Lactic acid bacteria are gut flora that play key roles in intestinal homeostasis, which may affect a variety of physiological functions. Our preliminary double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trials have suggested that intake of heat-killed Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei 327 (designated lactobacillus K-1) is effective for improving skin conditions. The aim of this study was to confirm the effect of lactobacillus K-1 intake in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study in healthy female volunteers. Sixty-four subjects were allocated to either the placebo food group (group P, n=32) or active food group (group A, n=32), in which subjects consumed lactobacillus K-1 50 mg (approximately 1 × 1011 bacteria) daily for 8 weeks. After excluding subjects who declined to participate (n=1), violated restrictions (n=4), or were judged ineligible by the principal investigators (n=1), data obtained with 58 subjects (30 in group A and 28 in group P) were analyzed for efficacy by comparing differences from pretrial levels between the two groups. When the level of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was measured at the arm, the level of TEWL at week 4 of the intake period was significantly lower in group A than group P (p=0.021), suggesting an improvement of skin barrier function. Analysis of skin condition questionnaire data revealed a significant reduction in skin flakiness on the face (week 4). No adverse events were associated with intake of the test foods. The safety of lactobacillus K-1 was also confirmed in an independent open-label trial in 11 healthy subjects who consumed excessive amounts of lactobacillus K-1 250 mg (approximately 5 × 1011 bacteria). Intake of lactobacillus K-1 may therefore be beneficial to skin condition improvement.

アジア・太平洋戦争において、天理教の信徒たちが行ったひのきしんがもつ意義を、帝国日本というより大きな文脈に位置づけなおすため、1940年代前半の代表的ひのきしん論である諸井慶徳『ひのきしん叙説』と、帝国日本による「聖戦」の教義を端的に示すと思われ、天理教のひのきしん隊も多数参加した橿原神宮神域拡張事業において語られた言説との比較を試みた。天理教信徒にとって、「聖戦」の教義はひのきしんの教義と深いところで響きあっており、前者を後者に手繰り寄せる形で総力戦の遂行を主体的に担っていったと思われる。また、「聖戦」の教義がひのきしんのような宗教思想・信仰と親縁性を有し、それへの読み替えを通じて実践されたことを明らかにし、アジア・太平洋戦争の宗教戦争としての性格を改めて見直し、その宗教性の受け皿となった宗教教団や社会集団の思想・実践との比較を行うとともに、それらとの接触の様相を分析していく必要性を提起した。これまで遂行してきた作業によって、戦後の宗教教団にとって非本来的で否定的なものとしてのみとらえられがちであったアジア・太平洋戦争期の経験を、現代の教団、またその教義や信仰のあり方を構成する重要な要素として位置づけ、負の側面へと深化していく宗教性のありようを積極的にとらえる歴史-宗教学的考察の領域を切り開くことができた。

東芝は革新的なCO2排出削減対策技術として超臨界CO2サイクル発電システムの開発に取り組んでいる。この新しいシステムは燃料を酸素燃焼し,高温高圧のCO2でタービン・発電機を駆動して発電すると同時に,CO2を分離・回収する設備を別に設置することなく高圧で回収することができる。

Background: A corkscrew collateral appearance on angiography is one of the diagnostic criteria for Buerger's disease. The purpose of the present study was to classify the angiographic findings of corkscrew collaterals and to evaluate the relationship between corkscrew collateral type and the severity of Buerger's disease. Methods and Results: Corkscrew collaterals were assessed on digital subtraction angiography in lower extremities of 28 patients with Buerger's disease (55 limbs). The corkscrew sign was classified into 4 types by size and pattern as follows: type I, artery diameter >2 mm, large helical sign; type II, diameter >1.5 mm and ≤2 mm, medium helical sign; type III, diameter ≥1 mm and ≤1.5 mm, small helical sign; and type IV, diameter <1 mm, tiny helical sign. The prevalence of ischemic ulcers was significantly higher in patients with types III and IV corkscrew collaterals than in patients with types I and II corkscrew collaterals either below or above the knee. Multiple regression analysis indicated that types III and IV below the knee are independent predictors of risk of ischemic ulcers. Conclusions: The prevalence of ischemic ulcers is significantly higher in patients who have small corkscrew patterns in distal segments of limb collaterals than in patients who have large corkscrew collaterals.  (Circ J 2010; 74: 1684 - 1688)

We previously reported that the intake of black tea promotes translocation of the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter (GLUT) 4 in skeletal muscle. In this study, we investigated whether black tea polyphenols (BTP) promote GLUT4 translocation in L6 myotubes. BTP promoted glucose uptake accompanied by GLUT4 translocation in L6 myotubes. As the molecular mechanism, BTP induced the phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1, atypical protein kinase C, Akt Thr308, Akt substrate 160, and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), but did not affect that of Akt Ser473. BTP increased glycogen accumulation through inactivation of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β). Theaflavin, one of the major components in black tea, also promoted the glucose uptake accompanied by GLUT4 translocation observed with BTP in L6 myotubes. These results indicate that BTP activates both PI3K- and AMPK-dependent pathways to promote GLUT4 translocation and glycogen accumulation in skeletal muscle cells. Moreover, theaflavin is one of the active components in BTP.
