Vitamin E is a natural lipophilic vitamin, and the most famous function of vitamin E is an antioxidant activity. Because we have α-tocopherol transfer protein, many vitamin E-related reports are about α-tocopherol. Recently, other vitamin E isoforms, tocotrienols are focusing. Because tocotrienols have unique biological functions such as induction of apoptosis, neuroprotective and anti-obesity effects. Tocotrienols contain in annatto, palm, whole wheat and rice bran. Rice is a typical food in the East Asian countries and Japan. Recently, intake of whole rice is a popular in young women of Japan. Previously, we demonstrated that treatment with tocotrienols on the neuronal cells shows a strong antioxidant effect compared to the tocopherols. In this review, I introduce about neuroprotective and anti-obesity effects of tocotrienols. I would like to show daily intake of whole rice is very good for our health in this review.

シェリーといえば,ポーの「アモンティリヤードの樽」,それから「007ダイアモンドは永遠に」で,“There is no year for sherry”(シェリーには年号はないよ)といわれたジェームス・ボンドが“I was referring to the original vintage on which the sherry is based sir. 1851. Unmistakable.”(私がいっているのはこのシェリーのベースとなっている最初のビンテージさ,1851年,まちがいない)と切り返す姿である。しかし,私自身,シェリーに関する知識は少なく「ソレラシステム」ではなく正しくは「クリアデラとソレラのシステム」であることを本稿で始めて知った。さらに,ポートやマデイラについては良質なマデイラやポート自体最近まで味わったことがなかった。酒精強化とともに酸化や熱という酒には大敵とされる条件を使って作り出す独特の香味,それを生み出した歴史と風土,大変興味深い解説である。

We present a case of pure puffer fish poisoning who developed prolonged ataxia without persistent muscle weakness. Impaired peripheral nerve conduction was suggested to be the cause of the prolonged ataxia. A 40-year-old male, a licensed puffer fish chef, tasted a piece of puffer fish liver when his stomach was empty. Approximately 20 minutes later he recognized numbness in the fingers and lips, the onset of generalized muscle weakness and paresthesia. He was admitted to our hospital for the management of progressive motor weakness one hour after ingestion. Spontaneous breathing disappeared 90 minutes after ingestion. After six hours of mechanical ventilation, spontaneous breathing resumed. Motor paralysis and paresthesia improved within 20 hours, while dizziness persisted for several days, which was not attributable to alcohol in this case. Neurological examination showed prolonged ataxia; he could not stand on one foot until the third hospital day. Serial peripheral nerve conduction velocity studies revealed decreased conduction velocities. In particular, conduction velocities of the sensory nerve were more seriously impaired and required a longer recovery time as compared to those of the motor nerve. Since tetrodotoxin does not affect the central nervous system, such prolonged ataxia in puffer fish poisoning is presumably attributable to decreased peripheral nerve conduction velocities.

It has been shown that probiotic bacteria are effective for the treatment of allergic diseases. As histamine plays a central role in allergic diseases, it is possible that probiotic bacteria affect the allergy-related histamine signaling. Here, we investigated the effect of Lac-B, a mixture of freeze-dried Bifidobacterium infantis and Bifidobacterium longum, on the allergy-related histamine signaling. In the nasal allergy model rats made by sensitization and provocation with toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) for 3 weeks, TDI provocation caused acute allergy–like behaviors along with significant up-regulation of histamine H1 receptor (H1R) and histidine decarboxylase (HDC) mRNA expression, increased HDC activity, histamine content, and [3H]mepyramine binding activity in nasal mucosa. Prolonged treatment with Lac-B (40 mg/rat, p.o.) significantly suppressed both the allergy-like behaviors and all of the above mentioned factors involved in histamine signaling. Our findings indicate that oral administration of Lac-B showed significant anti-allergic effect through suppression of both H1R and HDC gene expression followed by decrease in H1R, HDC protein level, and histamine content. Suppression of histamine signaling may be a novel target of probiotics in preventing allergic diseases.

