『肩をすくめるアトラス』(1957年)に対する保守主義言論界から放たれた悪意に満ちた書評に応えて,アメリカの保守主義者たちの思想の矛盾と哲学的立脚点の曖昧さに対するアイン・ランドの攻撃が始まった.アイン・ランドとアメリカ保守主義の対立は決定的になった.以下のようにアイン・ランドは主張した.保守主義者たちは,建国の理念を寿ぐ.しかし,建国の理念が必然的に導き出す政治経済体制であるところの資本主義を明確に支持しないのは,なぜか.彼女の定義による資本主義とは,長期的視野に基づいた合理的自己利益を実現したい個人が,そのような個人と,各自の労働による生産物を,互恵的に交換することである.資本主義の弊害は,資本主義の過剰から起きるのではなく,資本主義の欠如から起きる.道徳としての資本主義を理解しない保守主義者たちは,利他主義の道徳を市民に強制する国家主義(リベラル)に敗北するしかない.さらに彼らは,アメリカが伝統を打破して建国されたことを忘れている.伝統を守ると言いつつ,現状維持したいだけである.また,アメリカの保守主義者が,家族を過度に重視するのは,一種の部族主義,集団主義である.個人の独立と自由を守るべく王制を否定し,共和国を史上初めて立ち上げたアメリカ建国の祖(Founding Fathers)は,人間の知力,理性以外に頼るものはなかった.しかし,現代の保守主義者は,人間の理性の力を認めず,政教分離したはずのアメリカで宗教を奉じ,神の存在に疑問を持つ知性の自由を恐れる.Ayn Rand's break with conservatism was caused by the publication of Atlas Shrugged in 1957. She was ostracized from American conservatives'circle.Ayn Rand's most specific attack on conservatism was developed in her essay, "Conservatism,an Obituary." Rand said as follows:The most crucial problem is that the conservatives do not stand for capitalism, because conservatives evade the conflict between capitalism and the morality of altruism; USA was founded on capitalism whose principle is that man has the inalienable rights to exist for his/her own sake, neither sacrificing himself/herself to others nor sacrificing others to himself/herself, and that men must deal with one another as traders by voluntary choice to mutual benefits; altruism holds that man has no right to exist for his/her own sake; self-sacrifice is his/her highest moral duty, virtue and value; the social systems based on altruism are socialism, fascism, Nazism,communism and statism, which immolate men for the benefit of the group, the tribe, the society and the state.Ayn Rand believed that conservatives and she shared the political philosophy, Enlightenment thought, emphasizing reason and individualism, on which USA was based. But some conservatives defend capitalism on the ground of man's depravity. Because men are lack of rationality, no man may be entrusted with the responsibility. They say that a free society is the proper way of life for human beings as imperfect creatures. They deny the power of man's mind as his/her basic means of survival. They also desecrate Western civilization which was founded as the product of reason and rationality.Ayn Rand also criticizes the worship of "tradition" of conservatives: some conservatives uphold the status quo, the given, regardless of whether it is good or bad, right or wrong, though USA was created by men who broke with all political traditions. Rand maintains that conservative obsession with the "Family" was a sort of tribalism; the Family is an institution that undercuts the individual's independence and autonomy.

This study examines young students' views of idols' romances. Statistical analysis of data collected from 171 university students reveals that the Sakamichi group is more popular among students than the AKB48 group; students tend to require idols to have comprehensive features and accept idols' past romances. They also consider many idols to have a secret significant other and are not opposed to them concealing the secret. Regression analysis also finds that fans of the Sakamichi group, particularly those of Nogizaka46, show a tendency for romantic fixation on a particular member, and female students have a more realistic view of idols' romances.

In this paper I report two kinds of sound changes in Kagoshima dialect. First, I report close vowel's changes, such as [a?] (<aki, 'autumn'), [a?] (<aʒi, 'taste'), [a?] (<abu, 'horsefly'), [a?] (<aku, 'harshness'). These changes, commonly called 'nisshoka', are caused by devoicing final [i] or [u]. Second, I report alveolar's changes in Segami dialect, spoken in Kami-Koshiki island, Kagoshima prefecture, such as [arama] (<atama, 'head'), [abuja] (<abura, 'oil'), [neːzii] (neːzu, 'temperature'), [kuːnu] (<kudzu, 'trash'). In this dialect, these changes occurred very systematically, and so the distinction between /t/, /r/, /c/ and /d/ was not lost after the changes.

