Synthesis of (1S,2R)-1-[(E)-hex-1-en-1-yl]-2-vinylcyclopropane (dictyopterene A), which was isolated from the essential oil of algae of the genus Dictyopteris in Hawaii, has been demonstrated using optically active tributylstannylcyclopropane as a starting chiral synthon.

Developments in the use of genetically modified plants for human and livestock health and phytoremediation were surveyed using information retrieved from Entrez PubMed, Chemical Abstracts Service, Google, congress abstracts and proceedings of related scientific societies, scientific journals, etc. Information obtained was classified into 8 categories according to the research objective and the usage of the transgenic plants as 1: nutraceuticals (functional foods), 2: oral vaccines, 3: edible curatives, 4: vaccine antigens, 5: therapeutic antibodies, 6: curatives, 7: diagnostic agents and reagents, and 8: phytoremediation. In total, 405 cases were collected from 2006 to 2010. The numbers of cases were 120 for nutraceuticals, 65 for oral vaccines, 25 for edible curatives, 36 for vaccine antigens, 36 for therapeutic antibodies, 76 for curatives, 15 for diagnostic agents and reagents, and 40 for phytoremediation (sum of each cases was 413 because some reports were related to several categories). Nutraceuticals, oral vaccines and curatives were predominant. The most frequently used edible crop was rice (51 cases), and tomato (28 cases), lettuce (22 cases), potato (18 cases), corn (15 cases) followed.

This study aimed to determine how much time can be saved with the use of unit-of-use packaging for prescription drugs as compared with bulk packaging in community pharmacies as well as to determine the number of errors. In a simulation, mock prescriptions were dispensed either in unit-of-use packages or by transferring medication from a bulk container, and a time study was conducted to measure the time spent on dispensing and prescription auditing by pharmacists. Pharmacists' and patients' degree of satisfaction was also surveyed. The time saved with unit-of-use packaging was 66.25 s per prescription. The sole dispensing error that was found in the study occurred with bulk dispensing. Among both pharmacists and patients, many were of the opinion that dispensing with unit-of-use packaging was preferable to bulk dispensing. Unit-of-use packaging shortens the time that pharmacists spend on dispensing activities and increases the efficiency of their work. Unit-of-use packaging is also thought to reduce the number of counting errors.

This paper proposes a LCA application for evaluating the environmental impacts in the planning phase by the provision of railway systems. The Superconducting MAGnetically LEVitated (MAGLEV) transport system is examined as a case study. Emission factors for standardized infrastructure are introduced for simplification of the inventory analysis with the data availability. The change of LC-CO2 emission by shifting from the existing inter-regional transport systems (Shinkansen, ordinary railways, airplanes and passenger cars) to the MAGLEV are forecasted by the Extended Life Cycle Environmental Load (ELCEL) concept. An eco-efficiency indicator, considering the performances, is defined and the alternative transport system are evaluated. Also, several environmental load emissions are integrated by the LIME (Life-cycle Impact assessment Method based on Endpoint modeling).

インターネット政策声明を執行可能なルールとすることを目指した連邦通信委員会(FCC)の努力は、Comcast事件とその後の控訴審判決での敗訴の経験を経て、2010年12月にオープンインターネット命令として結実した。ブロードバンド事業者が遵守すべき開示義務、公平義務および接続義務を定める本命令は、ビジネスの自由を求めるプロバイダにとっては行動の自由の制約に他ならない。本命令の有効性に関し、2014年1月14日に巡回控訴裁判所が下した結論は、開示義務以外の有効性を否定しており、一見すると、プロバイダ側の主張が全面的に認められFCCの努力が無に帰したかのように見える判決ではある。しかしながら、詳細に評価してみると、ネットワーク中立性問題に対する規制権限を確立し、しかも命令が本来実現しようとしていたはずの効果にはほとんど影響がないという、FCCにとっては実質的な勝訴に他ならず、むしろプロバイダ側にとっては何の問題解決にもならなかった可能性がある。

本研究の目的はFRT距離に影響を与えていると考えられている項目を抽出し,身長,年齢,左右のCOPの前後長,体幹前傾角度,歩行速度のそれぞれの関係を検証した。重回帰分析によるFRT距離の予測検定では,標準化重回帰係数 βにて身長と体幹前傾角度のみ有意な変数を得られた。また,左右足によるCOP前後長の比較では有意な相関がみられた。よってバランス能力の評価として実施する場合,身長による正規化の必要性を示唆している。加えて前方リーチ動作に伴う運動戦略において股関節の運動である体幹の前傾能力が重要であることも判明した。また,そのCOPの結果から利き足等左右側の影響をうかがうことはできなかった。

We propose an approach of estimating individual growth curves based on the birthday information of Japanese Thoroughbred horses, with considerations of the seasonal compensatory growth that is a typical characteristic of seasonal breeding animals. The compensatory growth patterns appear during only the winter and spring seasons in the life of growing horses, and the meeting point between winter and spring depends on the birthday of each horse. We previously developed new growth curve equations for Japanese Thoroughbreds adjusting for compensatory growth. Based on the equations, a parameter denoting the birthday information was added for the modeling of the individual growth curves for each horse by shifting the meeting points in the compensatory growth periods. A total of 5,594 and 5,680 body weight and age measurements of Thoroughbred colts and fillies, respectively, and 3,770 withers height and age measurements of both sexes were used in the analyses. The results of predicted error difference and Akaike Information Criterion showed that the individual growth curves using birthday information better fit to the body weight and withers height data than not using them. The individual growth curve for each horse would be a useful tool for the feeding managements of young Japanese Thoroughbreds in compensatory growth periods.

The objective of this study was to investigate the disinfection efficiencies of E. coli and coliforms during the solar disinfection (SODIS) process with the presence of zero-valent iron and/or citric acid. The experimental results from a series of batch experiments showed that a treatment with neither sole UV-A (365 nm wavelength), zero-valent iron, nor citric acid effectively decreased the fraction of viable E. coli and coliforms under the experimental conditions investigated in this study. However, the simultaneous addition of zero-valent iron and citric acid during the UV-A illumination effectively decreased the fraction of viable E. coli and coliforms, meaning the co-existence of these three are required to effectively produce oxidants such as hydroxyl radical and ferryl ion. It was also demonstrated through field experiments that the technology proposed in this study can be easily implemented in our daily life using lemon juice rich in citric acid.

Our Health Care Systems, especially our hospitals, were designed primarily to provide episodic care for acute occurrences of single diseases. With our aging population and the predominance of chronic diseases, highly integrated and coordinated care is required. This demands a “systems re-design”, not just making the old system better. Additionally, higher expectations of patients and families to be involved in and co-direct their care, and the advent of rapidly evolving mobile information technology (mHealth), requires an innovative and “agile” approach to this re-design process. To be sustainable, innovation must improve the experience of care for both patients and health care providers, as well as produce clinical and financial outcomes that are at least as good as or better than current care. Health Systems Centres of Innovation can be provide “new ways of thinking” about health care, and the creativity to sustainably re-design our Health Care Systems.
