A 12-week-old female Wire-haired miniature dachshund presented with non-progressive ataxia and hypermetria. Due to the animal’s clinical history and symptoms, cerebellar malformations were suspected. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detected bilateral ventriculomegaly, dorsal displacement of the cerebellar tentorium, a defect in the cerebellar tentorium and a large fluid-filled cystic structure that occupied the regions where the cerebellar vermis and occipital lobes are normally located. The abovementioned cystic structure and the defect in the cerebellar tentorium were comparable to those seen in humans with Dandy-Walker syndrome. However, the presence of the cystic structure in the occipital lobe region was unique to the present case. During necropsy, the MRI findings were confirmed, but the etiology of the condition was not determined.

Background: Genetically modified mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising approach to the treatment of cardiac injury after myocardial infarction (MI). Methods and Results: Rat MSCs were transduced with adenovirus containing human tissue kallikrein (TK) gene (TK-MSCs), and they secreted human TK into culture medium. Cultured TK-MSCs were more resistant to hypoxia-induced apoptosis and exhibited reduced caspase-3 activity compared to control GFP-MSCs. The effect of TK-MSC injection on cardiac injury was evaluated in rats at 1 and 14 days after MI. At 1 day after MI, human TK expression in the myocardium was associated with improved cardiac function and decreased inflammatory cell accumulation, proinflammatory gene expression and apoptosis. The beneficial effect of TK-MSCs against apoptosis was verified in cultured cardiomyocytes, as TK-MSC-conditioned medium suppressed hypoxia-induced apoptosis and caspase-3 activity, and increased Akt phosphorylation. At 2 weeks after MI, TK-MSCs improved cardiac function, decreased infarct size, attenuated cardiac remodeling, and promoted neovascularization, as compared to GFP-MSCs. Furthermore, the TK-MSC-conditioned medium, containing elevated vascular endothelial growth factor levels, stimulated the proliferation, migration and tube formation of cultured human endothelial cells. Conclusions: Our results indicate that TK-modified MSCs provide enhanced protection against cardiac injury, apoptosis and inflammation, and promote neovascularization after MI, leading to cardiac function improvement.

Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a specific transporter of retinol and was recently identified as an adipokine potentially involved in type 2 diabetes in humans and rodents. However, the function and structure of feline RBP4 have not been reported. In this study, we describe the molecular cloning and expression analysis of feline RBP4. The complete feline RBP4 cDNA encodes a precursor protein comprising an 18 amino acid signal peptide and a 183 amino acid mature protein. Feline RBP4 was mapped to chromosome D2. Mature feline RBP4 is 83–94% homologous to the RBPs of humans, cows and rodents. RT-PCR analysis revealed feline RBP4 expression in liver and adipose tissues.

Anomalous phenomena precursory to the 1891 Nobi earthquake of magnitude 8.0 are collected mostly based on the existing results of the enquiry investigation conducted soon after the earthquake. Precursor data amounting to 202 in number become available along with their precursor times. They are rumbling or detonation, anomalous animal behaviour, earthquake light, changes in underground water/hot springs and so on.It appears that the number of earthquake precursor tend to increase at about 100 days before the main shock. About 10 days preceding the shock, the increasing rate becomes much accelerated reaching a frequency peak having a precursor time of 1 day or so. Such a tendency of precursor appearance is much the same as that for the 1923 Kanto, 1944 Tonankai and 1978 Izu-Oshima Kinkai earthquakes although slight differences may be observed. The tendency that the number of precursor decreases as the distance between the epicenter and an observation spot increases is also confirmed.In light of these precursors detected by human sense in association with the Nobi earthquake as well as other large earthquakes in Japan, attention should be paid to precursors of this class along with geophysical precursors in future earthquakes.

Aftershock activity of the 1987 Chiba-ken Toho-oki earthquake (M6.7) is investigated using JMA data. It is found that aftershocks during two weeks just after the main shock occurred mostly in a region to the east side of the fault plane which is nearly north-south direction with a steep dip to the east. However, aftershock activity in the area to the west side of the fault plane became high since the beginning of January 1988. The contrast between spatial distribution of aftershocks in December 1987 and that after January 1988 is conspicuous. The later activity was concentrated to a rather small area and the largest aftershock occurred on 16 January in the active region. The mechanism of the largest aftershock was reverse type in contrast to the mechanism of the main shock which was strike slip type. Further, pattern of temporal decrease of aftershock activity deviated notably from the Omori's formula when the later activity was started. All these characteristics suggest that most earthquakes which occurred in the region to the west of the fault plane of the main shock after January 1988 are not the so-called aftershocks in a narrow sense, but that they represent an appearance of a new fracture, which occurrence might be caused by the stress concentration due to the fault motion of the main shock. The phenomenon that aftershock activity in the either one side against a fault plane is higher than that in the other side is frequently observed, even for fault motions of strike slip type. It is interesting to note that seismicity before the main shock was also asymmetrical, i. e. it was active in the region to the west of the fault plane of the 1987 earthquake. The seismicity in the recent one year also seems to be active in the west region. These features may show that the western block to the fault plane has taken a positive part in the accumulation process of stress in the focal region of the 1987 Chiba-ken Toho-oki earthquake.

