Depression and chronic autoimmune thyroiditis are common diseases. The aim of this study was to determine whether the frequency of depression is elevated in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and normal thyroid function. A total of 201 subjects were included, of whom 107 and 94 participants were healthy or had euthyroid chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, respectively. Serum thyroid hormone levels and thyroid auto-antibodies were measured in all subjects. All participants were evaluated with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). HDRS scores of patients with euthyroid chronic autoimmune thyroiditis were higher than in healthy participants. This study suggests a possible association between depression and chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. The depression risk may be increased in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and normal thyroid function.

Progressive crushing tests of unidirectionally laminated carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) rectangular plate were carried out to reveal its continuous fracture behavior and energy absorption. A special test fixture was developed for the test and fracture process of the CFRP was observed from its side section. Three types of trigger geometries, i.e. chamfer, steeple and V-shape trigger, were machined on each specimen. Film embedded V-shape trigger was also prepared to investigate the effect of initial cracks on energy absorption. The initial fracture behavior strongly affected the ensuing stable fracture process. It was clarified that V-shape trigger specimen was robust over the variation of gage length (unsupported length) as compared to chamfer and steeple trigger specimen which showed smaller energy absorption with longer gage length. A column-like part, which was called pillar in this paper, was observed between fronds under crushing. The fracture was much severe at pillar section than fronds section. Fiber fractures were observed periodically at 50-100 μm length in the pillar section, which coincides with the length of kink band in ultimate compressive failures of CFRP. It was revealed that the thickness of pillar was dominant factor on energy absorption of unidirectional CFRP.

昨今の生命科学の進歩は薬理学の研究をより病態に応じた新薬の開発へと向かわせている.しかし,肝不全,腎不全,多臓器不全など,急性臓器不全は高い死亡率を示すにもかかわらず,その治療において決め手となる薬物は未だ開発されていない.これら急性臓器不全の組織障害の病態生理は完全に明らかでないが,好中球の活性化や虚血・再潅流にともなう酸化ストレスによる細胞傷害が大きな役割を果たしている.酸化ストレスはヘムタンパク質からヘムを遊離させる.遊離ヘムは脂溶性の鉄であることから,活性酸素生成を促進して細胞傷害を悪化させる.この侵襲に対抗するために,ヘム分解の律速酵素:Heme Oxygenase-1(HO-1)が細胞内に誘導される.HO-1によるヘム分解反応産物である一酸化炭素,胆汁色素には,抗炎症・抗酸化作用がある.したがって,遊離ヘム介在性酸化ストレスよって誘導されたHO-1は酸化促進剤である遊離ヘムを除去するのみならず,これらの代謝産物の作用を介して細胞保護的に機能する.一方,HO-1の発現抑制やHO活性の阻害は酸化ストレスによる組織障害を悪化させる.この,HO-1の細胞保護作用に着目して,HO-1誘導を酸化ストレスによる組織障害の治療に応用する試みがなされている.本稿では,急性臓器不全モデルにおいて障害臓器に誘導されたHO-1が,遊離ヘム介在性酸化ストレスから組織を保護するのに必須の役割を果たしていることを述べる.また,抗炎症性サイトカイン:インターロイキン11,塩化スズ,グルタミンがそれぞれ,肝臓,腎臓,下部腸管特異的にHO-1を誘導し,これら組織特異的に誘導されたHO-1が標的臓器の保護・回復に重要な役割を果たしていることを示す.HO-1誘導剤の開発は急性臓器不全の新しい治療薬となる可能性を秘めている.

Measurements have been made of potassium, rubidium and cesium in the human soft tissues, muscles and bones from autopsies to determine the normal concentrations of these elements and to estimate the total body amount. The individual variability of concentration increases in the following order : K Rb Cs and the distribution pattern of potassium in muscle suggests a normal distribution and the observed distribution of stable cesium and the Cs/K ratio in muscle appear to be lognormal. A fairly good agreement is observed in rubidium data with those reported by other workers, however, discrepancy in cesium data is observed between the author and other workers. The amount of potassium, rubidium and cesium in the total body estimated from the concentrations of these elements in the soft tissues, muscle and bone is, respectively, 136±28 grams, 0.36±0.09 grams and 1.4 × 10-3 grams (95% probable range : 0.50—4.1 × 10-3) for the standard man of 70 kg body weight.

Background: Abnormalities in autonomic control are a feature of neuroendocrine activation in HF and are responsible for dysregulation of biological rhythms. The purpose was to investigate the presence and the prognostic significance of long-period heart rate (HR) rhythms in heart failure (HF) patients. Methods and Results: In the study, 92 HF patients were enrolled (age 53±14 years and left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF] 37±10%). A rhythmometric analysis was used to assess the HR rhythms in 7-days (7D) Holter recordings. Rhythms properties were quantified by mesor and amplitude, in beats/min and by acrophase, in hours. Cardiac death or HF decompensation were registered. All patients had 24-h rhythm, 61 patients (77%) had 8-h rhythm, and 66 patients (83%) had 7D rhythm. Twelve patients (15%) experienced events. Among rhythm parameters only 7D median amplitude was different between patients with or without events: 1.1beats/min [0.5–1.5] vs. 2.0beats/min [0.0–3.9], P=0.049 respectively. After multivariate adjustment, LVEF (per 1%, hazard ratio 0.92, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.87 to 0.98, P=0.01), N-terminal portion of pro-natriuretic hormone type B (per 100pg/ml, hazard ratio 1.036, 95% CI 1.005–1.069, P=0.022), and 7D amplitude of the HR ≤1.71beats/min (hazard ratio 5.4, 95% CI 1.2–34.4, P=0.047) were independent predictors of events. Conclusions: A 7D HR rhythm is present in most patients with HF, and has prognostic significance.