The author introduces Morris Swadesh's method of lexical statistics or glotnchronology to the linguistic circle of Japan, applying it to the comparative study of Old Japanese and modern dialects.He discusses its significance as a comparative method of related languages, and points out the following two major advancements. While the comparative method so far concerns the phonology and grammar rather than the vocabulary, Swadesh deals with the latter. Swadesh's method is statistical and accordingly more objective than the usual comparative method.Although it is possible to comment critically on the method at several points, its effectiveness in general should be acknowledged. For instance, there are no“concepts and experiences common to all human groups”(Salish Internal Relationships, 157), because the dispositions of the speakers of different languages are often different even to “the same things”, that is, the “sememes”(as the author calls them) of synonymous words of any two languages are often not identical. Thus, Japanese /me/«eye» denotes the eye which opens and closes rather than the eye-ball, while (Chakhar) Mongol/nüdä/ which is the only word for “eye” denotes the latter rather than the former. Nevertheless we can find words which refer to things and events common to all human groups, and thus we can generally fill Swadesh's questionnaire.

記憶を補助する外部手段として「手に直にメモを書く行動」について,なぜ ある人はこの手段を用いて,ある人は用いないか,大学生を対象とした質問紙調査によって,その要因をパーソナリティ要因も含めて総合的な視点から分析を行った。その結果,「手にメモをする行動」をとる群の人ほど,他のいくつかの「し忘れ防止手段」も併用していることが明らかになった.また,ビッグ・ファイブ・パーソナリティの要因については,メモ経験群は,ものごとに現実的に対応する傾向である,「経験への開放性」のスコアが有意に高い傾向があった.すべての結果を総合すると,手にメモをするのは,その人が失敗回避傾向がある気の弱い人だからというよりは,「確実に予定を果たそうとする現実的な行動をとる人」だからというべきだと考えられた.

Intact face perception is an important function for individual identification in highly socialized human community. Recent studies revealed that there are hereditary individual differences on the cognitive skills related to face identification, named congenital⁄hereditary prosopagnosia. The investigation on the congenital⁄hereditary prosopagnosia would advance our understanding of the face identification mechanism, however, has not been conducted with Japanese samples. The development of the Japanese version of the congenital⁄hereditary prosopagnosia screening scale is the first step of the congenital⁄hereditary prosopagnosia study in Japan. In this study, we attempted the translation of the original screening scale into Japanese, and also investigated the relationship between the score of scale and behavioral⁄physiological responses on face stimuli. As a result, we found highly internal consistency and test-retest reliability for the Japanese version of the congenital⁄hereditary prosopagnosia screening scale. Also we have revealed the score was related to some behavioral performances and ERP responses related to the self-face perception.

Telomere length is highly related to cardiovascular diseases. Telomeric zinc finger-associated protein (TZAP) directly binds to telomeric TTAGGG repeats via zinc finger domains and triggers the initiation of the telomere trimming process. However, proteomics analysis of TZAP in cardiomyocytes is slightly unknown. In our study, TZAP was overexpressed by adenovirus transfection in cultured H9c2 cardiomyocytes, and then mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics research strategies, including Gene Ontology analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis, subcellular localizations, predicted functional domains, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis, were performed to explore TZAP-induced potential pathogenesis in cardiomyocytes. A total of 184 upregulated and 228 downregulated differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified among identified 5693 quantifiable proteins in TZAP-overexpressed cardiomyocytes. These DEPs were mainly distributed in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and plasma membrane. DEPs were enriched in biological processes including cardiac muscle cell contraction, acute inflammatory response, cell-cell junction assembly, and macromolecule biosynthetic process. They were enriched in 9 KEGG pathways, including Hippo signaling pathway, protein digestion and absorption, and cytokine receptor interaction, and enriched in 17 protein domains, including translation initiation factor 1A/IF-1, class I histocompatibility antigen, and zinc finger. PPI analysis indicated that TZAP interacted with NDUFC2, Gja1, and HDAC2. Further, as proteins closely related to cardiovascular function, the mRNA levels of BRD4, Gja1, HDAC2, MAP2K3, Plakophilin 4, and Syndecan 1 significantly decreased, while Trpm7, clusterin, and NDUFC2 remarkably increased in TZAP-overexpressed cardiomyocytes by RT-PCR assay, which were consistent with the proteomics analysis. Collectively, we provided candidate proteins and enrichment pathways in TZAP-overexpressed cardiomyocytes, which need further investigation.