単純な比較は困難であるが, 粘性土の地すべり地帯は地震災害が少なく, 粒径のそろった砂質土の急崖は危険性が高い。また, 樹高の大きい植生は地盤破壊を促進する。

要 旨目的 : 地域中規模病院における経皮内視鏡的胃瘻造設術 (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, 以下「PEG」) 施行患者の長期生存率を明らかにする. 対象・方法 : 2004年1月1日∼2006年9月1日の期間にあおもり協立病院にてPEGを施行した患者を対象とし, 過去の診療録を用いて調査した. 累積生存率を生命表分析 (Kaplan-Meier法) にて推定し, その95%信頼区間を算出した. 後ろ向きコホート研究である. 結果 : 対象者332名, 平均年齢77.5±9.5歳 (中央値78歳). 24名は転帰不明であり追跡が可能だった日までを解析に組み入れた (追跡率92.8%).  累積生存率は30日90.3%, 1年61.8%, 2年47.9%, 3年37.6%, 5年21.5%であった. 結論 : 地域中規模病院におけるPEG後の長期生存率は高次機能病院と同程度であったが, 原因疾患は異なる可能性がある.

We report here the clinical presentation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and successful surgical management associated with triceps tendonavulsionin a dog.A definitive diagnosis of triceps tendon avulsion was made based on MRI with evidence ofdisplacement of the triceps tendon. Surgical correction oftriceps tendon avulsion was performed with two horizontal mattress sutures using polyester and two tunnels drilled in the olecranon to reattach the tendon to the proximal olecranon. At 9 months, there was no evidence of lameness on the left thoracic limb. This is the first case report to describe MRI evaluation for the diagnosis of the triceps tendon avulsion.

The hypothesis proposed by Nakamura (1983) that the North-Eastern Japan is a part of the North-American Plate has been re-examined from geological and geomorphological veiw points. One of the difficulties is that active faults are not found along the entire length of the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line which is considered as the boundary between rigid plates. The beginning of the convergence at the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line is much older than the age speculated by SENO (1987). An alternative hypothesis that the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line is a moribund plate boundary is proposed.

Background: To investigate the possible role of sex hormones in the pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), the effect of β-estradiol (E2) on bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, a key signaling pathway involved in PAH, was studied in human pulmonary arterial endothelial cells (HPAEC). Methods and Results: BMP signaling molecules, including BMP receptor, Smad1/5/8 and Id1, were studied in HPAEC under 1% O2 (hypoxia) and 21% O2 (normoxia) as well as the effect of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α expression in the presence of E2 on BMP signaling. The effects of an estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist (ICI 182,780) and cycloheximide, and the interaction of ER with Smad or HIF-1α were also studied. In the presence of E2, BMP signaling was augmented under normoxia but suppressed under hypoxia. HIF-1α accumulation suppressed BMP signaling, whereas HIF-1α inhibition augmented signaling. These effects were cancelled by ICI 182,780. Moreover, binding between ER, HIF-1α and phosphorylated (p)-Smad1/5/8 proteins occurred only under hypoxia. On inhibition of de novo synthesis with cycloheximide, however, p-Smad1/5/8 expression was suppressed only under normoxia. Conclusions: The effects of E2 on BMP signaling in HPAEC altered depending on O2 concentration and different mechanisms may be involved. BMP and sex hormones may play an important role in PAH development.

A novel recognition element has been synthesized using glycopolymer-modified gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in sugar ratios of 0, 6, 12, and 50%. The as-synthesized glycopolymer-modified GNPs have been employed in a novel lateral flow assay for the detection of proteins. A test solution of concanavalin A (ConA) at 0.01–100 µg mL−1 was readily detectable with the glycopolymer-modified GNPs with a sugar ratio of 6%. The results were clear enough to be visible with the naked eye, which demonstrates the convenience of this lateral flow assay for performing the detection of Shiga toxins and influenza viruses. Therefore, this lateral flow assay provides an attractive biosensor for the detection of proteins without the handling of toxic reagents, while allowing an easy and rapid procedure.
