Kisspeptin, identified as a natural ligand of GPR54 in 2001, is now considered as a master regulator of puberty and subsequent reproductive functions in mammals. Our previous studies using Kiss1 knockout (KO) rats clearly demonstrated the indispensable role of kisspeptin in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)/gonadotropin secretion. In addition, behavioral analyses of Kiss1 KO rats revealed an organizational effect of kisspeptin on neural circuits controlling sexual behaviors. Our studies using transgenic mice carrying a region-specific Kiss1 enhancer-driven reporter gene provided a clue as to the mechanism by which estrogen regulates Kiss1 expression in hypothalamic kisspeptin neurons. Analyses of Kiss1 expression and gonadotropin secretion during the pubertal transition shed light on the mechanism triggering GnRH/gonadotropin secretion at the onset of puberty in rats. Here, we summarize data obtained from the aforementioned studies and revisit the physiological roles of kisspeptin in the mechanism underlying reproductive functions in mammals.

The blackflies fauna was surveyed at 68 stream sites in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, in April-May 1983. A total of 2,794 larvae and 993 pupae belonging to 20 species were collected from 61 sites in Tochigi. The predominant species were Simulium uchidai (21% of the total), S. japonicum (21%) and Prosimulium yezoense (11%). The widely distributed species were S. japonicum (56%), S. uchidai (49%), S. subcostatum (45%) and S. suzukii (30%). Six species (S. iwatense, P. yezoense, S. japonicum, S. subcostatum, S. uchidai and P. kiotoense) were collected from the low land (lower than 500m above the sea level) to the high land (higher than 1,000m).

The main purposes of this paper are to measure the economic benefits of higher education and to clarify the scheme of differentiation in the higher educational system. In the economics of education we have used the private rate of return to measure the economic benefits which a person gets from education. But most previous research has an error in the empirical method. The error uses in not combining the private rate of return and the actual student placements in employment for each university. I try to remedy this error. Firstly I investigate differences in employment opportunity according to industry and enterprise size relating to 33 faculties of 10 universities (Table 2). Secondly I calculate the private rate of return for each of them (Table 3). Finally, I combine both results (Table 4). I think the private rate of return calculated by this method supersedes previous research. Furthermore from the standpoint of economics. I try to explain the demand trend of higher education on the basis of the research findings. As a result it is proved that the aspiration to graduate from a higher prestige university is reasonable economically.

The geology at the northern and western margin of the Shizukuishi basin is composed of upper Miocene Yamatsuda Formation, Pliocene Masuzawa Formation, Plio-Pleistocene Tamagawa Welded Tuffs and units from Takakura and Iwate volcanoes, in ascending order. The geological structure of the margin is characterized by the Nishine fault system, which displaces these formations and units. The fault system, a set of west-dipping reverse faults, forms the topographic and geologic boundary between the Ou Backbone Range and the Shizukuishi basin, and it controls the vertical position of underlying units as well as Takakura and Iwate volcanic products. The vertical displacement of the Shibutami Welded Tuff, which is included in the Tamagawa Welded Tuffs and erupted between 0.7and 1.0 Ma, decreases to the north and south from an area where the tuff has been vertically offset some 300-400 m, for an average displacement of about 0.4 mm/yr. Slip occurred on the northern part of the fault system during the Iwate-ken Nairiku-hokubu earthquake of September 3,1998. The tuff is also displaced at least 250 m along the Matsuo fault for an average displacement of about 0.25mm/yr at the north of the Nishine fault system. This reverse fault strikes nearly parallel to the Nishine fault system and can be traced for 5 km.

足関節外側靭帯損傷は足関節の外傷中最多であり、捻挫をして治療を受けないまま放置し、繰り返し再発を来たして足関節に不安定性を呈し、習慣性捻挫や変形性関節症(以下OA)を来たす事が知られている。今回、陳旧性前距腓靭帯損傷に対し、薄筋での靭帯再建術を施行し、日常生活において装具除去は術後3ヶ月、レクリエーションレベルの運動は装具装着にて2.5_から_3ヶ月、競技レベルの運動は術後半年より開始とした。膝屈伸筋トルクの健側との比較も行い術後3ヶ月の時点で膝屈曲:64.0%(60°/sec)、67.3%(180°/sec)、伸展80.3%、96.4%へと改善見られた為、ジョギング開始。3.5ヶ月よりサイドステップを開始。6ヶ月で底屈筋力5/5となり安定性も良好な為、クラブレベルのスポーツ復帰した2症例を経験したので報告する。今回の術式は強固な安定性が得られる為、膝屈曲筋力と荷重時期に重きをおいた。膝の筋トルクを比較し、スポーツ復帰の1つの指標とした。1症例については足関節安定性が得られても、遊離軟骨や、OAを伴う症例は後療法が長期化し、不安定性が長期化した場合、軟骨損傷は避けられずOAへ移行する事が予想される。

