatively associated with the inhibition score. On the other hand, meeting none of the sedentary behaviour and the 3 recommendations was not associated with motor skills or cognitive function.

In Japan, school sports club activities and safety measures are important themes in school sports. The purpose of this study is to present as much objective data as possible regarding how athletic trainers are placed and intervene in athletic club activities in junior high and high schools in Japan and to clarify the current situation. In addition, while analyzing the problems and issues related to the interventions, we tried to identify commonalities and find solutions by assessing the current situation in the United States, where trainer intervention in schools seems to be more substantial than in Japan. The participation of athletic trainers in high school athletic club activities in Japan was about 20 to 30%, but no objective data regarding junior high school were found. Athletic trainer support for athletic club activities was also desired by instructors and is clearly needed, but more data are needed to prove its involvement. Furthermore, academic discussions are also needed. The search for athletic trainers and the achievement of their placement in high schools, which has been undertaken since the early 1990s in the United States, will be an effective landmark for achieving the beneficial involvement of athletic trainers in Japanese schools.

アフリカヨシネズミ(齧歯目,ヨシネズミ科)は二種の現生種がアフリカ・サハラ以南に生息している.先行研究では,現生のヨシネズミ属はその化石記録からアフリカの後期中新世末に出現したと考えられていた.日本-ケニア調査隊はケニア北部に分布する上部中新統ナカリ層(約10Ma)からヨシネズミ属の新種Thryonomys kamulai, sp. nov.を発見した.筆者らは頬歯化石を基に本種の記載を行い,ヨシネズミ属の中では小型で,また固有の稜縁歯(lophodonty)を有することが特徴づけられた.この発見により,ヨシネズミ属の初産出記録が後期中新世の約10Maに更新され,彼らは少なくとも10Ma以前にアフリカに生息していたことが考えられる.

Motility is a major characteristic of living things. We categorized all motilities reported so far based on the structure of the force-generating unit, and revealed that they can be classified into 18 types. Furthermore, we have proposed the origin and evolution of these 18 motilities on a phylogenetic tree constructed from new genomic information.

One of the major topics in biophysics and physicobiology is to understand and utilize biological functions using various techniques. Rhodopsin is a photoreactive membrane-embedded protein that uses a retinal pigment (vitamin-A aldehyde) as a chromophore. By taking advantages of its photoreactivity, structure-function relationship of rhodopsins has been widely investigated with a variety of methods. Of note, recent rhodopsin research provided unexpected information regarding (i) wide distribution in various organisms, (ii) rich functional diversity and (iii) great potential for optogenetics. Here we review these three topics with future directions.
