Seimei-gaku, also known as Seimei-Handan, (predicting a person's fortune on the basis of his surname and first name) is a popular fortune-telling method in Japan. It is traditionally believed that this method originated in ancient China and later began to be used in Japan; however, in reality, seimei-gaku was invented in modern Japan. In 1901, Sasaki Mono (1860-1902?), the inventor of Seimei-gaku, used newspapers to awaken the interest of people. This paper aims to explore the relationship between the demand for Seimei-gaku and large-scale publication of popular newspapers in the early twentieth century. Faith in Seimei-gaku was based on the magic of the printed word, and it was created by a media-saturated society. Seimei-gaku can be regarded as a superstition held by typographic man. During this period, the importance of information increased in association with the exponential growth of the market society, and the value of everyday-life experiences in traditional communities declined. Consequently, newspaper became an integral part of people's life. Seimei-gaku is considered to be a part of the information provided by newspapers. It had two prominent types that enabled it to achieve its objectives. One was reading a person's mind, and the other, predicting his future. These are the requisite skills for achieving success in an expansionary economy during the development of a market society.

The structure of the human tendon and ligament is dense organized connective tissue, which includes two basic elements: fibroblast, a fixed cell of connective tissue, and extracellular matrices. The tendon, for instance, has been suggested to consist of 20% collagen, 78% water, and 2% glycosaminoglycans. The fibroblast synthesizes three polypeptide chains, which develop into a triple helix, called a procollagen molecule inside the cell. The procollagen molecules enzymatically secreted from intracellular to extracellular form a tropocollagen. The tropocollagen molecule consists of two amino acids: hydroxyproline and hydroxylysin. The hydroxylysin is the essential component of crosslinks. The cross-links form intra- and intermolecule bounding from one collagen filament to another in order to organize the tropocollogen molecules. They also play a critical role in the mechanical tensile strength within collagenous tissue and function as energy absorber. Therefore, whether the cross-links in collagen fibers are reorganized is an important factor to understand the healing process in the tendon or ligament damaged. The healing process first shows vascular, chemical and cellular reaction to injury. This reaction facilitates the fibroblast to synthesize fibrous protein and collagen. Developing the extracellular matrix, tissue regeneration or scar formation takes place in time. Since the tendon and ligament have relatively poor blood supply, their healing process is slow. Nevertheless, it can be the same as general tissue trauma, which is divided into three phases: 1) inflammatory, 2) proliferative, and 3) remodeling. The purpose of this paper is to review each phase of the healing process.

A mass mortality of sika deer (Cervus nippon) population occurred on Kinkazan Island in northern Japan in the spring of 1984, which followed an unusual cold winter. We collected a sample of 240 deer skulls. All deer were aged and sexed except some fawns. The sex ratio of >1 year old deer was 50: 50, but was skewed toward males compared with the sex ratio obtained in the population census in 1983. The oldest age at death was 12.5 years for males and 15.5 years for females. The frequency was low for young age classes. A relative cumulative frequency curve was constructed to examine the age-specific mortality pattern. The curves of both sexes suggested that mortality was relatively high for fawns and low for adult and prime-aged animals, and that mortality was higher and life span was shorter for males than for females.

Everybody knows Superman, Batman, and Spider-man. However, how much do we know about them? Are they nothing but comic heroes? That may be right. But a comic book can be a very important information tool, namely a media. Also, it is often the case that a media affects people's lives or even reflects our beliefs and religious ideas. Everybody has heard of American comics but we really don't know where they came from and where they are going to. So in this paper, I will investigate the last fifty-year history of American comics, where we can find some superheroes, who also are among the people who have created them. What is good about studying American comics or superheroes? Here I will try to find some of the possible answers.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify how government enlightenment policy was implemented in elementary education in 1930's Japan through an examination of the introduction of Shinto shrine worship to elementary school discipline. In order to analyze this issue, this paper investigates the 1930's Mino Mission Affair that took place in Ogaki city, a city in southwestern Gifu Prefecture. The affair centered on the refusal of elementary school students who belonged to Mino Mission to participate in Shinto shrine worship as a school activity. Mino Mission was established by Sadie Lea Weidner (1875〜1939) as an independent mission without a particular power base. There are already several studies of this affair that clarify the progress of the affair itself. However, these studies fail to analyze the affair as it relates to government enlightenment policy. This paper focuses on the encouragement of shrine worship by the Ministry of Education as well as local government that provided the backdrop for the affair. This paper makes the following conclusions: First, the encouragement of shrine worship was facilitated in Gifu by the close ties of the Gifu-ken Kyoiku-kai (the association of education in Gifu) and the Gifu-ken Shintoku-kai (the association of Shinto in Gifu). The manager of the school affairs section of the Gifu prefectural administration concurrently held the post of president of the Gifu-ken Kyoiku-kai and the Gifu-ken Shintoku-kai. Second, at this time, there was common understanding in the Gifu-ken Kyoiku-kai that the Imperial Rescript on Education was ineffective in addressing elementary school discipline. Shrine worship was seen as one method of instilling discipline into elementary education.
