Niruya or Niraikanai, a paradise on the sea important in the beliefs of the Okinawans as well as for the islanders south to the Takara strait, has detailed resemblanses to the Japanese tradition of Ryugu (Dragon Palace), called in old days Tokoyo no Kuni or Watatsumi no Kami no Miya (Palace of the Sea-god). The first syllable ni of Niruya means "a root", such as we find in Okinawan words as nidukuru which means the stock family of a village. The Ne no Kuni (Country of the Root) must have been the Japanese name for Niruya, but it has no more the meaning of a sea paradise. According to Ryukyuan traditions, there is an eternal fire beyond the eastern horizon on the sea where the sun is born, and fire, rice-seeds and rats were brought from Niruya. Life itself seems to have been believed to be a gift therefrom. The author is inclined to see in these folk beliefs of such "sea-peoples", a tendendy for the the Ryukyuans and the ancient Japanese to put their paradise not in the west, but in the east and beyond the sea. The author describes such Ryukyuan folk-tales as "Monkey's Liver", "Visit to the Palace of the Sea", "A Flower-vender and the Dragon-god", "God of the Drift-wood", and the August Dance on Okinawa and Amami-Oshima. All of these have some connection with Niruya, comparing them with Japanese data, the author refers to the possibility of solving certain problems of the origin and ancient relatives of the Japanese. He urges upon ethnologists the necessity to continue comparative studies along this line, in order to acquire new materials concerning the migrations of our ancestors.

A novel quartz oscillator that has a temperature-stable output was investigated for outdoor hydrogen sensing. The output from the quartz oscillator remained almost constant for temperatures in the range of 15 to 50℃. Fluctuations of the output of the quartz oscillator in this temperature range were 0.3% at constant relative humidity of 0%RH, which corresponds to the change in the output when 0.3 vol% of hydrogen leaked in air. This change is thus sufficiently lower than the necessary minimum detection level of 1 vol% hydrogen concentration using the novel quartz oscillator's output during outdoor hydrogen sensing.<br>

ROS has been becoming popular as a distributed platform for robot applications. We present how we developed a tidying-up demonstration task including recognition of objects, grasping, handling of a tray and navigation in two-weeks stay at Willow Garage Inc. This paper focuses on the development using ROS framework, tools and packages.

研究ノート(Research Note)This paper discusses the merits of using Google Docs as a viable teaching aid in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. A small-scale study was undertaken on a UK university pre-sessional course to provide insight into the merits and challenges of its use, both from the student as well as the teacher perspectives. The students were intending to go on to study Master degrees at Business school and were enrolled on a six week course to improve their academic English skills. This paper highlights that Google Docs could be easily adopted with limited training and integrated into courses to improve the learner's experience.

ボットによるWebサービスの不正利用対策として,CAPTCHAと呼ばれる反転チューリングテストが利用されている.Webサイトへの導入のしやすさや回答方式の理解のしやすさから,文字列の画像を用いたCAPTCHA方式が広く普及している.しかし,ボットによる文字認識技術の発展が著しく,高い確率でテストが突破されるなど,その脆弱性が指摘されている.高度化するボットの文字認識技術に対抗し,解読難度を高くしたCAPTCHAや画像識別などの人間の高度な能力を利用するCAPTCHAが提案されているが,利便性が低いことや特定の攻撃に弱い点が問題となっている.本稿では,人間特有の画像認識能力を利用することで,利便性を保ち十分な堅牢性を持つ新たなCAPTCHA方式を提案する.提案手法は,判定に利用する提示画像に正答の文字列を含まないようにすることで文字認識攻撃に耐性を持たせた.また,提示画像には,人間が画像を補完して認識できる程度の妨害図形を付加し,堅牢性を向上させた.提案手法の有効性を確認するため,画像CAPTCHA方式において考えられる攻撃への耐性を考察し,利便性の評価としてアンケートによるユーザビリティ評価を行った.その結果,システム実装に必要な妨害図形の量に関する閾値を明らかにし,提案手法が攻撃に対して十分な耐性を持ち,ユーザビリティが優れていることを示した.A reversal turing test called CAPTCHA is used in many webservice sites to prevent the automatic program called bots from making unauthorized accounts. The CAPTCHA with images of correct answer string, called as the text-based CAPTCHA, is widely prevalent because of an ease implementing in the website. The optical character recognition technologies enable bots solve the text-based CAPTCHA automatically. Any researchers have pointed out the vulnerability of the text-based CAPTCHA. Absorbing the vulnerability of the text-based CAPTCHA, the image-based CAPTCHA is proposed, which use the human abilities to discern objects in images. However, the existing image-based CAPTCHAs also have problems about usability and robustness. In this paper, we propose a new image-based CAPTCHA using images without a correct answer string and with obstruction figures, to achieve high usability and robustness. In order to confirm a effectiveness of the proposed method, we argue to absorb some considerable attacks in the image-based CAPTCHA, and conduct assessment of usability through our questionnaire. The results show that the proposed system absorb the attacks adequately and has usability.

Characterization of states, the essential components of the underlying energy landscapes, is one of the most intriguing subjects in single-molecule (SM) experiments due to the existence of noise inherent to the measurements. Here we present a method to extract the underlying state sequences from experimental SM time-series. Taking into account empirical error and the finite sampling of the time-series, the method extracts a steady-state network which provides an approximation of the underlying effective free energy landscape. The core of the method is the application of rate-distortion theory from information theory, allowing the individual data points to be assigned to multiple states simultaneously. We demonstrate the method's proficiency in its application to simulated trajectories as well as to experimental SM fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) trajectories obtained from isolated agonist binding domains of the AMPA receptor, an ionotropic glutamate receptor that is prevalent in the central nervous system.

近年,プライバシを保護しながら統計分析を行うことができる技術として,データを撹乱してプライバシを保護し,その後データの分布を推定して得る (再構築と呼ぶ),撹乱再構築法が注目されている.従来の撹乱再構築法では,元データに対する一切の仮定をおかず,元データの分布を推定することから,精度良く再構築を行うためには大量のデータを必要としていた.しかしながら,実際には再構築に十分なデータ数がない場合も多く,そのような際でも精度よく再構築したいニーズがある.そこで,十分にデータがない場合でも精度よく再構築を行えるよう,分布の推定によく用いられる有限混合モデルと呼ばれる確率分布を仮定した新たな再構築法を提案する.
