We found that the distances between isolated scatterers with similar columnar shapes could be measured by taking a single Fourier transform of their diffraction intensity. If the scatterers have different shapes, the distances between similar shapes can be selected from the distances between all the shapes. The distance from a specific scatterer can be measured with a resolution of 0.8 wavelengths and a precision of 0.01 wavelengths. This technique has the potential to be used in a novel optical memory that has a memory density as high as that of holographic memory, while can be fabricated by simple transfer molding. We used rigorous coupled-wave analysis to calculate the diffraction intensity. Some of the results were verified by nonstandard finite-difference time-domain simulations and experiments.

過去14冬季間(1989年11月~2003年5月)における気象庁の地上気象観測資料から,着氷性の雨,着氷性の霧雨,凍雨の発生に関する地域分布と,季節変化および経年変化を調べた.日本では,これらの降水種は1月から3月の時期に発生することが多く,毎年10回程度の割合で観測されている.このうち着氷性の雨の発生率は毎年数回程度で,12月~1月に発生する場合が多い.着氷性の雨と凍雨の発生率が高いのは,中部地方以北の内陸山間部と関東地方以北の太平洋側平野部である.この両地域に着目して,着氷性の雨や凍雨が発生するときの気象条件の形成過程を調べたところ,地上付近の寒気層の形成は,局地的な気象現象や地形の影響を強く受けることがわかった.内陸山間部では盆地地形による冷気湖の形成が関与しており,太平洋側平野部では内陸からの寒気流出によって地上付近の寒気層が形成される.一方,上空暖気層の形成は,総観規模の気圧配置に伴う暖気移流に起因する.

本研究では,ユーザの視聴行動をから好みを学習し,その人の好みを反映した要約映像作成手法を提案する.過去に見た映像と類似した映像の重要度は高く,早送りなどによりスキップした映像に類似した映像の重要度は低くなるように各フレームの重要度を推定し,この重要度をもとに要約映像を生成する.重要度の推定では,画像から得られる特徴量をそのまま使うのではなく,固有空間により得られる特徴ベクトルを用いることにより,様々な特徴量を効果的に扱う.更に,ユーザの嗜好を反映するために,ユーザの2種類の行動(視聴したか,早送りによりスキップしたか)から投票に基づく学習を用いたため,ユーザに意識させることなく学習が行える.本提案手法をサッカー映像に適用し,好みを反映した要約映像を生成し,本手法の有効性を確認した.

Electrospinning was carried out in an insulating liquid, Fluorinert FC-40 (Sumitomo 3M Ltd.), to judge whether "wet electrospinning" is practicable or not. Chloroform, N,N-dimethylformamide, and their mixture of 1 to 1 are used as a solvent of polystyrene. Among the three solvents of spinning solutions, only chloroform was fit for wet electrospinning in Fluorinert FC-40. Effect of polystyrene concentration was investigated using spinning solutions of chloroform solvent. Polystyrene particles and fibers were formed from the solutions of 5 to 15wt% polystyrene spinning solutions. From 20wt% solution, only fibers with many beads were formed, and from 25wt% solutions only fibers without beads were formed. The diameters of fibers formed were increasing with an increase in the concentration. The diameter was about 10um and 50um for fibers from 20wt% and 25wt% solutions, respectively. It is concluded that wet electrospinning is practicable. However, improvement of apparatus and process will be necessary to produce non-woven fabric of nanofibers.

A 77 years old woman who had a bite with eschar on her left arm, was admitted to emergency ward in our hospital, because of high fever, severe malaise, skin eruption, and consciousness disturbance beginning 5 days previously. She was diagnosed as Japanese spotted fever by seropositive of Rickettsia japonica (R. japonica) antibody, and successfully treated with fluoroquinolone, after minocycline hydrochloride had been proven ineffective. R. japonica-specific DNA was detected by PCR from the tick: Haemaphysalis hystricis larvae collected from a mountainous location in Fukuoka, Japan where the patient had been bitten.

The early diagnosis and treatment of Takayasu arteritis (TA) is crucial to prevent the devastating complications of vascular insufficiency. This report describes a patient with a persistent fever in whom carotid artery tenderness led to a diagnosis of TA. This case suggests that carotid artery tenderness is a useful physical finding that warrants 2-deoxy-2-[Fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography to confirm a diagnosis of early TA.