0.1%以下の薄い食塩水を陽極と陰極が隔膜で仕切られた電解槽で電気分解すると,陽極側に低pH(2.2~2.7)で有効塩素濃度20~60ppmの電解水を生成する装置が開発されている。強酸性電解水と呼ばれるこの電解水は,メチシリン耐性黄色ブドウ球菌(MRSA)や薬剤耐性緑膿菌など耐性菌を含む広範な病原細菌に著効を示す。主たる殺菌基盤は次亜塩素酸で,その殺菌機構にはヒドロキシラジカルが主役的に関与すると考えられている。強酸性電解水は,活性は高いが不安定なために市販されておらず,電解装置を現場に設置してユーザーが必要なときに作製し,新鮮なうちに使用する。すなわち,次亜塩素酸の良さを活かし,欠点を克服した新技術といえる。厚生省が手指や内視鏡の洗浄消毒を認めているほか,環境や血液透析機,さらに褥瘡や創部などの洗浄消毒に使用されている。手荒れが少なく,毒性や濃度も低いので,人にも環境にもやさしいなど利点が多い。タンパク性有機物に弱いが,使用対象を考慮した使い方により洗浄消毒の実効を上げられるので,今後利用が拡大すると思われる。

巨大分子の電子状態を計算する手法の1つとして、Fragment 分子軌道(FMO)法がある。FMO法は分子をフラグメントに分割して計算することにより、通常の分子軌道(MO)計算では計算不可能な巨大分子の電子状態を計算できる。FMO法の計算精度およびコストはフラグメントの分割方法に大きく依存する。我々は、密度汎関数法(DFT)に基づくFMO法を独自に開発し、これを用いてDNAの電子状態を塩基分割及び塩基対分割の二種類のフラグメント分割方法で計算した。これらの計算から得られた分子の全エネルギーとMO分布について通常のDFT法による結果と比較した結果、塩基ごとに分割したFMO計算は、塩基対ごとに分割したFMO計算と同程度の計算精度で、全エネルギーとMO特性を得ることができることが明らかになった。

タンパク質は生命現象を研究するうえでの要石的存在であるが,近年科学技術の進歩によってその分子構造,複雑な立体構造までわかってきた.この巨大分子が,タンパク質によってきめられたアミノ酸配列順序に従って生合成された後いつしか独特の機能をもつ立体構造をとるのは,いくつかの試験管内実験結果から,熱力学的に安定な方向にすすむからと推定されている.一方合成ポリペプチド鎖は棒状のα-ヘリックスとなることがわかっているが,これもまた高分子のもつ自由エネルギーの大小に関係した問題として取り扱えるのである.そこでタンパク質や合成ポリペプチド鎖のコンフォメーションと, 自由エネルギーの一部である構成原子間の相互作用エネルギーとの関係を現在わかっている段階まで記述し,この方向の研究の状況を読者に紹介したいと思う.

Douglas–Kroll (DK) 法は,ユニタリ変換を繰り返すことで外場ポテンシャル存在下でのDiracスピノルの大成分と小成分を分離する方法である.DK変換はFoldy–Wouthuysen (FW) 変換 の拡張として捉えることができ,FW変換での展開パラメータである光速のかわりに外場ポテンシャルを展開パラメータとする.このレビューではDK法の理論面と実用面を中心に紹介する.

In the Tamba Plateau, an earthquake swarm area in the Kinki district, Central Japan, seismicity was activated just after the Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake (M7.3), which occurred in an adjacent area in 1995. We found that micro-earthquake activities in the Tamba Plateau corresponded to moon phase. Occurrences of micro-earthquakes increased after a new moon and a full moon during 1995 and 1996. Before 1995, such a correlation could not be found. The present study suggests a possibility that the stress change caused by the Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake made seismicity in the Tamba Plateau sensitive to tidal forces.

本居宣長『古事記伝』に描かれた太陽神アマテラスの像は、中世的に変貌したアマラテスにたいする「古代神話」の復権として見られてきた。しかし宣長のアマテラス=太陽説は、十八世紀における西洋天文学の知識、とくに『真暦考』などに示された地球説、太陽暦の受容と不可分なものである。そこには宣長が導いたアマテラスの「普遍性」が、十八世紀の科学・天文学に支えられていることが見てとれる。本稿では天文学と神話解釈の問題を「中世日本紀」の世界にまで遡り、とくに宋学系天文学と吉田兼倶の日本紀言説との接点を再検討しつつ、さらに渋川春海との比較を通して、宣長のアマテラス像の固有性を「近世神話」として解読する視点を提示する。

To date, numerous studies have reported on the antidiabetic properties of various plant extracts through inhibition of carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzymes. The objective of this research was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of the hydroxytyrosol and the oleuropein against α-amylase and α-glucosidase. The hydroxytyrosol was purified from olive leaves. The result shows that the hydroxytyrosol had the strongest α-glucosidase inhibitory effect with IC50 values of 150 μM with mild inhibition against α-amylase. The enzyme kinetic studies, using Lineweaver–Burk indicated that, in the presence of the hydroxytyrosol, the Michaelis–Menton constant (Km) remained constant but the maximal velocity (Vmax) decreased, revealing a non-competitive type of inhibition with inhibition constants; Ki for the formation of the inhibitor-enzyme complex and Kis for the formation of the inhibitor-enzyme-substrate complex of 104.3 and 150.1 μM, respectively. On the other hand, oleuropein showedan uncompetitive inhibition. The concentrations used in this work were below cytotoxic levels observed at 400 μM. However, at 600 μM, the hydroxytyrosol significantly decreased viability of the Caco-2 cells (p < 0.05) and in the case of the oleuropein, there’s an increase in cell number compared to control (p < 0.05). These results suggest that the hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein are two potential effective α-glucosidase inhibitors for management of postprandial hyperglycemia.
