一般に、映画やテレビのような映像メディアは、映像だけでは成り立たない。必ず音を伴っている。映像に伴う音は、映像作品の一部と言っていいであろう。我々は、一連の印象評定実験により、音が映像の印象に、映像が音の印象に影響を及ぼすことを明らかにしてきた。実験結果は、視聴覚の処理レベルに応じた、様々な視覚と聴覚の相互作用の存在を示唆するものであった。また、音と映像の調和感には、構造的調和と意味的調和の2つの側面があることが確認できた。我々が得た知見は、新しいタイプの映像メディアにおける効果的な視聴覚コミュニケーションの構築に寄与するものと期待できる。

A 12-week-old female Wire-haired miniature dachshund presented with non-progressive ataxia and hypermetria. Due to the animal’s clinical history and symptoms, cerebellar malformations were suspected. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detected bilateral ventriculomegaly, dorsal displacement of the cerebellar tentorium, a defect in the cerebellar tentorium and a large fluid-filled cystic structure that occupied the regions where the cerebellar vermis and occipital lobes are normally located. The abovementioned cystic structure and the defect in the cerebellar tentorium were comparable to those seen in humans with Dandy-Walker syndrome. However, the presence of the cystic structure in the occipital lobe region was unique to the present case. During necropsy, the MRI findings were confirmed, but the etiology of the condition was not determined.

Background: Genetically modified mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising approach to the treatment of cardiac injury after myocardial infarction (MI). Methods and Results: Rat MSCs were transduced with adenovirus containing human tissue kallikrein (TK) gene (TK-MSCs), and they secreted human TK into culture medium. Cultured TK-MSCs were more resistant to hypoxia-induced apoptosis and exhibited reduced caspase-3 activity compared to control GFP-MSCs. The effect of TK-MSC injection on cardiac injury was evaluated in rats at 1 and 14 days after MI. At 1 day after MI, human TK expression in the myocardium was associated with improved cardiac function and decreased inflammatory cell accumulation, proinflammatory gene expression and apoptosis. The beneficial effect of TK-MSCs against apoptosis was verified in cultured cardiomyocytes, as TK-MSC-conditioned medium suppressed hypoxia-induced apoptosis and caspase-3 activity, and increased Akt phosphorylation. At 2 weeks after MI, TK-MSCs improved cardiac function, decreased infarct size, attenuated cardiac remodeling, and promoted neovascularization, as compared to GFP-MSCs. Furthermore, the TK-MSC-conditioned medium, containing elevated vascular endothelial growth factor levels, stimulated the proliferation, migration and tube formation of cultured human endothelial cells. Conclusions: Our results indicate that TK-modified MSCs provide enhanced protection against cardiac injury, apoptosis and inflammation, and promote neovascularization after MI, leading to cardiac function improvement.

Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a specific transporter of retinol and was recently identified as an adipokine potentially involved in type 2 diabetes in humans and rodents. However, the function and structure of feline RBP4 have not been reported. In this study, we describe the molecular cloning and expression analysis of feline RBP4. The complete feline RBP4 cDNA encodes a precursor protein comprising an 18 amino acid signal peptide and a 183 amino acid mature protein. Feline RBP4 was mapped to chromosome D2. Mature feline RBP4 is 83–94% homologous to the RBPs of humans, cows and rodents. RT-PCR analysis revealed feline RBP4 expression in liver and adipose tissues.

Anomalous phenomena precursory to the 1891 Nobi earthquake of magnitude 8.0 are collected mostly based on the existing results of the enquiry investigation conducted soon after the earthquake. Precursor data amounting to 202 in number become available along with their precursor times. They are rumbling or detonation, anomalous animal behaviour, earthquake light, changes in underground water/hot springs and so on.It appears that the number of earthquake precursor tend to increase at about 100 days before the main shock. About 10 days preceding the shock, the increasing rate becomes much accelerated reaching a frequency peak having a precursor time of 1 day or so. Such a tendency of precursor appearance is much the same as that for the 1923 Kanto, 1944 Tonankai and 1978 Izu-Oshima Kinkai earthquakes although slight differences may be observed. The tendency that the number of precursor decreases as the distance between the epicenter and an observation spot increases is also confirmed.In light of these precursors detected by human sense in association with the Nobi earthquake as well as other large earthquakes in Japan, attention should be paid to precursors of this class along with geophysical precursors in future earthquakes.
