This paper focuses on the narrative of Elizabeth Knapp's possession in 1671 and attempts to explain the occurrence of witchcraft as a form of religious enthusiasm. This narrative is well known as a detailed and quintessentially demoniac description in early New England. Because social expectations within the historical setting determine the authenticity of possession, the narrative reflects the kind of religious experiences that ministers and people in the colony shared. During Knapp's possession, the central issue was whether she had signed the devil's compact. Her master and pastor, Samuel Willard, cautiously and patiently led her to the confession, which was a ritual of cleansing and restoring her to the divine territory. Knapp responded to him well. Both of them faithfully fulfilled roles consistent with the contemporary idea of witch-craft despite a slight difference in ministerial ideas and popular beliefs of it. When Knapp confessed, she suffered from such pains and displayed spectacular body languages, both of which were archetypal features of religious enthusiasm. She even wanted God's goodness during those fits, although she was mostly under the control of the devil. As a truly godly person in her heart, Knapp wanted to be saved. Her possession can be then explained as a somatic conversion experience, which was extraordinary and would not have been accepted by the Puritan orthodoxy. Thus, witchcraft has its place in the history of religious enthusiasm in New England from heresies such as Antinomians to revivals such as Jonathan Edwards.

グローバリズムの進展にともないますます流動化する人間社会について, 従来の地域的区切りで分類・把握し, その特徴に合致した施策を展開することは困難となりつつある. このような「領域性原理」による管理・統治は限界を呈している一方で, 「非領域性原理」によるガバナンス, すなわち, 区割りによる領域を定めない普遍的な管理・統治はその方法論が確立しておらず, 実効性を持ち得ていない. 本稿は, こうした社会科学, 人文科学上のジレンマに対して新たな視角を提供するため, 河川工学や環境科学で一般的になっている「流域圏」という圏域把握を「領域性」の文脈で捉えなおすものである. 本考察をすすめるうえで, 対象としたのは加古川流域である. この水系は, 歴史的境界をはじめ従来から流域内の文化的一体性が希薄であり, 従って, 現在の多様な文化的背景を持つ, 逆に言えば帰属を把握しづらい人聞が混住する社会を鳥瞰搬する枠構造としての「自然領域」として想定するには好適だからである. この観点から本稿では, 液状化し, 流動性が高くなっている人間社会におけることばの多様性を継承する枠組みのひとつとして, 流域国という舞台を適用可能か, 「加古川流域」を対象に考察する. 本稿を通じて過疎等に起因した従来の地域コミュニティの崩壊を通じて, 「地域意識」がソフトな, もしくはヴアーチャルな繋がりに移行している中, 治水, 水資源の確保, 環境保全において鍵概念となっている「流域圏」を, これまでの領域概念を補完する, 新たな領域性として認知する意義を論じた.

This paper examined factors that lead university students to pursue a teaching career by focusing on their family backgrounds, A questionnaire survey was conducted among students in 18 universities to evaluate their father's profession, level of education in family, experience of lesson (e.g. sports, cramming school) in childhood and their outlook of the future. The results show that among the students pursuing teaching, the majority of their fathers are white-•collared businessmen, and less blue-collared businessmen and farmers. Further, these students have a stronger cultural and educational experience in their family. In addition, male students tend toward sports, while female students take music lessons in their childhood. On investigating the valuable factor in their future, it is found that students pursuing teaching are less status-oriented and more family-oriented. Finally, the author examined which factors affect the aspiration toward a teaching career from the above mentioned variables. Using multinomial logistic regression, variables such as level of education in the family, experience in sports and music, and family-orientation, raises the possibility of a student aspiring to be a teacher. In addition, it is inferred that family-oriented disposition of would-be teachers is related to "familism”, which is regarded as a tradition in teachers' culture.

This paper attempts to clarify the lives of people that socially were becoming individualized by reviewing theories of G. H. Mead and E. H. Erikson of the relationship between individual and society. They were organizing their own lives rather than adapting them to their life course provided by society. The theories of Mead and Erikson, though they had been proposed in the early 20th century, were still eff ective to consider their own lives to be organized. Because of this, it was valuable to review and consider these theories. As a result, I found that the relationship between self and community could be located in the relationship between individual and society by reviewing Mead’s interactional social psychology, Erikson’s identity theory, and Mead’s social theory of practice. In this mediation, individuals’ selves were constructed in the communities and those communities consisting of society were also reconstructed by people’s involvement.