天然アユおよびオイカワに体表の潰瘍形成を主徴とする病気が発生し, 病魚の体表患部および腎臓から2種類の滑走細菌が改変 Cytophaga 培地で分離された. 生化学的性状などから1種は, Cytophaga psychrophila と同定され, もう1種も Cytophaga 属に分類されたが種名は決定できなかった. 両種は血清学的にも区別可能であった. 両種の代表株はアユおよびオイカワに対して病原性を示した. Cytophaga sp. は分離頻度が低かったことなどから, C.psychrophila が今回の流行病の主要な原因菌と考えられた.

最新脳科学の研究成果に注目して, 脳の健康という視点で「調理の効用」を研究するために, 無侵襲・低拘束性の近赤外線計測装置により調理中の脳活動を計測した。  計測に使用した近赤外線計測装置は, 頭皮から20ミリほどの深さにある大脳皮質の活性状態を近赤外線の照射によって計測する装置である。本実験の脳の測定部位は, 大脳の前頭連合野で, 運動・感覚・認知・言語・思考など高次脳機能に関連する。  実験方法は, 成人女性15名に対して, 夕食の献立を考える, 野菜を切る, ガスコンロを使って炒める, 皿に盛り付けるという作業を課し, 各調理の手順における脳活動の計測を行った。  計測の結果, 夕食の献立を考える, 野菜を切る, ガスコンロを使って炒める, 皿に盛り付けるという調理の各手順で, 左右の大脳半球の前頭連合野の活性化が確認された。  音読や計算による脳の活性化の確認やそれらを組み合わせた学習療法による実践的研究や本実験結果から「調理を行うこと」によって前頭連合野を鍛えることができると考えられ, 前頭連合野の働きである他者とのコミュニケーションや身辺自立, 創造力など社会生活に必要な能力の向上が期待されることが示唆された。

In order to investigate the effect of a hall response on music players, we have made various experimental studies up to now. In order to develop this research, one of the most important subjects is to understand the musicians’ perception of the acoustic effects of halls. Musicians generally perceive the acoustic properties of a concert hall by keeping their performing action and by adjusting their playing technique subconsciously. This kind of interactive relationship between musicians and acoustic environment is really important when considering the acoustic values of concert halls for musicians. In this study, musicians’ awareness of concert halls was investigated through interview survey and the cognitive psychological phenomena of musicians were interpreted by applying the “tacit knowing” theory. Then the process to extract the musicians’ perception in experimental studies on concert hall acoustics is discussed.

The report “Healthy Japan 21” sets out Japanese public health targets for the year 2010. Under the item of “Nourishment/eating habits”, detailed numerical values are given for the whole human lifespan. For adult women, in particular, the pregnancy period is important, as poor nourishment and bad habits can sow the seeds of lifestyle-related disease. It is important to lay the foundations for healthy eating habits and dietary education activity early on. Now, the Dietary Education Law, enforced in 2005, has provided backing for such activity, and dietary education activities specific to each region are being developed. By teaching children the value of home cooking, it is important to nip lifestyle-related disease in the bud.

We describe a patient in whom a fish bone penetrated the duodenum and migrated into the right renal vein. The bone was successfully removed with surgery. The 75-year-old man was admitted to Nippon Medical School Tama Nagayama Hospital because of right upper abdominal pain persisting for 7 days. The patient's medical history was not relevant to the current disorder. Plain radiography showed no abnormalities. Computed tomography revealed a linear object of high intensity that had penetrated the duodenum and migrated into the right renal vein with thrombus. The object was surrounded by a low-density area, suggesting severe inflammation. The patient had eaten fish 1 day before the onset of abdominal pain. We diagnosed duodenal penetration caused by an ingested fish bone. Endoscopic examination showed erosion, but no fish bone or ulceration was detected in the duodenum. The patient was treated conservatively with fasting, peripheral parental nutrition, and intravenous antibiotics. Three days after admission, non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed no movement of the foreign body. The patient continued to have pain, and the decision was made to surgically explore the abdomen. Intraoperative ultrasonography showed that the foreign body had migrated completely into the right renal vein with thrombus. Severe inflammation of the right renal vein was observed. Because we could not remove the foreign body without seriously injuring the right renal vein, right nephrectomy was performed. Macroscopic examination of the surgical specimen confirmed the presence of a fish bone with thrombus in the right renal vein. The patient was discharged 9 days after operation, with no complications.

Nesting in shipbuilding is work that complicated parts of various sizes are arranged in steel plate as many as possible. The work has been done by experts. We have developed the automatic nesting system by use of Genetic Algorithm (GA) and new algorithm which are introduced from heuristic rules which the experts have. We call the algorithm “geometrical simplification of parts”, “pairing algorithm” and “grouping algorithm”. This paper describes that the combination with GA and new algorithm which we propose is effective to the processing speed of the system and the scrap ratio of nesting and that the system is available for practical use.
