Situations in which adolescents were anxious in initiating, maintaining, and terminating romantic relationships were termed "problematic situations in romantic relationships," and characteristics of such situations were identified in Japanese adolescents. Undergraduates (n=288) responded to a questionnaire on problematic situations in romantic relationships, hetero-social anxiety, competence in romantic love, and romantic experiences. The structure of problematic situations and gender differences in anxiety were investigated on the basis of the degree of anxiety experienced in such situations. Results indicated the following. (1) Many adolescents experienced anxieties about maintaining and terminating relationships. (2) Females and adolescents with no experience of romantic experiences were more anxious about maintaining romantic relationships. (3) In males, romantic experiences influenced most problematic situations through hetero-social anxiety. (4) Males with no romantic experiences were more anxious in situations that needed an active approach.

The current standard diagnostic approach for progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is to perform a DNA test to identify the presence of the JC virus in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A 32-year-old woman with a 5-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus developed right hemiplegia and motor aphasia. MRI revealed a large white matter lesion in the left frontal lobe. JC virus DNA was undetectable in the CSF, but a brain biopsy showed typical histopathology and a high DNA load of the JC virus. The patient was treated with mefloquine and mirtazapine, and is currently alive at 24 months after onset. An early brain biopsy may therefore be important for making a timely diagnosis of PML.

For field-identification of taeniid cestodes in canine animals in Tibetan area, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays for Echinococcus multilocularis, E. shiquicus, Taenia hydatigena, T. multiceps, T. pisiformis and T. crassiceps were developed and evaluated along with the reported assay for E. granulosus. The LAMP assays showed specific reaction with their corresponding target species DNA with the detection limit of 1 to 10 pg. Moreover, the assays for E. granulosus, E. multilocularis, T. hydatigena and T. multiceps could detect DNA extracted from 3 or more eggs of their corresponding target species. Then, the LAMP assays were applied on samples containing 3 to 35 taeniid eggs obtained from 61 field-collected canine feces in Qinghai, and the result was compared with a reported multiplex PCR and sequence analysis. The LAMP assays and the PCR detected single species DNA of E. granulosus, E. shiquicus, T. hydatigena and T. multiceps in 5, 2, 44 and 2 samples, respectively. In the rest 8 samples, DNA of both E. granulosus and T. hydatigena were detected by the PCR but the LAMP assays detected those DNAs in 2 samples and only T. hydatigena DNA in 6 samples. It was assumed that less than 3 E. granulosus eggs were mixed in the samples although the samples contained 21 to 27 eggs in total. In conclusion, the LAMP assays were less sensitive than the multiplex PCR, but would have adequate sensitivity for field use in Tibetan area.

With recent globalization in industries, the number of failures and troubles of products caused by using them in unexpected ways has increased. In order to avoid such troubles, it is necessary not only to assume various ways of use thoroughly, but also to verify whether the design plan can fulfill required functions when the product is utilized in those ways. From this point of view, the authors proposed a functional verification method considering ways of use based on qualitative modeling of behavior of entities and cause-and-effect relationships among physical phenomena using Petri nets. It is, however, impossible to detect failures concerning to specification which requires dealing with quantitative information. This paper provides a method for quantitative modeling of behavior of entities and cause-and-effect relationships among physical phenomena. Two types of tokens were defined for dealing with positive and negative values and four types of arcs were for controlling changes of those values. These new elements of Petri net made it possible to represent behavior of entities and cause-and-effect relationships quantitatively. Application of this new modeling method to the functional detection method enables automatic detection of failures concerning to both functions and specification. The detection method using this modeling method was applied to an example, and its effectiveness was proven.

1. センニンソウの栄養生長は自然日長下では昼/夜温24。/19°C, ないし30°/25°Cで良好であり, 17°/12°Cではほう芽•伸長が著しく遅れ, 発らい•開花しなかった.<BR>2. 適温下で生育させた場合, 5,6月の間の約1か月間を8時間日長に保つことによって新梢先端が褐変•枯死した. 花芽分化 (とそれに続く発らい•開花) は自然日長 (終始14時間以上で推移) および16時間日長によって誘起されたが, 8時間および12時間の日長では誘起されなかった. このような長日による花芽分化の誘起には, ほう芽後約1か月を経た6月以降, 約1か月間の処理が必要と認められた.<BR>3. 16時間日長を6月末で打ち切って8時間日長に戻した区は, 7月末に戻した区に比べて発らい•開花が明らかに遅れた. したがって, 分化後の花芽•花房の発達は16時間日長によって抑制されるものと考えられた.<BR>4. 自然日長下, GA<SUB>3</SUB>100および1,000ppm処理は,無処理に比べて, 概して栄養生長と発らい•開花を早めたが, 特に8回散布区で花数を著しく減少させた.8回散布区では雄しべが退化し, 雌ずいを欠いた不完全花が多数見られた. また, 正常花, 不完全花を問わず,雄しべの弁化に伴う多がく片花がみられた.

2004年7月に自動体外式除細動器(AED)が一般に解禁されると,全国津々浦々にAEDの設置が拡がり,AEDによる救命例も続出している.AEDの設置場所として人の密集する所は特に効果的で,空港,駅,イベント会場,ホテル,ショッピングセンターなどへの配備が進み,救命例も報告されている.運動に伴う心室細動の出現も想定内のことであり,AEDが準備されたマラソン大会やフィットネスジム,プール,運動場,学校などで救命に成功している.その一方でAEDが未配備の新幹線内での心停止や,配備されていたのに使用されなかった学校の事例なども報告されており,いまだ啓蒙が十分とはいえない.またAEDによる頻拍診断が不適正な事例も報告され,そのアルゴリズムに限界のあることもわかってきた.AED後に心肺蘇生術を必要とする例も少なくなく,電気ショック後の自動診断に時間をとられる前に蘇生術を再開することが新しいガイドラインで勧められている.

我々は普段日本国内において多くの英語表記を目にしている。しかしながら, その中のどれ程を認識しているのかは不明である。本稿では日本国内で使用されている英語表記を, 日本人がどれだけ認識しているかを調査した。英語は, JR電車内, JR大阪とその周辺の駅, JR東京駅構内, 東京地下鉄電車内, 東京地下鉄駅構内, 神戸空港, 関西空港, 羽田空港, モノレール, 新幹線内の各場所で収集した。一般的に日本人は, どの英語標識表記を認識し, どれを認識していないのであろうか。
