Evaluations of brain function pre- and intra- operatively has been essential to maintain the quality of life in patients undergoing neurosurgery. These evaluations, which have been developed through studies in epilepsy, are now essential in neurosurgery for brain tumors and vascular diseases. The goal of functional brain mapping followed by function monitoring, is to perform surgery more safely and effectively thereby allowing for better outcomes. When choosing among multiple modern modalities for brain functional evaluation, we should consider the physiological aspects of each of these methods from a view point of functional recovery or compensation. Clinical usefulness and differences between intraoperative electrical stimulation of the cortex and subcortical fibers and clininical symptoms under an awake state to preserve affected or unaffected function during neurosurgery are also discussed. Further consideration of the actual network connecting each eloquent area may ultimately lead to a new concept in neurosurgery as well as in neuroscience itself.

Jpn J Compr Rehabil Sci 2017; 8: 30-36.Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between activities of daily living (ADL) performance and quality of life (QOL) in participants in a home-based rehabilitation program, and to assess the associated changes during the program.Methods: The subjects were participants newly enrolled in home-based rehabilitation in six facilities. The Functional Independence Measure motor subscore was used to evaluate the current ADL performance. We used PGC-MS to evaluate the emotional aspect of QOL, and ADL satisfaction for the cognitive aspect.Results: Participants were divided into two groups: <1 year from onset and >1 year from onset; ADL satisfaction had significantly improved in the latter group (p = 0.008). A strong correlation between ADL performance and ADL satisfaction was found. On the other hand, the correlation between ADL satisfaction and PGC-MS was weaker.Conclusions: The ‘cognitive aspect’ of QOL improved due to the rehabilitation staff’s approach in explaining the participants’ ADL abilities and motivating them to accept their limitations. It is considered that the ‘emotional aspect’ of QOL is difficult to change with only three months of home-based rehabilitation.

We conducted observation system simulation experiments (OSSE) to investigate the effects of water vapor vertical profiles observed by Raman lidar (RL) on forecasts of heavy precipitation in Hiroshima, Japan, on August 19, 2014 using a local ensemble transform Kalman filter. We employed a simulation result similar to reality as nature-run (NR) and performed two OSSEs. In the first experiment (DaQv), conventional observation data and vertical profiles of water vapor mixing ratio in air (qv) estimated from NR were assimilated. In the second experiment (CNTL), only conventional observation data were assimilated. In DaQv, we assumed that the RL was in the low-level inflow that supplied water vapor to the heavy precipitation in Hiroshima. Assimilating qv for several hours increased qv around the RL observation station, especially at low level. The regions modified by the assimilation of qv moved to Hiroshima by low-level inflow, resulting in 9-hour precipitation being approximately 28% greater than that of CNTL, and was thus closer to that of the NR. The OSSEs suggest that water vapor RL observations on the windward side of the heavy precipitation are a useful approach for improving precipitation forecasts.

Altered growth habits and leaf injuries occurring under continuous light are comprehensively reviewed for Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae crops. Continuous light can accelerate growth by providing a high daily light integral, but many species and cultivars develop leaf injuries and abnormal growth. Other environmental factors may alter responses to continuous light.

東北地方太平洋沖地震津波による犠牲者については,同じ浸水深であっても犠牲者率に大きなばらつきがあることが示されているが,それに影響を与えている要因については十分明らかにされていない.本研究は,南三陸町の行政区を分析単位として,ヒアリング調査を行って犠牲者率を整理するとともに,1960年チリ地震津波の被害や地理的条件など,犠牲者率に影響を及ぼす要因について検討した.その結果,従来から指摘されてきた(1)浸水深に加え,(2)1960年チリ地震津波が到達したか,(3)海が見えるか,(4)高台が近くにあるか,が犠牲者率に影響を与えている可能性があることを明らかにした.

Objective. The "bottle to bottle recycling" of PET bottle by chemical process, hydrolysis and re-synthesis of PET resin, was put into practical use in April of 2004 in Japan, and this method was regarded as one of the most promising routes of PET bottle recycle. There are, however, several options of PET bottle recycling that should be examined whether they are really useful or not. In this study, LCA analysis was tried to estimate the effectiveness of several alternatives of PET bottle recycling. A new concept of "Social Energy Consumption", defined as sum of energy inputs for production plus feed stock energy minus total energy loss in our society during the use and recycling of PET bottle, was proposed and used as criteria for estimating the effectiveness of the PET bottle recycling: in other words, energy equivalent of resource conservative quantity was used for estimation of recycling, that is a main characteristic of this study. Results and Discussion. Several case studies were carried out to examine the adequacy of assumed values as well as the estimation procedure adopted in this study. As a result, the reliability of the values and method was confirmed. Results of the case studies indicated that the advantage of the chemical recycle for bottle to bottle is not so larger as was expected than that of material recycle for other products, because energy input for chemical recycle is rather large, however the difference in the quality of products is not taken into account. And it was also found that bottle reproduction from flakes obtained directly by crushing used PET bottle has a better potential advantage, meaning that this recycle route will be worthy of serious consideration although this is not practical in present-day Japan by the ministerial regulation from a hygiene point of view.Conclusions. Thus, there should be more emphasis on the necessity of wide-ranging discussions on the recycle of PET bottle based on objective and quantitative LCA investigation from the stand point of, not only CO2 emission, but the social utility of repeated use of petroleum resource.

A 9-year-old neutered male Wire Fox Terrier presented with an 1-month history of hindlimb paresis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a contrast-enhanced mass at the level of the L2 vertebral canal. The dog became paraplegic with no deep perception of the hindlimbs, and the mass was surgically removed. The histopathological diagnosis was of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The dog suffered a relapse of right hindlimb ataxia at 225 days after the surgery. The dog died 434 days after the surgery. Necropsy found a large mass in the abdominal cavity invading from the L2-nerve. This is the first report of MPNST invading the abdominal cavity through the nerve root.

本論文では,姿勢変動にロバストな顔照合を実現するため,入力された顔画像を複数の異なる姿勢の顔画像へ正規化し,それら正規化顔画像から抽出した特徴量ベクトルを連結した連結特徴量ベクトルを用いる顔照合アルゴリズムを提案する.入力された顔画像を正面から撮影した顔と左右斜め上から撮影した顔の3種類の姿勢の顔画像へと変換し,それら3姿勢の顔画像から抽出した特徴量ベクトルを連結した連結特徴量ベクトルを用いて,特徴量の変換行列を学習する.3姿勢の顔画像から抽出した特徴量をひとつの高次元な特徴空間で学習することで,別々の特徴空間で学習した場合よりも最適な特徴量変換行列を構築する.3姿勢の特徴量ベクトルを別々に特徴量変換して照合スコアを統合する手法と比較し,多くの姿勢について照合精度が向上することから,提案手法の有効性を示す.

[目的]本研究は身体の柔軟性の評価である指床間距離(Finger-Floor Distance:以下FFD)を用いて,睡眠前後でのFFD の変化を明らかにするために行った。[対象と方法]健常大学生34名(男性14名,女性20名)を対象とした。朝と夜のFFD と睡眠時間を3日間測定した。なおFFD は,①夜の入浴前と②朝の起床後に測定した。[結果]FFD の値は朝の方が夜よりも有意に高値であった。[結語]睡眠後に身体の柔軟性が低下していることが明らかとなった。