Recently, 16 cases with ejaculatory disturbance were treated medically in our department and the following results were obtained.1) COMT inhibitor, L-dopa and antiserotonergic drugs were effective for the cases whose ejaculatory disturbance was supposed to be due to dysfunction of the higher center of ejaculation.2) COMT inhibitor and antihistaminergic drugs were effective in some cases of retrograde ejacula-tion.3) COMT inhibitor and L-dopa were effective for the cases who had no orgasm during ejaculation.4) These medical treatments were effective in 11 of 16 cases treated.

Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is chiefly known to us for its worldwide literary fame, and is generally considered to be characterized by its medieval view of the western world. However, when we pay attention to theological background of the Divine Comedy, especially of its Purgatory, we can recognize that the theological thought of Dante not only represents the medieval western world view, but also holds true in the Byzantine tradition, which has been maintained in the Greek Catholic Church in the Central Europe. We can explain this mystery if we take notice of the history of two Councils: in the Second Council of Lyon (1274), the same theological issues were discussed as in the later Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-39). The issue of the "Purgatory" or the "Purifying Fire of the Purgatory" was already discussed in the Second Council of Lyon, and the delegates from the Byzantine Empire, which was ruled then by the emperor Michael Ⅷ Palaeologus (1261-82), reached an agreement on this issue. Although the agreement in the later Council of Ferrara-Florence was invalidated by the Orthodox Church soon after that Council, a minor party of the Eastern Church, chiefly found in the Central Europe (the Greek Catholic Church), was true to this agreement. So since we can find the same theological view both in Dante and in the Greek Catholic Church, we can surmise that Dante was acquainted with the issues discussed in the Second Council of Lyon. One of the chief leaders of the Greek delegates in the Council of Ferrara-Florence was (later) Cardinal Bessarion (1403-72). He donated main important manuscripts of the Greek Classics to the Library of Saint Mark in Venice, and these manuscripts have greatly benefited classical scholars. Thus, both the Greek Catholic Church and the Classical Studies have their origins from Bessarion. We can say that all of the endeavors of Bessarion for the union between the Western and the Eastern Churches were made for the purpose of revalidation of the agreement made in the Second Council of Lyon. So in these points of view, too, Dante will be counted as the "sixth" (Inf. 4,102) in the line of the divine poets starting from Homer, whose best manuscript (Venetus 454: "A" of the Iliad) is found in the Library of Saint Mark in Venice.

精子では転写が行われていないため、今まで精子を用いた大規模なcDNA配列解析はなされていない。しかし最近の報告により、精子内にもRNAが存在していることが明らかになった。よって本研究では、精子中に存在する転写産物の網羅的同定を塩基配列決定により行い、新規の機能性RNA分子を探索することを目的とした。精子は体細胞とは異なり全体的に非常に凝集したクロマチン構造をとっている。そのような状況下において存在しているRNAの生理機能を解析することにより、精子における遺伝子サイレンシングやゲノム構造の維持機構に関する理解を深められる。これらのデータは、RNAが遺伝物質として機能するという仮説の上に立った候補RNAを探索する基礎データにもなりうると考えられる。今年度の具体的な研究内容を以下に述べる。始めにマウスおよびチンパンジーから運動能力のある精子を採取して全RNAを精製した。今回の解析では、小分子RNAを含むできるだけ多くの転写産物の同定を行えるようにするため、RNAの長さおよび末端の形状に依存しない両末端タグ法を用いてcDNAを調整した。454シークエンサーを用いてcDNAの塩基配列決定を行い、マウスは約45万、チンパンジーは約5万のcDNAタグを得た。生物情報学的解析により、cDNAのゲノムへのマッピングを行いRNAの分類をした。その結果、マウスおよびチンパンジーの精子中にはrRNA、tRNA、mRNAの断片やmiRNA、piRNA、snoRNAなどの機能性RNAが存在することを明らかにすることができた。mRNAとmiRNAの幾つかのものについては、実際に精子中にRNAが存在することをTaqMan qRT-PCR法を用いて確認した。さらに、マウスの精子から新規miRNAの候補を複数同定した。今後は、マウスとチンパンジーの精子RNAプロファイルを比較解析する。
